Pirates buy ten times more music, says report

Ars Technica has posted about a new study from Norway found that those who said they download illegal music for "free" bought ten times as much legal music as those who never download music illegally.

Unsurprisingly, the labels disagree with the results with EMI saying:

There is one thing we are not going away, and it is the consumption of music increases, while revenue declines. It can not be explained in any way other than that the illegal downloading is over the legal sale of music.

Yeah I don't know, for me personally - I've bought a shit ton of music and merch that I otherwise would never have bought or heard had I not heard it through illegal means first, because I wouldn't have known it existed anyway. That's probably not the case for everyone, namely mainstream music, but I would think that that is more apparent in the independent/punk scenes

It's because the people who spend time downloading music are more interested in music and therefore are willing to buy more. These are the people who just want more and more music, they download it when they can or buy it if they have to. The other people only want a couple albums a month or whatever so they buy them, blablablabobloblaw. I don't know how to say what I'm trying to say... If you stopped illegal music downloading, these people would only buy more music and so from that I would say there is still a reason to put an end to it... from the corporations' standpoint.

also - people that download lots of music illegally are, like you said, interested in music and albums, etc. In which case they are usually also willing to pay for full albums and support bands. People that download legally just download a couple of radio hits per month of itunes and that's it.

I have downloaded a couple of albums but I regularly buy most of my music without downloading it. I just feel with album streams, myspace and other promotional ends it's a strange excuse to say, "I just want to hear it before I buy it". Even small bands can effectively get their music out to a world wide audience for next to nothing.

As others have said,I really think you have to draw a distinction between pop and independent music in this subject. In my experience, people who listen to more independent music are more likely to BOTH buy and steal music. Those I know who listen to more pop and download - buy almost NOTHING (maybe 1 disc a year).

What makes music any different than that sruff? People work their asses off and put a lot of money into making an album. If they want to give it away for free, that's great, but lots of them want to be able to continue working on more music and putting out more albums and touring and stuff, and they can't do that if they never have any money.

I think one thing that all the corporations forget about is that there could be other reasons for a decrease in music sales.

These include rise in cost of necessities, competition from video games and cell phones. TV shows being on DVD. all that jazz.
