"Emo" is fourth scariest word on the web

According to a recent Guardian report, the fourth scariest word for parents right now is "emo." The word is among the ten most common words that parents are blocking their children from searching for. Other words include "suicide" and "depressed" and "skinny."

The source of the paranoia about the otherwise innocuous word likely stems from media coverage of a recent suicide and similar incidents.

As Punknews.org has mentioned before, we urge people facing depression or suicidal thoughts to consider calling 1-800-SUICIDE where they can speak to a counselor. Prevent children from searching for words like "depression" and "suicide" does absolutely nothing to prevent tragic incidents from occuring.

I know, it's part of why it's depressing. One of my earliest distinct memories was being worried my dad was going to be deployed for Gulf War I. I remember that year really fucking well and it just bums me out thinking about the endless march of time.

Yeah, I know how it is. That's pretty consistent across most boards I have been to.

I am finishing up my last year of University and have free access to the school gym, but it isn't very good. I used to frequent the place a couple years ago, but fell out of it and never gathered the motivation to go back. I plan to go to a real gym when I move away, though.

Bands like Rites of Spring, Embrace, Moss Icon, etc.....all AMAZING bands, some of the all time best actually....first were described as being "emotional" in context rather than just hardcore aggression and occasional violence associated with hardcore. But, you have all made a fatal mistake here- this form of 'emo' has absolutely NOTHING to do with the garbage that is called emo today...these bands today were not influenced by any of these legendary DC bands nor are any of the sounds/lyrics similar....comparing this mid-80's dischord 'emo' sound to what is called 'emo' today is like comparing the Wolf Eyes to Britney Spears, nuff said.

Usually the only people who search "racism" are people looking to write an essay or report on the subject for school. Besides, googling racism brings up information on what it is, why it's wrong, etc., not much racist material. As well, racist people are probably less likely to use the words racist and racism.

Really if your kids are having problems you ought to take them to see a counselor. Thinking you're going to keep them from knowing what suicide is by blocking serach terms on your computer is like thinking teenagers will never ever ever have sex if we just don't teach them about it in school. Putting your head in the sand never solved anything.

Really I think most kids should be given a box of condom, a crate of cheap 40's, a copy of My Brain Hurts, and told to figure shit out.

My definition of "emo" (I hate that fucking word by the way) kinda died out when the last of the mid-90's midwestern bands dissolved. Christie front drive, Boys life, Chamberlain etc...That was it's swan song for me. The current stuff (post '97) is more like an inbred bastard child to hair metal.

Also, I have bi-polar and social anxiety disorder so I can say this: Don't be such a fucking pussy, suck it up. If you're young it's likely you have better years on the way.

It would be awesome if some kid was googling the number to the suicide hotline and it was blocked so the kid kills him/herself. Parents would feel awesome.

yah. but it would be lost on anyone unless the kid quickly whipped up a note saying, "i was googling for help when i died"

Is the 'emo movement' really that synonymous with suicide and depression?

I'm guessing we don't have such a high concentration of emo kids as you do in the States, but I have always experienced them to be just a bunch of idiots with horrible fashion and music sense.

Also, the ones I've seen at uni think they're really underground standing around talking about their favourite band (who probably just played a stadium concert). This always pisses me off. I hate self-conceited fuckwits.

You're right. Couldn't speculate of it's influence outside of the U.S., but when you weed through all of the bullshit it's just another fad. Nothing more, nothing less.

Like disco, hair-metal, grunge and punk rock at their respective peaks, it's only a matter of time before the indoctrinated public find something else they feel they can better relate to, thus the cycle begins again. Remember this is America, we do what our televisions tell us.
