Fake Problems and Ninja Gun have just one song apiece here on this split 7", but they stack up impressively.

FP's "The Manliest of All Men" has what's got to be vocalist/guitarist Chris Farren's most intense, searing vocal delivery to date, only strengthening the dirgy, moderate-to-up-tempo blues pacing of the cut. But it's got a decidedly lighthearted feel despite Farren's seething snarl, practically growling his seemingly sardonic lines.

"Man, it's such a bummer," a lyric in NG's "Time and a Half," is a good way to sum up the song -- but not because it sucks, because it most certainly doesn't. It's just that it's got this shoulder-shruggingly defeatist nature about it, the central character pushing forward even though things seem kinds crappy. I wasn't too into NG's full-length, last year's Restless Rubes, but "Time and a Half" resonates with me well as a lightly punky, alt-country indie rocker that reminds me of the brighter moments from Limbeck's Hi, Everything’s Great.

All in all, a clear 7" wrapped in a silk-screened cover that, albeit in need of a lyric sheet, comes on the brink of greatness, and it's probably a good pickup for even fairweather fans.

Fake Problems songs was ridiculous. If they included that on It's Great To Be Alive!, that would actually bring the rating of the entire album down.
Ninja Gun is boring, and continues that with this song.

    I want by $6 back.

Also, suburbanhome, don't tell me to listen to anyone, or buy anything.

brian, you need to give Ninja Gun's Restless Rubes a few more listens, it's a grower. Thanks for reviewing the split. I love the record especially "Time and a Half" one of NG's standout newer songs.

i have the same problem "preston," but i think i solved it this past weekend when mike and i stood around the record player and shotgunned beers to the new ramming speed 7"

score is for that, it was awesome

I'm getting too many 2-song 7"s in my collection. I get sick of putting the needle on, sitting down, then getting back up to flip it because it's a 2-min song. I feel like I have to hover over my turntable.

Two of my current favorite bands. Totally forgot this was coming out. I'm sure I'll like it.

I was honestly a little disappointed with this. The FP track was an outtake for a reason and everyone hyped up the NG track like it was the second coming of "Red State Blues."

Maybe the disappointment just stems that I waited so long for this and allowed myself to get really hyped about it. Dunno.

Still two fo the best bands out there today.

This slipped my mind, gonna have to track it down. The FP track sounds cool.
