Just one year after the release of With the Lights Out, Geffen has announced the November 1st release of Sliver: The Best of the Box. The album follows the 3 CD/DVD box set collection from defunct "grunge" pioneers Nirvana who are widely credited with bringing punk, post-punk and indie rock into the mainstream. It will be rarities compilation and will feature the debut of three previously unreleased tracks.
According to this article, the album is also the first with involvement from the daughter of the late singer, Kurt Cobain. The now thirteen-year old Frances Bean Cobain was involved in the track and artwork selection for the release. Since the suicide of Cobain in 1994, a number of releases have been release posthumously, including Greatest Hits, the aforementioned With the Lights Out and the live recording, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah. How is his daughter best qualified? Unless she had magical womb/infant music taste and skills of course. I can't forget about those babies with magical memories. 3+ Replies

Will Geffen ever stop milking Nirvana fans for all they're worth? 7+ Replies

Does Courtney Love take care of the daughter? If so, I feel horrible for that girl.

It's pretty weak that the label spends so much time trickling out songs one-by-one from what is probably a huge vault, but this band was very important to the music scene. Even if you're not a fan, or you're too young to remember when they exploded, it was a huge effect. They brought (punk/indie/etc.) rock back to the mainstream and that had to be worth something. 6+ Replies

You know what this means. The With the Lights Out box set is no longer a complete anthology. That means Geffen can release an even more complete Nirvana set!

i'm actually really tired of the nirvana worship that's been going on lately. yeah, they did what they did pretty well, but grunge isn't a real style of music (none of the bands who played it originally had much in common stylisticially, it was just a made-up term to describe a local scene) and all nirvana did was polish up the sounds of a handful of beloved 80s punk and post-punk bands (husker du, dinosaur jr, meat puppets, etc). but they always end up on top of best-of lists and #2 on the vh1 list of all-time great albums and BS like that. they were the right band at the right time but DEAR GOD they were not one of the best bands ever. just because we're desperate for mainstream rock to get turned upside down again doesn't mean we need to engage in this shitty hero worship. 7+ Replies

nirvana is more punk than a lot of stuff labelled punk today. I LIKE SETTING BOUNDRIES ON SUBJECTIVE GENRE MARKERS.
Someone (September 21, 2005)
say what you will about them, nirvana was always pretty good at promoting underground bands. I know for me they were the gateway band that eventually got me into real punk rock and for that im greatful. sure they were major lable and got uber popular so they cant be considered "punk"....but anyways, on the subject of this article, smells like tupac to me, i thought the box set was the rest of the unreleased...... 2+ Replies

We better get to hear at least one of these unreleased songs before this comes out. I don't wanna spend 15 bucks for 3 mediocre b-sides. 2+ Replies

I heard Courtney Love put a microphone to Kurt's tombstone and recorded it for a day. Geffen is releasing that CD next year, and she's releasing a booklet of never before seen photos of her not on drugs, then lots of them with her on drugs. 3+ Replies

Hmmm... With all of these post-humous releases from both parties, I think its safe to think a Nirvana / 2Pac collaboration is inevevitable.

It's sad & funny at the same time when you realize this is the kind of shit that Cobain would've hated. 2+ Replies

Before Nevermind was released and Nirvana and "grunge" got big, Rolling Stone or Spin or one of those mags or related media, named Danzig as the "Sound of the 90s" and the next big thing. Well, that never happened. Thank you Kurt Cobain. -skizot-

It's kinda fitting that they have a thirteen-year-old picking the tracks for this, since it's only thirteen-year-olds in hoodies who still find something relevant in Nirvana's music and message...
smackinisaiah (September 22, 2005)
Whether Nirvana was a good band or not, I personally hate the fact that in a lot of the media, half of the people think that if you like punk, you automatically like Nirvana, and they are some sort of influence to you. That's so wrong in like 37 different ways. I have nothing to share with Nirvana and I'm happy with that. Anyways, how about that new SAS cd?

So Nirvana is becoming Tupac? Releasing a CD every year with 'new' material again after being deceased for so long. Whats next? A fucking movie? Any way to make more money, I guess.
Someone (September 22, 2005)
nirvana suck shit the only reason people actually care about thier music is because that dumb fuck shot himself in the head if he hadn't this band would have faded away into obscurity ... which would have been a good thing
Someone (September 22, 2005)
They should either: a) put out an ep with the 3 songs on it b) pull out every other fucking song they've ever ever made and every live version of every song that hasn't been released and just finish this shit once and for all. I expect a cd of filler. and personally, using the kid to pick the music and artwork... GIMMICK!! I think all of the music should have been put out in 1995 when we actually gave a shit, it would have sold like hot cakes. I see the future now, Nirvana is going to have some sort of Beatles like revival for decades..... I am waiting for the song where kurt is singing a rap duet with some bling bling bedecked pervayer of more sampled unoriginality.... I've already heard the smells like teen spirit dance version....
