This should read "Drum Magazine names Travis Barker, Tre Cool, Brooks Wackerman, Bill Stevenson as 'Punk Drummers We've Heard of.'"
Apeman_On_The_Moon (July 1, 2008)
I was driving home one weekend, and decided that the drumming on From Here To Infirmary is amazing. Mike Felumlee owns on that record.
Nameless (July 1, 2008)
Wow. How did Travis Barker beat Brooks Wackerman? Maybe it's just a personal preference talking, but this seems kind of off.
LORDSHREDDER (July 1, 2008)
Brooks is a good drummer, and is really going to show his talent in The Innocent.
lostandclowned (July 1, 2008)
Dave Grohl is the best drummer alive. whatcha got, scientistcock? OHHH!!!
Costanza (July 1, 2008)
travis's best work was take of your pants. really creative drum parts. after that....yawn.
Euphrates (July 1, 2008)
Even though he's not that "popular" Grahm from Belvedere and This is a Standoff is probably one of the greatest drummers i have seen live.
TheMexican (July 1, 2008)
I'm listening to the Nerve Agents as I read this. That guy is pretty fucking good.
nanobrontolo (July 1, 2008)
Is best hardcore a different category? Don't you think Chris Pennie should be up there?
Maccone (July 1, 2008)
How about Dave Grohn (Nirvana) William Goldsmith (Sunny Day Real Estate), Brendan Canty (Fugazi) Darrin Pfeiffer (Goldfinger) and Brandon Barnes (Rise Against).
allison_le_gnome (July 1, 2008)
I don't know anything about drumming! I guess I can recognize if it's particularly shitty but in general it's just not my area of expertise.
KSUpilot (July 1, 2008)
Derrick Plourde is one of the best punk drummers and one of my favorite drummer of all time.
Chupachup_Punk (July 1, 2008)
I think the several Death By Stereo drummers all deserve mention
bikeage (July 2, 2008)
stevenson probably gets weirdest with ALL and only crime
jumptheshark (July 2, 2008)
Totally agree about Tre Cool. I'll always have a huge soft spot for Green Day, and like the album or not, his drumming on American Idiot is damn impressive.
jesuschrist (July 2, 2008)
not travis.....god damnit!......i'm sick and fuckin tired of everyone thinking that he's this "technically superior drummer"...........he's not...
GnarlyDudes (July 2, 2008)
Josh Freese - The Vandals
Dudley_Shale (July 2, 2008)
I'd like to point out three things:
Jeevz (July 2, 2008)
Green Day and Plus 44 or whatever their called aren't even punk bands. I'm cool with Brooks but Bill Stevenson, come on. Where the fuck is Rodrigo from the Satanic Surfers, he sings and plays at the same time. Killer fucking beats!
Jeevz (July 2, 2008)
Smelly from NOFX and Derrick Plourde from earlier Lagwagon aren't anywhere to be found either, Travis Barker's a fucking sold out loser.
Jeevz (July 2, 2008)
My all-time fave is Byron McMackin from Pennywise, followed by Smelly from NOFX, Derrick Plourde from early Lagwagon, Rodrigo from the Satanic Surfers and Jordan Burns from Strung Out in no particular order. Obviously the losers that write for this mgazine don't know hardly any indy punk bands. Green Day, Blink 182, Plus 44, Puhhhlease!
crackpotdemagogue (July 2, 2008)
i think Duncan Redmonds (snuff drummer, vocalist) also deserves a mention here. that guy is fucking awesome.
SydBarrett420 (July 2, 2008)
LOL, what a lame list. Both Finch's drummer and the drummer for Trophy Scars are much better than anyone mentioned on the list.
Paulrulzdood (July 2, 2008)
you know who's actually real good at drums? That dude LP from Yellowcard, I know, I know, its Yellowcard, but he's actually really fuckin good, reminds me of Barker but better. But Jordan Burns, Josh Freese and Derek Grant are probably my favorites.
Cottage_Cheese (July 2, 2008)
I know it's probably not considered punk, but Bert & Ernie are just fucking brutal
thevee (July 2, 2008)
I'm just gonna throw Jared Shavelson, from Paint it Black and None More Black there.
ludwigg (July 2, 2008)
first of all, this is a READER-VOTED list...so you can assume these readers aren't as in-the-know on "punk drummers," as people here. no surprise that drummers in popular bands made the list over drummers that deserved some love. but this list is best WORKING drummers, and the results are most likely based on their achievements and success as a musician.
facetofacereunion08 (July 2, 2008)
Chris Thatcher from Streetlight!
Grue (July 2, 2008)
Jonah Falco from Fucked Up is pretty cool:
elstevo777 (July 2, 2008)
how come punknews.org didn't mention josh freese got a nod for best studio drummer? josh freese is pretty damn awesome in my book
taydor_b (July 2, 2008)
I know everybody's saying Derrick Plourde of early Lagwagon, but his replacement, Dave Raun is just as solid. Later Lagwagon has awesome drumming and has anyone heard Rich Kids On LSD - Riches To Rags? That album is pure genius in every way.
LookBackAndLaugh (July 2, 2008)
Yeah, I'd have to say that Ben Koller, Gil Sharone, and perhaps Sammy Siegler are at least better than travis barker.
evilindustrytype (July 2, 2008)
Unreal how some people here think certain drummers are so good, one in particular just learned how to play with two cymbals on his kit and they are supposed to be bummed?
evilindustrytype (July 2, 2008)
Oh i forgot.
ghpunkguy (July 2, 2008)
Jordan Burns is MUCH better than Travis Barker. I mean, come on, listen to a Blink record and then listen to Strung Out's "Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues". Blink doesn't even hold a candle in the drumming department.
Threewords (July 2, 2008)
travis haters look here:
BlackRonin (July 2, 2008)
George Hurley RIGHT ON!! But also, and I know Im showin my age here but Chuck Biscuits anybody???? DOA/Flag/Samhain/The good Danzig records/Social D???? I mean He can REALLY beat the tubs. How about Dave Grohl's work as a power hitter with finesse in Scream,The rawwer Nirvana stuff(Territorial Pissings!! Good Stuff! C'mon) and that record he drummed for Killing Joke was sweet!
ludwigg (July 2, 2008)
also, my frand Paul Quattrone in Midnite Snake is reeeeeeaally fun. He's also in Modey Lemon. Check them out.
ARROBAST (July 2, 2008)
I'm no drummer, but why hasn't anyone mentioned Riley Breckenridge from Thrice. That's some good stuff.
dickvain41 (July 2, 2008)
You assholes suck so bad!
clam_tears (July 2, 2008)
Phil Collins.
no_face (July 2, 2008)
i agree with everyone saying derek grant, destruction by definition is probably the best drumming ive ever heard
LikeJackDalrymple (July 4, 2008)
Watch the Vandals "Show Must Go Off" DVD. Josh Freese is amazing. Ta boot he plays a song one handed while smoking a cigarette. One Man Orgy rocked my socks off too. Caffeine and Vaseline!
BULLWINKLE (September 24, 2008)
Tre's awesome. He deserved to be number one tho instead of number two tbh. IMO |
