More material from Nirvana due out on November 1st

Just one year after the release of With the Lights Out, Geffen has announced the November 1st release of Sliver: The Best of the Box. The album follows the 3 CD/DVD box set collection from defunct "grunge" pioneers Nirvana who are widely credited with bringing punk, post-punk and indie rock into the mainstream. It will be rarities compilation and will feature the debut of three previously unreleased tracks.

According to this article, the album is also the first with involvement from the daughter of the late singer, Kurt Cobain. The now thirteen-year old Frances Bean Cobain was involved in the track and artwork selection for the release.

Since the suicide of Cobain in 1994, a number of releases have been release posthumously, including Greatest Hits, the aforementioned With the Lights Out and the live recording, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah.

It's pretty weak that the label spends so much time trickling out songs one-by-one from what is probably a huge vault, but this band was very important to the music scene. Even if you're not a fan, or you're too young to remember when they exploded, it was a huge effect. They brought (punk/indie/etc.) rock back to the mainstream and that had to be worth something.

That's fucking BULLSHIT. I remember well when they exploded. I remember the debut of Smells Lke Teen Spirit on 120 minutes and being confused by showing a dude in a Bad Brains T-shirt and Anarchy cheerleaders to drab music and calling this shit punk. Then it got worse when Pearl Jam releases a video with stage diving. All this shit came from punk and hardcore and then they introduced the culture with slow watered down music that's SAFE for everyone to like and now people will slam dance and crowd surf at an Ashlee Simpson show. And worst of all my friends and I all had to stop wearing the flannel shirts we always wore because we didn't want to be associated.

i'm actually really tired of the nirvana worship that's been going on lately. yeah, they did what they did pretty well, but grunge isn't a real style of music (none of the bands who played it originally had much in common stylisticially, it was just a made-up term to describe a local scene) and all nirvana did was polish up the sounds of a handful of beloved 80s punk and post-punk bands (husker du, dinosaur jr, meat puppets, etc). but they always end up on top of best-of lists and #2 on the vh1 list of all-time great albums and BS like that. they were the right band at the right time but DEAR GOD they were not one of the best bands ever. just because we're desperate for mainstream rock to get turned upside down again doesn't mean we need to engage in this shitty hero worship.

I completely agree with this statement. I never really cared either way for Nirvana, but what makes me actually dislike them was the insane cult worship surrounding them. Just let the band die.

Definately, that was Kurt's problem all along, like the famous Buzzcocks story, when Kurt met the Buzzcocks and they were like "holy shit, it's an honor to meet you" supposedly kurt was like "are you kidding? You're the fucking Buzzcocks, the honor is mine!" or some shit like that. He just saw himself as a guy who grew up listening to punk rock that started a band, nothing more really. Honestly, I love nirvana, of all mainstream bands they're probably my favorite, but the only thing they did that was truly a feat was driving Warrant and Queensryche off the radio!

ok... grunge isn't a "real style of music", but post-punk is? yeah, nirvana stole a lot from bands like the meat puppets, but to call their sound polished is pretty fucking ignorant. i agree that grunge was a stupid moniker for tasteless critics to classify a sound that they weren't familiar with, but to say that they were any less punk than bands like sonic youth is pretty biased. just listen to the songs and forget who sings them for two fucking seconds...

Not only that, but sure they took a lot of influence from other bands around at the time, but they had the most impact out of any of them and based souly on that Nirvana will always get top spot on the list. Sure the Pixies kicked a lot of ass, but if it wasn't for Nirvana breaking out only 100 people would have cared who they were.

I agree completely. The grunge moniker was handed out to any band who wore thrift store clothes instead of the over-the-top 80s duds. Even that concept is bullshit because Pearl Jam were just a bunch of Sunset Strip hair-metal failures who jumped onto the next big thing. (However Eddie V. has done some cool things since but not enough to make up for introducing the most annoying vocal-style trend ever to hit music.) Dinosaur Jr. was 100x the band Nirvana was, they just weren't as marketable.

say what you will about them, nirvana was always pretty good at promoting underground bands. I know for me they were the gateway band that eventually got me into real punk rock and for that im greatful. sure they were major lable and got uber popular so they cant be considered "punk"....but anyways, on the subject of this article, smells like tupac to me, i thought the box set was the rest of the unreleased......

No, it just means that the original poster has much lower standards for what constitutes a person being a called a genuis. Nirvana was a nice band, but Cobain was a mediocre guitar player who wrote jibberish for lyrics while in a herion induced haze.

He mixed punk rock with metal and arena rock, nothing that every other seattle band (minus pearl jam) weren't doing at the time, the same basic formula was used by the Melvins, Mudhoney etc.

I think all of the music should have been put out in 1995 when we actually gave a shit, it would have sold like hot cakes.
