In what some might call a brutally honest yet hopelessly one-sided blog post the members of Dance Gavin Dance have outlined in very specific, uncomfortable terms that they singer Jonny has left the band. The full details are available via the link but the gist of it comes down to lifestyle decisions made by the singer involving substance use and financial dealings.
A biography of the singer and explanation for the split can be found here and the band is currently starting the audition process for a new singer. The band was touring in support of Downtown Battle Mountain with fellow Sacramentians Tera Melos and have had to cancel their appearances at those shows. Rise Records (68 comments)

that was a highly entertaining read. my favorite: Now many of you may being saying to yourselves, "but I love Jonny's voice" or "I've met him and he's nice, he can't be that bad." Well he is, and here is why. 2+ Replies

Why would anyone even put up with half that shit, if it is true. It was a great read though. I had a brief experience with this type of shit from the singer of a formally good (or entertaining) Canadian punk band years ago.
shot_in_the_dark (November 10, 2007)
I can't believe I just read all of that, but it was awesome.

Well, all I got from this story is that Jonny is fucking awesome 2+ Replies

holy rusty metal batman that was hilarious! judging from comments this seems exactly the type of band that would air out their dirty laundry on a blog post. I wonder if they would have mad the same choice looking at things backward through a picture they have taken of it in a mirror? 1+ Reply

This band is the equivalent of the girl that keeps going back to her boyfriend no matter how many times he hits her.

Homeboys have shitty haircuts, worse fitting jeans and wear loafers, I don't think I can take anything they say seriously. 1+ Reply

WOW! that was so awesome to read.

Like others have said, I have no clue who this band is, but that read was awesome.

A friend with a drug problem is such a serious bummer. You know you should stop fucking with the person, but what about those good times you played basketball together at the church and got caught stealing stickers from the post office?

Johnny was bad, even as a child everybody could tell 2+ Replies

Anybody else feel cheated after reading that only to find that their singer completely sucks? (`cause really, who here has actually HEARD of these guys?)
Jay3313 (November 10, 2007)
I don't care how many drugs or how much booze this "Jonny" drank, anyone who sings like that is not punk in any shape way or form.
thebigtakeover (November 10, 2007)
that was so funny. It sounded like one of those hilarious break up letters that kids send to each other in middle/early high school.
SkolarX (November 10, 2007)
while the guy seems fucked up, it also seems pretty catty to post all of that online. it would have been better to just leave it at "personal differences" or something
Lmnndtlgrph (November 10, 2007)
I think I'll join this band. If I have half the fun Jonny had, it'll be worth the move across the country. The best part is where they say the sent him "countless" $200 tickets (of some kind), which he used for drugs. Wow -really, dudes? So you sent him a $200 to come back home, he didn't come home, so you sent him a $200 ticket to get home, he didn't come home, and yet you continued to send "countless" tickets -at no point wondering if throwing away another $200 was really the best plan of action? The point is that I know these other dudes didn't send him "countless" $200 tickets -no one is that stupid. They did however, fill their myspace blog with lies and exaggerations. Jonny may be a douche bag, but he's not as bad as they make him out to be. And personally, I'd rather be an asshole than one of the tools in the toolbox that is Dance Gavin show rest of comment 1+ Reply

Whoever wrote this blog has no room to criticize another human being's writing skills. I hope this guy was as drugged up as the infamous Johnny because that is the only way to excuse his piss-poor writing. I suspect, my friend, that Johnny was not the only band member who never finished middle school...
counterfiction (November 10, 2007)
that dude can be in MY band anyday. sounds like fun.
swank (November 10, 2007)
I've never heard of this band before this morning but I don't know how you guy can critisize their innovative songwriting style. I mean first the singer goes all high and is like WAAAAAAAA and then, possibly even another singer, is all yelly-screamy? Who's done that before? Like nobody. Thats innovation, kids.
Autosuggestion (November 10, 2007)
I have the opposite of a problem with this. Oh man. The height of hilarity.
After reading the explanation, I have so many questions. The best part seems to be that after all of this, the singer wasn't kicked out of the band. He quit. And then they just wouldn't let him back in when he changed his mind. I don't know how anyone can believe 25% of this explanation. I don't know anyone who would put up with that much shit. And if they did, then where is there self-respect? They mean to tell us that they let this go on and on just like they described and just let Jonny walk all over them? And they attack his singing, which they must have been happy with, otherwise there really is no point in giving him 78 chances. That said, I would love to be Jonny's replacement. You could be the most irresponsible selfish asshole imaginable and they would love the fact that you show rest of comment

I heard a rumor that either Axl Rose or Scott Stapp is replacing this Jonny guy.
misterspike (November 10, 2007)
I have neither heard nor heard OF this band ... but that was a great statement. Some people may feel they've gone too far with airing so much dirty laundry about their now former singer -- but their fans have got to feel more respected for having them be so honest.
I'd be curious if the singer ever reponds to this. If everything that is in the blog is true, he sounds Far Gone. Being kicked out of a band is the least of his problems. Drinking so much that his stomach collapsed, had part of his intestines removed -- oh yeah, and that this condition has only happend to approx 25 people in the U.S. due to heavy drinking? Wow. I hope the band is able to move onward and upward ... even moreso I hope the singer is able to get himself together and healthy. I imagine when/if he does, he's going to look back at all of this with show rest of comment

Sadly this band is very popular here in San Jose
fox82 (November 10, 2007)
Entertaining reading! Kind of reminds of that junkie from Babyshambles in the UK (who's banging Kate Moss or whatever), only that dude could write music. Why didn't they get rid of homeboy a lot sooner though? Two years of that shit?
letthebeatdrop (November 10, 2007)
despite their stupid fucking name, this band isn't really all that bad ..

I wish I would have listened to the music before reading that whole thing. I expected a good singer. They could easily call that kid who was kicked out of From First To Last and nobody would ever know the difference. This shit sucks.
victim (November 20, 2007)
How could this stuff all be true in the first place? Multiple $200 ticket? Letting another member quit rather than Johnny? Another band member's parents putting up with that kind of behavior?
amorvincitomnia (January 18, 2008)
It sucks what happened to Johnny. I personally think that DGD was amazing with Johnny. But things happen.
TiffanyMacy (July 3, 2008)
Johnny has an AMAZING voice. DGD was a really good band. The music is great. It sucks that Johnny was kicked out, cause I would love to hear him sing the old Dance Gavin Dance songs. But now he is in Emarosa, so it's all good. At least I still get to hear that amazing voice of his. He's also in the song "Pueblo Cicada" by Lower Definition. You guys should download that song, and hear him sing. I love Johnny's voice. | Features
