Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Okay, so Paramore were sitting in the Fueled by Ramen corporate offices looking at different ways to make their latest record generate the most profit. After reviewing many possibilities, they developed Riot!. Here is an excerpt of their discussions:

“So guys, you know this record is going to sell no matter how bad it is, right?”

“Oh definitely. I mean, we could just fill this record with tons of boring, boring ballads… Our predominantly female fanbase will eat it up.”

“Yeah, sure, but that would be boring, and we’ll actually have to PLAY that nonsense if we do that.”

“True, but you know people are expecting that, right?”

“Well, personally, I think we should totally release a pure pop-punk record; that is what’s big right now, and really, we’re on Fueled by Ramen, and they’re pretty much in charge as far as pop-punk goes right now. Maybe toy around with some kind of weird outside influence like Panic! At the Disco or Cobra Starship. Kids love that kind of thing.”

“That's quite true... I got it! Let’s throw some random mariachi in. Surprising, yet totally embraceable. Cool, huh?”

“Damn, that’s slick. But we have to make sure at least half of our record is ballads. I mean, we really would be missing a great chance to totally exploit our fan’s taste otherwise.”

“Oh, okay. But is Hailey really down with being Seventeen Magazine fodder?”

“What’s the difference between 'punk' webzines posting her birthday and Teen People doing the same?”

“Yeah, really, you see the way those guys come on to her every night at Warped Tour?”

“Totally. Which reminds me, our lead single should totally play with that a little. We need it to play on male fantasy.”

“Damn right.”

“So the plan is, stupid 'experimental' moments, lots of pop-punk, lots of lame balladry, and…probably a lot of wailing on Hailey’s part, because really, this band IS her, right?”

“Yeah, you guys can probably just take the back seat on this one. Do you guys even really matter, anyway?”

"No."

[awkward moment of silence]

"Ohhh! We could inject a sense of faux-rebellion into the record, too! Kids always love that."

“Alright, now all we have to do is get down to business, and record this record. Man, we’re going to be so rich. TRL here we come!”

I love how all the people who disagree with the review put their review forward so well with an excellent grasp of English and a well developed argument.

But seriously - to the people bitching about the review - if you're going to whine, at least make sense.. I couldn't understand what the hell half of these fashioncore kids are trying to say - not that they mispelled words, it just doesn't make sense..

Posted by Justlikeacat on 2007-12-24 12:57:43

Ha! Love you review. Totally true. I hate how everyone loves them. I really dont see why. They sound like everything else... O whoops, I thought I was commenting on Fall Out Boy.. or was it Panic? O, its a girl singing.. I get it!

The album was overall poor in my opinion.Their first release held water, and as probably one of few out of this orgy of doom that enjoyed Paramore's first album and saw them live supporting it, they did well, and the band was nice overall.

I feel like the new one has drifted more towards selling, but if you payed any attention you'd know Paramore signed a major "360" deal, which basically gives the label rights over marketing and music and all sorts of things. The new album isn't as well written, the songs feel empty to me, and honestly I feel the band performed better on a small stage with 20 kids than with the 1000 I saw at last Warped.

That being said they hardly deserve the crap this board is bringing, and the review if well intended kinda fell flat.

If I wanted to do such, I wouldn't have written positive reviews for Anberlin, Silverstein, or Young Love, really. Instead, I'd have written a review on the Chuck Ragan Blueprints, or something.

"There's more out there than just orgcore guys. Ugh."

Yes. There is. But I don't like your assumption that the only reason people would dislike this is that they've pigeonholed their tastes to "org-core", and that, should they open up to new things, they would, of course, like this steaming pile.

There's a lot more out there. There's great alt-country, like Whiskeytown. Great electronic stuff like The Faint and The Postal Service. Classic rock, like The Who. Pop, like The Lemonheads. I could go on. Just because people don't like this band, doesn't mean they're not open-minded. Correlation does not equal causation. Some of them actually have taste.

Come on punknews...maintain at least some sort of credibility. I'm not trying to stick up for Paramore - I don't like their music and probably will never listen to an album of theirs straight through - but they deserve a semi-serious review from a less biased reviewer. I understand that it's really cool to bash and hate bands that everyone else hates, but this is the best review you guys can put up there?

I don't read Pitchfork. Even when I want to, the site is so shitty it won't load half the time.

Even so, this is a pretty classic review style, I've seen similar reviews in more than just music mediums. It wasn't a really original concept, to be honest, but it wasn't intended to be. It's how I felt about this record., and how I felt I should express such feelings regarding this record. I'm not trying to impress, who do I have to impress here?

This band is a lame christian pop group, on a formerly independent record label now owned by Warner Brothers, there is nothing remotely "punk" about Paramore, their "fans", or any of the morons who eat this shit up along side Ashlee Simpson or 50 Cent! If you can find a way to validate this band you should go to the nearest mall and practice self-immolation.

This is the worst review I've ever read on this site, and that's saying ALOT.

I'm not Paramore's biggest fan but a lot of your claims are totally unfounded. Did it occur to the reviewer that maybe they wanted to craft a poppy album because that's the music they want to make? I'm pretty sure if they wanted to totally sell-out to the labels they would've written a way poppier and accessible record than what they put out with Riot.

With all that said, this is definitely an album that's not in my tastes. I do like poppier bands like Piebald and the sort, but I'm just not a fan of some of the newer bands. I admire what they try to do with taking a sound and trying to make it theirs, but this record wasn't the one to do that.

