Teen Idols return from retirement

The Teen Idols have returned after a five and a half year dormancy. The band has returned from retirement with plans to record new albums and start playing shows again. Phillip Hill and Keith Witt are returning at guitarist and lead vocalist. The band now features drummer Nathan Bice, who's previously performed in Even In Blackouts and Deadly Sins. An announcement regarding a new bassist is forthcoming.

The Teen Idols were formed in Nashville in 1992 by guitarist Phillip Hill and singer Matt Benson. The band went through numerous line up changes over the years, releasing records for House O' Pain, Fat Wreck Chords sublabel Honest Don's and Fueled By Ramen. The band last released Nothing to Prove in 2003 and broke up during the supporting tour. The group is now based in Chicago, IL.

They had a cross promotional/distro partnership with Epitaph. Then Epitaph started trying to pinch all their acts for the ANTI imprint and leave Fat Possum out in the cold. So the relationship quickly folded on a sour note.

I saw them open for NOFX in Greece back in '98 and the coolest thing about them was their ultra-hot girl bassist in bondage or whatever. Happy days.

The Beatles: Important band or completely overrated? Discuss.
I have to go with the former, their songs were either great pop tunes or subtly complicated, and their advances in the studio are still used today by just about everyone.

The Who bore the hell out of me. I couldn't tell you why... But they do. I enjoy The Beatles, but I only listen once in awhile... I'll break out The White Album on vinyl, smoke a couple bowls, and dive in.

Both. They wrote a number of great hits and remain influential, but people tend to gloss over the fact that they also wrote a lot of shitty songs (these tend to be people that only own one of the band's numerous greatest hits albums). At any rate, I went through my Beatles phase several years ago, but now when any of their songs come up on my iPod I skip them.

Good band, wrote a lot of good songs. "Oh Darlin'" on Abbey Road is probably my favorite song of theirs.

For what its worth though, I will never have a deep emotional connection to them like I do with the Descendents, Operation Ivy, Rancid, or any of the bands that really spoke to me in my teenage years. The only reason we're still talking about the Beatles is because the boomers can't shut the fuck up about them.

Important in a lot of ways. "Sgt. Pepper's" is really a monumental point in Western cultural history. A lot of people would argue, but ignoring their cheesy early stuff there isn't a single Beatles release that doesn't still hold up. The only thing that diminishes their impact is the fact that everyone on earth has been saturated by them for 40 years now; it's impossible to listen to them objectively unless you've taken a mind-erasingly huge amount of acid, or something. Man.

I talked with Matt the drummer for the Teen Idols who plays for the Queers now. He said Fat Mike had told them he wanted another Teen Idols album. Now that they're getting back together, I'm surprised to see that Matt isn't going to be the drummer. Although playing for the Queers is a more steady gig.

Unless they find another lady or a guy with a really high voice, most of their songs will lose their primary appeal without Heather. The vocal interplay was the only thing that distinguished this band, though Philip is solid and Keith has some decent pipes. And even though their recordings are auto-tuned as fuck they still pulled it off live.

I haven't listened to them in at least five years, though. I forget what caused them to self-destruct; somebody's coke addiction or something? Better to stay dead.

This is what I'm concerned with, the harmonies were held together by Heather. (poet!) I'm still stoked that they're back with the best singer and operating in my hometown though. I should audition in drag for a bass player, their songs are pretty simple and I can rack myself before each show to get the pitch just right.

I heard about this the other day and thought it was a joke. I used to like Teen Idols, but i just recently went back and listened to their albums and they didn't have that many good songs. I do think it's pretty ridiculous that the real lineup isn't even involved. I might go see them if it was the lineup of Heather, Keith, Matt and Phillip, but this is just lame. Oh well, I guess I can still hope for Bullets To Broadway to start playing again. I think they were a better band anyway for the short time that were active. Put this shit to death.
