Deftones bassist in coma after car crash

The Sacramento Bee is reporting that Deftones bassist Chi Cheng is in a coma in a San Jose hospital after a car accident in Santa Clara on Monday. The band's vocalist, Chino Moreno, had only this to say:

I don't know everything that's going on -- I just know it's very serious. I'm on my way to be with his family, I'm pretty freaked out about it.

The band was working on their sixth studio album, Eros, set for a spring 2009 release.

Dammit, I hope with all my heart that he recovers fully. Deftones were basically the band that showed me heavy music could be angry, passionate and beautiful at the same time, and opened my eyes to a whole slew of great bands. They'll always have a special place in my heart.

I agree with Cheesetits, this band always gets lumped together with shitty bands and that's really unfortunate. I'm really surprised by the lack of respect this band gets on this website. If the topic was about some local nobody punk guy, who happened to have a basement band and he was suffering from a tumor, you guys would be all over that shit.

anyways hope he pulls through, certainly a great musician and although i haven't liked all their output they are an undeniably great band.

This sucks. Although I am no die hard Deftones fan, I do think they are alright and tend to get lumped in unfairly with plain old "nu metal" bands. I mean come on, they were cool enough to bring Quicksand with them when they had their reunion tour.
