After bouncing around at Hopeless for a while and releasing a slew of seven inches, Dillinger 4 has come to rest in the Fat stable. And what a great signing they have turned out to be. Like the recent Larry Arms release, this D4 album really changes the complexion of the Fat roster.
The album kicks off with what I can only guess is a Japanese radio broadcast of the coming robot-human war. From there the midwestern punk rock lifts you up on its back and carries you for 34 minutes of pop-punk glory. Now, don't think pop-punk like Blink or Homegrown. This is more challenging. It's catchy and hook filled, but sometimes you have to clean away some of the grime to find it. When you do, you'll be singing along and this album will be permanently entrenched in your CD player or glued to your turntable.
Like every D4 album, the song titles themselves are almost worth the price of a CD itself. Take "A Floater Left With Pleasure In The Executive Washroom" or "The Father, The Son, And The Homosexual/Single Parent". Apparently they have some kind of tie to the lyrics of the song, but I have no idea what the connection might be.
This release is neither groundbreaking nor a display of technical wizardry. It is a group of well written and well executed punk songs that doesn't really sound like anything else out there. But if you did need some comparison in order to go out there and buy it, try the aforementioned Lawrence Arms. D4 puts a little more energy, fun and variety into their shit, though. Not much else to say, except I have a new favourite release this year and it's Situationist Comedy.

"Like the recent Larry Arms release, this D4 album really changes the complexion of the Fat roster." tralalala. Effortlessly perfect. "I just got this CD tonight and I'm FUCKING PISSSING MY MYSELF. never heard this band but just heard the rock against bush song from them (wheelchair something) and I almost creamed my pants Holy crap. Thank you everyone who opened m eyes. This cd is amazing. It's a breath of fresh air. Dillinger Four is my new favorite band. Yeah this band is my favorite, I've been so blind, thank you jesus and d4 Any person that doesn't love this band must be eradicated. This album is so great, but I will admit that Dillinger Four are an aquired taste. God I fucking love this band, sooo fucking good. And also, the person below me could't be more right, I love ltj as much as D4. To the person below me, D4 is quite possible the best band going right now, next to ltj, so go die you fucker. CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP!!!! This is a great CD from a great band. The one thing that D4 has done that very few bands have done is never put out a bad CD. This is not their best CD, but it is still awesome. Get Midwestern Songs and Vs. God first, just 'cause they are both classics. Also, you don't understand Dillinger 4 until you've seen 'em live, that's really what it's all about. Also, what's with this shitty band calling themselves D4 huh? What a bunch of Ass-Gaskets. D4 always has been, is, and always will be Dillinger 4. And Dillinger is not a pickle, it is a bank robber from the 30's who was betrayed by the Lady in Red outside of a movie theater in Chicago. I think it was Chicago. Man, i was expecting so much from this album. it had been talked up so much that i felt sure i'd like it. i don't. it sucks. it is awful. i can't even listen to it. I just got this CD tonight and I'm FUCKING PISSSING MY MYSELF. Dillenger fucking rocks. Buy this cd and you will listen to it everyday. It's that good. the production is worse than their first album, despite being on fat. it bugs me. good album though. their lyrics and catchyness are their strongest points. the produciotn and music is the lows.good, but not as good as the larry arms. maybe if they finally god dec. production it would be. This is a great record, and absolutely destroys most of the garbage that passes for "punk" these days. Maybe the best test for a good album is whether it makes you feel like you stuck a paper clip in the light socket; this album makes me want to run around my house like a mental patient who forgot to take his medication. Plus they have a good sense of humor and thoughtful lyrics. The song structures are not that original (my primary complaint) but the execution is perfect, and the harmonizing of the two guitar parts is used well. Dillinger Four Rule! This record only proves that. every song better than the last and saving the best for last in New Punk Fashions For the Spring Formal In the words of Consumed: Fuckin ace! The song is !!Noble Stabbings!!! (of course you need the exclamation points) Its an awsesome song, and thats the E-card for the new album that pops up. whats the song that plays in the punkhardcore.com pop up? Isnt dillinger a kind of pickle? ! what are they for pickles? !? !? ! thats like gay ska. the vocals are obviously mixed low on purpose. i kinda like it. you can't hear the the vocals as well but it gives the guitars a blaring, out of control quality. dillinger four is one of my favorite bands, but the thing nobody ever seems to mention in the reviews (with the exception of the allmusic guide) is the fact that the production fucking blows. i haven't heard the new album in its entirety yet, but i heard the mp3 from fatwreck.com, and the vocal mix sounds even worse than "midwestern..." it sounds like they recorded their album in a tin can. i thought for sure that once they signed to fat they would finally hook it up with some decent production values. i just don't get it. they have so much to say, but nobody can hear any of it. and the one guy on this board that said the production sounded good? sup with that? i mean, damn. they're on fat, they have the budget now -- the only logical conclusion at which i can arrive