Boston's Piebald is calling it quits. The band posted the following announcement on their website:
Friends, friends, friends…we have not posted anything anywhere in quite some time and our word on the street is that this is our last tour. All the preceding words are true and we have decided to put Piebald to rest. The past fifteen years or so have been nothing short of extremely incredible. We have met lots of people, been to lots of places and experienced a whole lot of life. In 1994 we started making music, screenprinting our own seven inch covers and borrowing our parents cars to get to shows. Since then, we have traveled the globe, released many records, and played thousands of shows; pedaling the righteous name of piebald to all whose paths we crossed. In celebration of the many years of good times and incredible accomplishments, we have decided to dedicate this tour to us; Piebald. Thanks to all who have helped in any and every way…families, friends, girlfriends, vans, bands, fans, promoters, labels, booking agent, lawyer, clubs, engineers, producers, and those who we forgot to mention. Now, this is not a teary eyed time, people. This is a time of new beginnings, positive vibes, and a congratulatory nod to the past. There has been talk of a few shows to give the band an official sendoff, but as of yet, those shows are not booked and unknown. Thanks for all the undying support. We love you.
Piebald last released Accidental Gentlemen in 2007. The band's final tour is ongoing and features the Format, Steel Train, Limbeck and Reubens Accomplice.

Well, their best days are definitely behind them in terms of recorded output, but this band is still fun as hell live. I'll be seeing them next week and have every intention of going crazy in the crowd.
wow. thats funny. my sister and I were just talking yesterday about how piebald have run their course and that it was probably past the point when they should bow out gracefully. If they play a last show in Boston, i'll be there. Good times.
I work at subway and have no problem hooking anybody up with anything they want. for cheap. i also steal a lot of food and lose the company money. oh well, shitheads. im goin for a foot long BMT with meatball sauce on italian herbs. and maybe ill see this show at the cradle
i think it's a good progression though. yeah, they probably let too much of the Mastodon influence in, but every time the dual guitar harmonies kick in, you're like "oh, that's definitely Baroness." And the vocals haven't changed much.
yeah, the dual guitars is baroness, the melodic vocals are a bit of a stretch. im not saying i don't like them, but i guess i am a bit too familiar with first, second, and third to imagine baroness with anything but mostly instruments and screams.
i like the album, but im weary of it because of the change. im sure itll grow on me soon.
You might wanna pick up a ticket in advance, the Format are inexplicably popular in Cleveland. I'm just going for the first three opening acts then peacing the fuck out.
Thanks for the heads up! You don't know me, but you were actually pressed up against me and singing very loudly at the last Piebald show I was at in Cleveland (with mewithoutYou and Say Anything at Beechland).
I plan on doing the same. I can't believe Piebald and Limbeck are opening for The Format and fucking Steel Train?! Yuck.
Yeah dude, none of those kids knew any of the songs and there were a few random older dudes like us having a party up there. I had a good time for sure. Then someone stole my hat and threw it on stage, then the one guy from Say Anything wore it and I thought I was going to have to fight a 14 year old girl to get it back but somehow it was miraculously returned to me!
The same thing happened when Piebald opened for mewithoutYou at the Grog Shop in June -- no one knew who Piebald were except for, like, three of us. So we bumrushed the stage, got right up front and had a fucking blast. We also had about 400 kids wondering just what the hell got into us. It ruled.
This really is a bummer. Piebald is one of those pop punk bands you never have to apologize for ever liking. Their records (especially "we are the only friends we have") were great and their live shows are rocking. They will be missed. If they get anywhere near atlanta im going.
That's because We Are The Only Friends We Have was an amazing record that was leaps and bounds above anything they did before it, and, sadly, contained promise for future releases that was never delivered on.
fuck! what a bummer. i know that most people, including myself, enjoyed their older records, but i still think that their last two records were great. i will miss them.
great band and will be missed. "if marcus garvey dies" was a very meaningful song to me and one that really captured the essence of the miseducation of suburban white kids.
i saw these guys at the knitting factory when they played with mc chris. i was too drunk to remember what they sounded like. i'll probably go to subway in a hour or so.
Go to my youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWpocwTNc8Y) its probably the last good piebald show that they have played and it was in 2001. I put the whole show on if you want to see it. It was super fun, too bad somehow they lost the fun part of the their band.
although, this is very, very sad news. i'm okay with this break up. in my opinion, piebald started to blow after "we are the only friends that we have".
Piebald holds a dear place in my heart, regarding music in my youth and nostalgia. While a break-up is never really great news, its about time. I always felt after "We Are the Only Friends We Have," it was perfect timing to deliver big in terms of a record release. What they should have done was sign to a major label that would have given them a greater exposure in a genre that was just starting to make it into the mainstream commercially. At that time, the major labels were salivating for indie-emo-hardocre bands to sign, such as Saves the Day, Dashboard Confessional, Thursday -- Even Cave In, Piebald's friends, got signed. Weezer was make a killing off thier "comeback" during this time, too. Basically, Piebald would've made a great major label band that would have still sounded great. Instead, Piebald signed to SideOneDummy. Nothing against that label, but they didn't do much exce

Instead, Piebald signed to SideOneDummy. Nothing against that label, but they didn't do much except keep the band's direction and exposure at the same level it already was. The last few albums sonically were one in the same. I just wish Piebald could have seen their potential before all this. I never expected them to stay together forever, but I think they deserved more credit (and a nicer paycheck) for all the hard work. "If It Weren't for Venetian Blinds, It'd Be Curtains for Us All" marked a big step in my personal musical growth, so for that I am greatful.
I agree, but you actually have your facts confused. They had lots of major label interest after "We're the Only Friends" came out (that time period where all the bands you mentioned were getting signed). There were a bunch of "problems" and they never signed and the label interest went away. They, basically, waited too long and no one was interested anymore. They were without a label for a long time (I think over a year or so, maybe 2) and Side One was one of the only labels that showed any interest.
My bad. That's kind of what I meant to say but I forgot about that whole period where they weren't on any label at all. You're right as is a few replies below, though -- Its not like they could have just upped and signed to a major because they wanted to, but it was evident they missed the boat or something when they had the chance.
From what I have been told second-hand, SideOneDummy was the only label who expressed any interest in putting out All Ears.... A band can't just decide to sign with a major label; one has to offer them a deal first.
wow man....this sucks. i'm....i'm......speechless. this band meant so much to me. just kidding. this band sucks fat cock. good to see another bunch of idiots go.
i'll miss them. i got to see them a ton of times though, so i guess i don't really have any piebald regrets. we are the only friends we have is a modern classic in my heart.
Bummer. Seems like a good time to do it though. I'll always remember fondly my friend Brandon and I doing American Hearts in a Harry Caray voice ala Will Ferrell. HEY! You're part of it!

I wish they could make it back to Houston for a real show, their last trip here was a pathetic openig slot of some band I honestly can't think of right now... and I've yet to hear "Haven't Tried it" live yet.
if i were to put together a list of the top 25 sets i've ever seen, these guys would be on it at least 3 times. it's sad to see them go. hopefully they'll book a couple more "last" shows in new england before they call it quits.
I will miss Piebald but I will not miss their Ben Folds-esque piano rock years. I wish they would go back to the Venetian Curtains sound.... wow, what a truly fantastic album. Good run, fellas.
oh well
