Mastodon to release new album in early 2009

Artist Direct recently sat down with Mastodon to get a status update on their follow up to 2006's highly acclaimed Blood Mountain.

We finished the bulk of it. All of the basic tracks are done. We finished them on the Monday before we flew out to Seattle to start this tour. We go home on August 23rd. Then we have 10 days booked in the studio to touch up things, add any bells and whistles, take away anything we don't want, mix it and then figure out the sequencing. We have until Labor Day to finish it. We're hoping that it comes out in January. It should see light at the beginning of 2009.

The band are working with Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen, Rage Against the Machine) as the producer for the new record, with the lyrical focus set to explore topics relating to Czarist Russia.

Going on the other works of the producer (excluding RATM), I am a little scared. They should be going to someone that will capture their intense crushing thunder.

Mastodon rules though. Very unique and talented stuff. I do like Blood Mountain, but it shows signs of the band potentially slipping if they continue with the label's demands.

also, this kinda stuff along with akimbo, black sabbath and older 80s thrash metal like metallica, razor or anthrax is the kind of metal i can dig.

i don't really get into the super technical guitar/ triggered drums or 8 minute prog metal. anyone else with me here?

This album will be either their deserved mind-blowing entrance into mainstream rock, or it will suck and be a transparent failure at achieving the aforementioned and relegate them to nostalgic metal festival status.

I do wish these dudes success. Brann is a messiah of rock drumming. But I can also see them face-planting on an attempt at a "breakthrough" and never recovering from it. Shit happens when drugs are a major influence on your art. First it giveth, then it taketh away...

I like Mastodon a lot, but I have to take them in small doses -- mainly due to the drumming. Brann is a gifted drummer no doubt, but the constant rolls and fills makes me a little figetdy. He'll be a great jazz drummer when he gets older.
