J. Robbins to record Thorns Of Life debut

Brooklyn, New York's Thorns of Life will be entering the studio with J.Robbins (Jawbox, Burning Airlines), for their debut album. The band (as it may have been mentioned before) is the collaboration of Blake S. (Jets to Brazil, Jawbreaker), Aaron Elliott (Crimpshine, Cometbus) and Daniela Sea (The Gr'ups, The L Word), and you can read about it at The A.V. Club.

i'm embarrassed that i havent actually eaten at the weenie beanie. a lot of dc-hardcore history took place there (or at least a lot of bands have eaten there after recording), its been around forever, and they have chili dogs (or half-smokes) and nc-style bbq, two of my favorite foods.

but its in a weird spot so i never went.

actually the homeless folk in arlignton are pretty rich, by hobo standards anyway. they rarely ask for money, several wear old, dirty suits, while they sleep on benches, and one guy sets up shop every summer in ballston with a sign that says 'homeless- please help - NO fast food NO alcohol NO pizza'

i mean, i heard beggars cant be choosers but apparently not in my affluent area.

as for this news item: I have had the opportunity to meet this guy when he was in Jawbox, Burning Airlines, and at the Dismemberment Plan reunion show at the Black Cat and he was always the nicest dude (as well as a hell of a guitar player).

I gave it a chance. It was not funny. I'll place some of it on first show jitters, but a lot of it was kind of awkward, especially the way he interrupted Robert Deniro every three seconds.

It was alright... the Roots were rad (I don't see them doing that gig for too long), that bit where they have people lick stuff was really lame (they shoulda brought out a used Q-tip or a steaming pile of shit for the last licker).

I'll give him a chance, but he'll never be able to fill Conan's shoes (a really funny sidekick could help).

Can't wait. I think I've liked everything Blake has done--even Four-Cornered Night and Perfecting Loneliness. They played a show near me just before they broke up, but it was 21+ and I could not get in at the time.

Hey, I don't make the rules. Essentially, it's designed to throw them off. You kidnap them and take them to the burn site. They see the effigy and assume all is well, it's just a demonstration. Then you burn them too. It's a rope-a-dope.

Also, the burning of the effigy first totally riles up the crowd. It's like an opening act. Because really you can only burn so many actual humans.

Blake Schwarzen.'s son was born retarded so he left it on the side of the road in Brooklyn.

I'm not sure whether he died, was claimed by the police and put in an orphanage, or was taken to the black market chop-shop and sold for spare parts.

J. Robbins seems to do a lot of Jade Tree projects, but in interviews Blake said that they wanted to release the album on their own label.

Some of it is okay - but too self-consciously rehashing previous sounds - but a lot of it is really embarassing. I point you all to "The First Time" and "Track Bikes."
