This album is unarguably one of the finest of the year. It has all the elements of raging hardcore(a mixture of screaming and driving guitars) and about as much melody as is possible to get in a song. Every song on this album is great, no doubt. The music is catchy as hell and the lyrics give Greg Graffin of Bad Religion or Russ Rankin from Good Riddance a run for their money.( As if they care about it anyway) Now to the songs. The album starts off with "kill me quickly." Rising guitars and bursts into a hardcore riff then directly into a heavy dose of melody. This exchange permeates the entire song. More punk rock bands should write songs with this much energy and emotion. One of the best opening tracks on an album ever. It starts off the album like "Wouldn't it be Nice?" off the Pennywise self-titled record. The second song, "a subtle dagger" follows the opening track in step in terms of the opening hardcore riff and then the melody. These songs are very similar, bouncing off each other and creating an enticing introduction to the album. "See you in the shallows" is a song about an aspect of life coming to an end, whatever it may be. This may be the softer side of Thrice. "Bertrayal is a symptom" reminds of The Refused with the pounding drums and guitars feeding off each other. Then, our of nowhere, here comes the burst of melody, then the hardcore back and forth. They pull off it were cutting precision. This characteristic sets Thrice apart from a lot of bands that seem to have one continous sound, but Thrice obviously does not which makes them so good. I have chosen not to talk about the rest of the songs for the mere fact that the album grows and builds and gets better with every song. This album has all the elements of being a great punk rock record - the vocals, the lyrics, and the music. Their creative mix of punk rock, hardcore, pop melodies, and amazing musicianship makes the best record of the year. And check out the piano if you get a chance.

cant get any better than this Ah if only they now then what we know now. this is a good cd not as good as the other two but a good cd, thrice is a good band deadbolt, betrayal is a symptom, see you in the shallows "and their unreleased song on "Hopelessly Devoted To You 4" is kick-ass." Whoever says thrice is uninteresting is an idiot. They are one of the most interesting bands out there. Though the suicide machines do beat them out. and strung out. people who dont recognize the talents of thrice are kind of retarded anyway for those who doesnt think like me ---- ------ ------- cause ur momma ---- ----- This band is SO FUCKING OVERRATED!!! Don' get me wrong, I like the band, I give this release a 7, it's better than alot of other releases in 2002... but 2002 sucked for releases. They're awesome live, which is were i first heard them, but there's WAY too much hype over these guys. one of the best records in 2002! Nothing Special here. thrice took a huge step forward with this album, considering their last album was uninspired, repetitive, annoying garbage. while i don't understand all the praise this band has been getting from critics and fans alike, it does contain some memorable moments .. the only sad thing is that all the good songs are at the beginning and the album sinks right after them. oh well. Good review, but a comparison to Graffin is perhaps a bit TOO extreme. i just saw them live last week with hot rod circuit and just let me saw that they blew me away. EVERY song was incredible and their stage presence was amazing. thrice is the real deal. Yeah there is definitely good metal influence on this album... I can't decide which is better, Identity Crisis or Illusion of Safety. They're both really good in my opinion, but this is definitely one cd that everyone should buy if they're into melodic hardcore. dude he is comparing them to the melody of the songs, and it is damn good, damn good record, just not as good as their first. hands down one of the best records of the year. "to awake and avenge the dead" is freaking incredible. yeah good riddance and bad religion suck comparing to russ rankins from good riddance?! yeah right.... Dude, Thrice is good but a comparison to Greg Graffin's lyrics? Slow down, junior. yeah, i think they might pride themselves more on metal than hardcore. I've said this before, but how hard would it be to get some editing on this site? Not only do we have a superior review already done of this record, thanks to Scott, but this is frankly not very well written. Using words that aren't real words (unarguably) makes reviews hard to read. Good cd, but you forgot to mention metal. |
