The Donnas start label through Redeye

In a move similar to that recently taken by the Pietasters, the Donnas have formed their own label through distributor Redeye USA. The label's name doesn't seem to have been announced yet.

The band will release their as-yet-untitled new record, the follow up to 2004's Gold Medal, this coming September. It was produced by Jay Ruston (The Polyphonic Spree, Meatloaf, Diana Ross). One new song from the release, "Don't Wait Up for Me," is available now on the band's MySpace site.

If labels are failing so much, why is everyone starting their own?

This is interesting because the band basically went without an existing label and just signed up directly with the distributor. I doubt it's a fully functioning company that they've started... but if they can bankroll their own recordings and via the internet promote it, then why go for the overhead and contractual ties of a traditonal label?

You'll see more and more bands do stuff like this.

Bands have been doing this for a looong time. I don't think you'll see any more or less of it. Distributors don't want to work with 1000 different labels to sell 1000 different releases. They want to work with 20 labels for 1000 different releases otherwise it's too many points of contact to manage. It'll never be a trend for that specific reason, it's just way to inefficient for a distributor to deal with tons of labels with a limited number of releases.

The only bands that you'll ever see do this are ones with enough selling power in their own right to attract a distributor with a big record or bands that aren't interested in touring much anymore and are willing to spend the time and investment to sign a big stable of relevant bands.

No distributor is going to take on a one-off label made for just one band with questionable retail power and then spend their time and money to manage another vendor.

Most bands who start labels to release their records dont start traditional labels per-se, but its just a name that is a vehicle to release their own music. The Donna's probably wont hire A&R staff, or a marketing department, etc, its really just to have a name on the record when they put it out so it doesn't get the stigma of being "self -released", a term most people equate with "sucks"

i loved the donnas when i saw them open for the ghoulies back in 98 (i think) but they started to get more and more bland in the years after that. the last time i saw them, which i think was with the eyeliners about 3 or 4 years ago, they just seemed to be going through the motions