You shouldn't even bother to review anything anymore or even try to justify this abomination of a review that you spewed on to our computer screens.

Posted by CapnHawk on 2007-07-22 05:23:29

I'm not a fan of this band, but this review is really fucking badly written.

The only point I can agree with is that the chick will forever overshadow the rest of the band in recognition, everyone will be like "there goes that chick from paramore, i'd totally smash her box in" and the rest of the band probably wouldn't even get recognised enough to have their noodles slurped by underage sluts in the tour bus.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at 8:02 PM (EDT)

The review wasn't very well articulated but I believe made a valid point of the state that labels such as FUELED BY RAMEN and others which started with an indie/punk aesthetic and philosophy were swayed by dollar signs and the concept of releasing interesting art took back seat to pop-culture and maximizing profits. But let it be realized that FBR is not alone. There is a multitude of labels from TOOTH AND NAIL, VICTORY, etc... that have decided to ride down the wave of dollar signs and easy sells. Now, put yourself in their shoes, MAYBE you would do it too? Who is to say. But it is an interesting turn of events nevertheless and eventually a shift needs to occur where one is to question the motives of the marketers and try and cut through the noise to find the true inspired "art". Which then again, I can question myself and say "what is art? doesn't placing a word like VALID on art create elitism"? It does... but in the end one needs to just refocus and reclaim what PUNK is... it is not a genre of music, but more of an ethic and way of life... a refusal of accepting overly marketed things and focusing on community and a true economic model that does not need to depend on any multi-national affiliation. PUNK started as a genre but then quickly became two things - an ethics-related movement with many sub-movements.. and a word for marketing rebellion. Pick you side and follow with pride. - Demosthenes

    My Score:

I realized that the song I liked wasn't a Paramore song at all. It was a Lydia song.

Still though, the girl is hot. So tens all around!

    My Score:

"Hallelujah," "Born For This" and "Misery Business" are all great pop songs. The rest is pretty forgettable, though.

I'm pretty embarrassed that a place as respected as Punknews would run a review this blatantly biased and hateful, though. Is professionalism too much to ask?

... and infact, this disc would probably get two more stars if it said KELLY CLARKSON on the front. not that i think hailey is as good of a singer.

Posted by coldwaffles on 2007-07-20 21:44:35

and this wasn't done with humor in mind, rather, it was the best way to express how i felt.

    "The reviewer is a douche

if this bands name was Tsunami Bomb,,it would have gotten 5 stars....grow up old punker"

no, because it would still be a fake vocal pop cd disguised as "postindiepunkpoprockcorewhatevertheywanttolabelitnowadays".

    What a terrible review.

    My Score:

On one of the songs they throw in a subtle little Refused rip off (although im sure they'd call it a tribute) from the Shape of punk to come...lame.

I would give this a one, but they get an extra star because i would totally let the singer slurp my noodle.

    Posted by holy_balls on 2007-07-20 19:46:31

Wow, this review was stupid. It wasn't funny at all. If you thought it was funny, you must be slow-witted. Fucking idiot.

I was surprised when I read this entire review only to find it contained no humor.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 20, 2007 at 7:13 PM (EDT)

Reviews on this site are bogus. Either they're fanboy gushing or its crap like this where the person "reviewing" the CD obviously hates the band or genre to begin with and is just venting.

True. You forgot about fanboys being dissapointed in a release and scoring it a 4.

Posted by Amazingthemike on 2007-07-20 18:45:44

I don't like this band, but this review was crap.

    hah that was great review.
    this band is 100% bullshit.

No one would care about these hacks if this girl didn't put out on a regular basis.

Posted by herewegoagainxx on 2007-07-20 16:37:31

that's the biggest piece of crap and lies i've ever read. i met paramore and they were nice geniune people...this review makes them look like idiot teenagers who don't put passion into their music...and if you really did research on the song meanings and backgrounds you'd realize they're the complete opposite of what this piece portrays them as.

journalism is obviously a dying art, because anyone with talent would know not to print information so false as this.

"surprised they arent on a major."

I think that they actually are on a major; it just doesn't say it on the side of the case. Look at the trademark/duder on the back of the case with all of the small font and I think it says Atlantic.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 20, 2007 at 2:17 PM (EDT)

    My Score:

This is just about the most ignorant review of an album I've read this year.

This is the record the BAND wanted to make - heck yes, they'd like to be successful, but they didn't compromise their music one bit to get there. They made exactly the record they wanted to make and they fought and worked like hell to make it...so whether you like it or not, it's as far as you can get from a corporate manufacturered album.

Of course, I don't know why I would expect the reviewer to know that, since they can't even spell Hayley's name correctly.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 20, 2007 at 1:37 PM (EDT)

Review is probably too harsh. These kids may not be your thing, but they're pretty earnest and Hayley is adorable.

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 20, 2007 at 1:32 PM (EDT)

Score is for the review/reviewer. It's remarkable how he criticizes Fueled By Ramen and Paramore for the opportunity to sell records and reap long-term profits. Your review could pertain to any band wishing to establish a career predominantly because eventually, one objective for artists is to bring more awareness to their brand (or in this case, band). Moreover, have you considered that Paramore possibly desires to play and takes pleasure in the music they are recording and releasing? Close-minded douchebag...

Oh, and you write like shit. Take a course in journalism.

Wow. This album is a step up from the last one, and the songs rule. The band is tight as hell live. Bashing a band like Paramore to look cool is like kicking a puppy to look hard.