is that they intentionally mix the vocals low, which i think is a HUGE mistake. is shitty production supposed to make you more "punk" or something? fuck some of that. Haha thats funny no its not its gay No, what's really gay is to call yourself "Joe_Momma". No ska is gay i dont think anyone has to comment on the kid below me. Last i checked a type of music didn't have a sexual prefrence. D4 is fucking incredible This is probably the gayest thing ever maybe since ska The songs may not be as instantly catchy as the band's earlier stuff but they are still chockfull of the quality you've come to expect from Dillinger Four. Give it a few more spins if you're not convinced at first. this disc rocks my world. basically loud Snuff-like guitars with NoFX hooks. the first song is incredible, and the rest of the CD is equally as great, it just takes a few listens to fully appreciate it. this is a really good year for music, isn't it? Im here to save punk rock from going to the homosexuals cuz they just want to have sex with it. alright i've given these guys a second chance. i've heard a few D4 songs from some friends and thought they were good but nothing spectacular. so after hearing everyone shit themselves over these guys i went out and bought this disc. i must say i am impressed. a bunch of hooks and melodies buried under a mess of vicious, noisy guitars. this will take a while to digest but i really like it. since when did punk need saving? I just really started finding out about these guys, and I must say, I like what I hear. It is pop punk, very raw pop punk, the kind I like. The person below who said they draw an obvious influence from the current Brit pop punk bands is right, the two bands he cited (Leatherface and Snuff) are both rockin, too. I definitely want to get this album, because I don't have anything by them yet. Dillinger Four kicks ass. This is how a good punk rock records should sound like. Too bad so many "so-called" punk bands are too concerned about what their fans might think.... this is my opinion, but i think in a scene were bands like anti flag, AFI,and Saves the Day are extremley poplular for not really doing anything new, i think it's a little unfair to call D4 of all other bands overratted, but thats just me. Not that D4 is incredibly Unique, but no one else REALLY sounds like them, and there lyrics are incredible, but again, thats just my opinion, ok, thats all. BAH D4 is an awesome band but come on guys, they aren't going to "save punk". good but overrated. I hope Dillinger Four "sells out" so that people can stop saying they're gonna save punk. This is alright, but come on. It's definitely not the life changing record you guys are building it up to be. while i don't particularly like this band, i can see why people are saying that they are going to save punk. they have some real talent. evildeadalive: I think it officially has been released here... But I'd be damned if I could find it. Oh well... Fat Wreck has pretty fast mailorder and even with the exchange its cheaper then a mall-store. this is the only dillinger four full length i have...it's great...i love their throughty, dry vocals mixed with their other big burly guy deep warm air from your stomache ones...i also have just about every compilation they've been on and they all rock...i'm so glad their on fat wreck now... Has this been released in Canada yet? I went to two different places today, and neither oof them had it. D4 is here to save punk. All these pseudo-gutterpunk bands, whiny emo bands, corporate pop-punk bands and so on don't have a fucking clue. Incredible, every full length, comp song and 7 inch they've ever put out is incredible, and this is no diffrent. Not to mention they put on the best show i've ever seen. Best punk band going right now in my mind. I like Vs God just from habit of listening to it so I think this is a step down, but I'm waiting on it since Ive only heard mp3s and I think their sound is dense enough that the CD quality will actually be noticeable. Who decided Midwestern Songs was their best effort, I for one thought Vs. God blew it out of the fucking water with superior melodies and song structures. This release is pretty good too, but I have to listen to it more to fully make my opinion on it. This shit is killer-oldpunker- From what I've heard of it, this release is absolutely fantastic and easily one of the years best... I think the link that ties all those bands together isn't geography, rather a love of modern English pop-punk bands like Leatherface and Snuff. If you've ever heard Leatherface's Mush you'll see where D4 and all these other bands get a lot of their tricks. FORGET dashboard jesus, and saves the day, and Poision the fake metal. this is punk no bullshit. fuck the punk scene and its trendy circus. Funny that the "midwestern sound" includes a band from Chicago, one from Baltimore and one from Tokyo. Hey, one out of three ain't bad. But I do know what you're saying and I've tried to come up with a name for it myself. Nothing works. Hmm. "Situationalist Comedy" is a step up from "Versus God" as far as I'm concerned, but still can't match "Midwestern Songs..." The production is leaning towards the Midwestern Songs sound, and finally, Erik's voice sounds slightly normal -- aka, there's not a whole lot of effects put on it (anyone who has seen them live will vouch for the fact that Erik's voice is not that high live, even from the get-go). sounds incredible. can't wait to get this disk. Actually the guy at the beginning is from the band Sweet JAP, who actually opened for 'em at their cd release party. That was pretty tight, 'cause the guy did it here, too. Fucking sweet show, Patrick was getting trashed . . .and naked. that was pretty nasty, I was right in front of him. great album, though. |
