| Hot Water Music / Thursday / Paint It Blacklive in New York2008 live show Review by: Brian See others by this writer Hot Water Music (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on July 15th 2008
When one of the best bills I've seen in a while was announced, I wasn't planning on missing it, regardless of the towering venue size Terminal 5 encompasses. Hot Water Music was set to co-headline with Thursday and openers Paint It Black, making for a show where having to sit through mediocre acts was not a worry at all -- plus, after all, I'd get to see another of HWM's sporadic reunion sets. Even if I was missing out on Circle Jerks / Dillinger Four and Alkaline Trio / Bayside / American Steel (both taking place in the same borough that night!), I still believe I made the best choice.
However, the highlight (for some, at least) may have been the new song played. "In Silence" (someone else noted it was actually "In Solace"; not quite sure who's right) came from the band's upcoming split LP with Envy, and was actually a budding, well-done instrumental song that built quickly to an effective climax, á la Mogwai / Explosions in the Sky. It sure makes sense for the LP, considering the last full-length from Envy. Set list (8:19-9:20):
And hey, the set list wasn't half-bad. They played just about all their "singles," inspiring shout-alongs from everyone. Ragan and Wollard sounded great playing off each other, and the middle of the set found the band simply rolling through without hesitation. They played the songs tightly (from the incredible "Trusty Chords" to the bass plucks of "Moonpies for Misfits") and seemed to have a good time themselves, as they've attested in multiple interviews and as they did on stage that night. Set list (mostly accurate) (9:45-10:47):

http://intunemusic.wordpress.com/2008/08/07/hot-water-music-thur sday-paint-it-black-nyc-712/ Paint It Black ruled but the crowd/atmosphere was much better in Brooklyn. HWM was amazing as usual.....THEY PLAYED TURNSTILE. In Philly, HWM played "God Deciding"; which automatically made it the better show of the weekend. Beaver Boys is the best thing in this entire review. b-b-b-beaver boys. b-beaver boys. Score is for the guy below me's Tim and Eric reference. when I talked to Dan Yemin he seemed like a really nice, down to earth guy. complaining about a barrier doesn't really justify him being called a jerkoff. Go fuck yourself red eye, Yemin is not a jerkoff. i did dillinger four/circle jerks then cabbed it up there to make HWM in their second song. check my blog in like two days for pictures, review, and video of both shows. hot water music/thursday/paint it black Thursday Jet Black New year=Stuck with a boner for a week I CANNOT fucking beleive Thursday played Tomorrow I'll Be You. FUCK. I wish I wasnt so poor right now, I just couldnt do it. As long as you go into great detail about the Monotonix's set yours would probably be better Did you go to Circle Jerks / D4 / PIB the day after in Brooklyn? If not I'd review it. the other two question marks are "swinger" and "old rules," but i'm not sure on the order. Mad good show. I'd have to say, I enjoyed Paint It Black's short set the most. Thursday's new song was awesome. Makes me excited for their new split. If I were to come up with a list of things to call Dan Yemin, I don't think "Jerk-Off" would be one of them. Dan Yemin's kind of a jerk-off. Why was he complaining about the barrier? He knew the size of the venue when they signed on to play this huge show. Nobody put a gun to their heads. You don't like the environment, don't play the show. Go play your own show in a basement or bar somewhere. Brian: Wow, that's a lot of "War All the Time" from Thursday. I thought that I would be seeing them play a lot more newer material. They release music kind of slowly, I noticed. Agree with the missing Free Radio Gainesville and Manual. "i think Free Radio Gainseville was the 2nd song, and Manual was the last song before encore." i think Free Radio Gainseville was the 2nd song, and Manual was the last song before encore. What HWM has been putting together this past year has been amazing. Every show is stacked with great bands. I can't wait for their show here with Strike Anywhere and Dead to Me. At least one of those question marks is Free Radio Gainesville. This show was awesome. But the F-Yeah tour in Brooklyn, was an event beyond my comprehension. I was there and nothing made sense...nothing. I'm debating whether to go see HWM for like 40 bones at this brofest type thing here in Toronto, that setlist is alright so I'm still on the fence. 'It's Hard to Know' and 'The Sense' are such jams. Bayside weren't at the Alk3 show. it was the Fashion, Am Steel and the Trio. that was a pretty good show too. The Brooklyn Fuck Yeah Fest was weird and pretty awesome. Great show, I would have killed my brother for making me miss Paint it Black but they played the next night at Fuck Yeah Fest, so he lives. |
