I have never really listened to 98 Mute before, except for a few tracks on the Punk O Rama compilations, so when I got this in the mail I had no real idea what to expect when I put it in my cd player.

Musically this band sounds a lot like Pennywise, which isn’t that much of a surprise considering that they are from Hiroshima Beach, Jason Thirsk’s brother is the drummer, and Fletcher produced and mixed the album. By that the songs are all characterized by driving skate punk, sing along choruses, lots of whoa and ahhs, social conscious lyrics, and a songs about being yourself. Most of the songs have some sort of political or social message to them. “Something In The Water” is about the spread of violence in society and the dissenatiaztionlack of response of the population to it. “While “Where Did It All Go Wrong” is about the fractioning of the punk scene, and how it used to be more united and stronger, and now there are so many factions that it leads to in scene fighting and competition. “Injection” is about drugs and the dangers that they posses. On “Small Minds” the band throws in some variety by using some acoustic guitars, which gives it a unique sound compared to the rest of the album, but I don’t really think it works for them.

The multimedia portion of this disc is kind of cool, it has a band bio, link to their web site, some pictures and a video interview. At the end of the interview there is live footage of the band playing Black Flag’s “No Values,” which was probably my favorite part of this cd. Other cool things about it were the Minor Threat reference in “Same Old Song And Dance.” I thought that this album was a pretty decent So. Cal skate punk, if you’re a fan of Pennywise, H20, or somebody similar you will enjoy this.

    If bands like 98 mute and their (Most often) steakhead fans are representative of teh punk scene, I'd be happy to see it die. Fortunately, most of the people I see at those shows would never go anywhere near the actual punk scene in my town. And please don't go into some rant about elitism and all that bullshit. I'm not meaning it like that. I just don't consider those shows the punk scene. Kids paying 20 bucks to see 1 show every few months, spending the entirety of that one show doing the tough guy posturing thing with their other meathead friends, and then hopping in daddy's car to go home for the night isn't a scene.

    Also, there may be a bunch of other bands that also sound like pennywise, but those bands are also lame... Maybe not as lame as pennywise, but still lame. I kind of humors me that you said that they sound nothing like pennywise, and then followed it up with "Sure, maybe the music sounds the same" 98 mute=nothing new or interesting. Sigh.

    They don't sound anything alike, you're a moron! A total moron, the vocals sound NOTHING like Jim's. And maybe the band's music is similar but so are about half a dozen others. The new album's really great, I think you need to listen to this song- Same Old Song And Dance, it basically somes up what the punk scene has become and how it needs to change or it will die quickly, as if it isn't dead already.

    Whoah dude, you have some serious denial issues to work out. The first time I heard 98 degrees... I mean mute, I though they were pennywise.

    But seriously, these bands don't sound anything alike. Except for the vocals. And the guitars. ANd the drumbeat. Plus the basslines. And the subject matter discussed in their songs. But these bands are nothing alike.

    actually punk and skating came from the same area and people. Many punks skate and vise versa many skaters are into punk music. Many skate parks have shows, skate companies sponser tours, punk bands are featured on skate videos and comps. Before skating became so mainstrem it was a very underground thing that only a few people did, commonly these were punks. Also you dont have to skate in order to enjoy skate punk, its just a style that Pennywise embodies perfectly, fast driving rythms, sing along chourus, semi solcial/political lyrics, plus a connection to skating, which PW has, many videos feature thier songs, and I'm sure some of the members skate.

    For the idiot below, none of those abnds sound alike besides the fact that they're considered "skate punk", I don't know why, skating has NOTHING to do with punk rock. I've been listening to Pennywise since '91 and I can't even stand on a board without falling. Anyway, Pennywise rules and so does 98 mute. The deviates are good but 1208 sounds WAY too much like them, not Pennywise.

    I heard Deviates/Pennywise/98 mute are coming out with a split called "Ha! We fooled you,we're all the same band"..I think it's a concept cd.
