The Paper Chase is to say the least an acquired taste. They play a blend of emo, jazz, hardcore punk, and even a little industrial. For the music they use everything from pianos to a recorded telephone message to constantly keep the mood, which seems to be one of paranoia and despair. The album is a concept album of sorts, centered around relationships and breakup, even though it might be somewhat difficult to discern that seeing as a lot of the lyrics are merely part of the howling, psychotic rants of lead singer, John Congleton. Their influences include Drive Like Jehu and King Crimson and I highly recommend these guys to anyone willing to expand their horizons on what they think is punk.
