As promised earlier this year, Fall Out Boy today departed on a tour to take their hefty media profile to Uganda in the hopes of raising awareness for the charity, Invisible Children. The band recently told MTV about plans to visit Uganda to bring awareness to the plight of displaced children in the Central African nation, which for more than two decades has been suffering from a bloody civil war.
Labelmates Thrice were early supporters of the organization. They discovered the charity while working on the video for "Image of the Invisible." While the video was based on the fictional French film, it brought to the band's attention the plight of the children of Uganda, many of whom are kidnapped from their parents and forced to serve in the rebel armies currently in conflict with the government of the country. Spokesperson and bassist Pete Wentz recorded a short interview as the band embarked on the trip. Besides joking a little about the trip, Pete discussed what interested people can do to help the charity. Island Records (77 comments)

It's a good thing there's "charity" for egomaniacs to use so they can clear their guilt from being so shamelessly self indulgent and to make them look more noble in the eyes of the average person. 4+ Replies

So I saw Social DIstortion last week and the set list was pretty good. They played for an hour and 20 minutes. Mike Ness didn't really say anything original. Gave the "Back when punk was dangerous" line, brought the children on stage, said, "who wants to hear a love song," and explained that their new song is about an asshole. Heres the setlist from what I can remember. I was in 1+ Reply

I can't presume to know their intentions for this trip. I'll just say I really hope it's fully for the right reasons and not so they could get press and maybe help too.

so let me get this straight. they are touring there? ok A) the people are all starved poor people who probably don't know or give a fuck who these guys are and B) being as poor as they are could not afford to go see them. im a bit lost on this whole concept.

I wished Idi Amin Dada was around for this instance so he can eat Fall Out Boy.

Pete Wentz gets a lot of shit here, but he is really a great guy. He's the most humble, down to earth "celebrity" I've ever met. 2+ Replies

Look. The band would get way more publicity and sell more albums if they put out a new music video and Rihanna was in it. Rip them all you want, but they don't have to do this. So, maybe shut up and be glad they're doing something that's relatively legitimate.

Neither the interviewer or Wentz come off very well at all in this article.

With any luck they'll either get eaten by cannibals or starving children OR they'll stay in this "really cool hostel" (like the movie), get drugged by some girls (in the movie) and eventually get brutally tortured and murdered (like the movie).

A teacher over there was not impressed with the problems created by the shooting of the video. They seem to have caused more problems for the culture and people than they have helped. 2+ Replies

Turns out the children weren't invisible, they were just hiding behind their swooped hair across their eyes.

Boy, I sure wish I had enough money to parade around Uganda in a PR stunt to make me look like a charitable dude and reveal something everyone knows about but ignores. Don't pat yourself on the back too much Pete Wentz, all you did was show how your gross wealth and fortune is undeserved and the people we all rape.
Someone (July 18, 2007)
Sorry Fall Out Boy copying bands that do care about the third world (Dispatch) won't get you fans.

To all those people criticizing, what have you done for charity? Sat on your computer and criticized other people? Thats really helpful. 1+ Reply

God, all you elitist, anti-trend whores need to chill out. Okay, so maybe you don't like Fall Out Boy because you're just too cool, but take into consideration that they're actually using their fame to help. They're rasing awareness and getting kids behind the cause. It's not to make themselves look better (what an ignorant thing to say...) because I'm sure they don't really care what YOU think of them.
Someone (July 20, 2007)
To all those who have critized and said a whole load of shit, it doesn't make a difference, what you think, FOB is still goin to do this.
I actually think, that Pete is just pointing out things that people around the world, have just being intolerable about. Although it always seems to work out that when some huge celb. comes and does something, it seems to start a chain reaction. It may come across that when most celb.s do charity work, they do to get their names in the head lines, or become more honorable in our eyes, but maybe, just maybe, Fall out Boy is doing this for all the right reasons. Maybe, in some sort, are concerned about whats going on around the world. So think about it, if your reading this, you have no right to start to trash a band thats ACTUALLY doing something, whether its for fans, or to really help, their out there, trying to show rest of comment | Features
