Allow me to be blunt: Municipal Waste has destroyed an entire generation of metal bands. Okay, maybe that’s an overstatement, but the fact is that, much like the Highlander, there can only be one jokey, pop-culture obsessed, drunken 1980s-revival crossover thrash band, and that is Muni Waste. The world does not need throngs of denim-clad young men pretending that it is 1987. Joliet, IL’s Infinite Missiles do not seem to understand this, and have decided to create a demo CD to show the world just how brainless and immature they can be.

The demo, Rage Till We Die 2007, is musically pretty competent. Infinite Missiles covers a standard thrash sound, but leans toward a speedier hardcore sound over the galloping rhythms of speed metal. The drums are generally spot-on, with drummer Eddie Cantu providing a steady background without getting too reliant on either blast-beats or double bass. Wanky, tapped guitar solos bring the over-the-top quality of heavy metal to the band’s generally hardcore-style riffs. The band keeps their sound grounded in hardcore with nasally shouted vocals and gang choruses, which create a dynamic surprisingly similar to that of classic bands like Boston’s Slapshot or NYC’s Cro-Mags.

Infinite Missiles fails miserably, however, in their Waste-worshipping “humorous” lyrics. Disc opener “Order 66” is a reference to Revenge of the Sith, and even I, an avowed Star Wars fan (my dog is named Chewbacca, for fuck’s sake!) hated that movie. Of course there’s a theme song, “Infinite Missiles,” which, from what I can gather, is about video games. “Ooo, Freddy’s Nails” tackles the truly pressing issue of being attacked by Freddy Krueger (see what I mean about pretending that it’s 1987?); “Dude Soup” brings new insight to the growing problem of parties with too many dudes (defined as the “Sausagefest Conundrum,” after sociologist Dr. Earl Sausagefest); and “Unleash the Fury” seems to have something to do with either kicking ass or being metal -- or both. The demo is finished off with a cover of Slayer’s “The Antichrist,” presumably because “Raining Blood” would’ve been “too fuckin’ obvious, bro!”

Ultimately, Infinite Missiles is an acceptable diversion, but neither a truly interesting nor a truly original one. If you need something to jam on the cassette deck in your rusted orange Gremlin while waiting for your Gorditos with extra “queso,” Rage Till We Die might be worth getting. Otherwise, just listen to the ‘Waste, bro.

    generally when you compare a hardcore band to Hatebreed, it means that they are going to sound chunkier than the kid at the pool who swims with a shirt on.

    By the way, I got a compilation in the mail that had a few old Hatebreed songs on it...as bad as new Hatebreed is, it wipes the floor with old Hatebreed, which is terrible.

    Nice job, first time poster. I didn't compare the band overall to Slapshot or Cro-Mags, I just think that the singer's voice is contorted a la John Joseph or Choke. I'm writing the damned review here: it's MY opinion. OPINION. MINE. Deal with it... bro. Also, I'm gonna guess that you're either in the band or know the band, so... BIAS! Man, I am a defensive ass when it comes to my reviews.

    Whoever wrote this is obviously a tool. First and foremost Episode III was a good movie, almost up there with the original trilogy, just because you named your dog Chewbacca doesnt make you king of The Lucas universe. Also from someone that claims to be into 80's sXe hardcore, you must not really know too much about it to say these guys sound like Slapshot and Cro-Mags. To use Municipal Waste so many times in this review was stupid unless the bands a straight rip, itd be like sying every hardcore band is aripoff of Hatebreed even though there were tons of bands before Hatebreed.

    I also forgot this is the site that whenever theres a post about Municipal Waste everyne cries their "15 minutes" isnt up, if either of these bands were straight against me ripoffs you jerkoffs would have been all over it and saying it was original and the next big thing. IM sounds more like punk and hardcore than thrash anyway. Lastly your song by song analysis was stupid, especially for someone that loves anarcho punk.... some of the most bonehead redundant shit out there. Im not saying this band is the best thing since Ive ever heard but its better than most of the bands that play that style of music.

    Ianw...drunk? I like thrash, it just has to either be serious, or at least done right. 625 etc have some really good releases, but also a lot of "random band that sounds waaaaaay too much like [DRI, or Infest, or whatever]." So there.

    Oh, and I wasn't going to say that What Happens Next? ruined a generation of metal bands. Municipal Waste seems to be the most prominent of the thrash revival bands, so I'm giving them the credit.

    There were literally a hundred bands playing jokey 80's crossover before Municipal Waste started. They didn't invent the genre nor have they defined.

    completely agree. way too many bands are trying to do this bonehead party-thrash and it's gonna get ridiculous. good review.
