MySpace launches musician dashboard

Though Facebook is recieving most of the attention these days, MySpace remains dominant when it comes to musicians offering music and correspondence with fans.

To that end, the site has introduced a Music Artist Dashboard which promises to provide

global artists and labels with detailed analytics about their content within the MySpace community including charts, graphs, and snapshots. Data includes fan geography, song plays, profile views, friend count, and profile visitors.

It wasn't "NPR" exactly, but one of the people the spoke to. They were discussing how Myspace has developed a niche market. While facebook has mostly white, upper class kids, myspace is still the local for more urban and minority kids. They said it was a good opportunity to do niche marketing and this guy was a detractor and basically said, "no one wants to market to poor mexicans". It was rad.

actually, for newer, more mainstream oriented bands, analytics like this are fucking huge.

they seem to think that having access to this kind of information is all they'll need to hit the big time. you should have seen the reaction this guy got giving a presentation (at the future of music policy summit) for the new analytics site, bandmetrics. people were flipping out like it was going to make their careers. it's like they don't realize that they need fans before they'll ever have fan activity worth tracking.

Aha! I see your point. I was looking at it from my point of view (the fan). That stuff is fairly meaningless to me. However, as you pointed out, for the band, those metrics can be useful.

Band: "Can we play a show?"
Venue Personell: "Are you guys any good?"
Band: "Well, if I can bring your attention to this chart, you can see that over the months of June, July and September, we averaged 72 plays per hour."
Venue Personell: "you're booked!"
