Trailer, song for Lou Reed & Metallica‘s ’Lulu' posted

A trailer/interview with Lou Reed and Metallica about their upcoming collaboration titled Lulu has been posted online. As reported in June, the metal and punk/post-punk icons collaborated on the album at Metallica's studio north of San Francisco with 10 songs primarily composed by Reed but arranged by Metallica. The first song from the project titled "The View" surfaced via YouTube in late September.

I'll let everyone else tackle the music aspect, but I will say that I had first misread the news blurb as saying "The first song from the projected surfaced via 'The View'" and I had images of James Hetfield having an awkward conversation with Joy Behar.

I guess this isn't a very punk song, nor particularly punk musicians - so I'm not terribly surprised by the reaction. But I think the song is pretty cool. Reed's almost spoken word work on top of some metal riffs is an interesting dynamic, and it's nice to hear unique stuff like this every once in awhile instead of the same old same old.

And what exactly are you implying when you say that the lack of a punk influence somehow explains this community's negative reactions? Like we're incapable of listening to any type of music outside of the punk spectrum, let alone being able to praise or criticize it without bias? That's fucking stupid.

That was your implication. What exactly are you "not surprised" by? I take neither side on the matter: nothing is definitively good or bad...whether you like the song or hate it, whatever, it's cool. However, to defend your like of it by essentially saying to the naysayers "well, it's not a punk song, so obviously you guys don't know what you're talking about" seems a little indignant.

I don't even listen to punk, at least not enough where I can tell the difference between what's good or bad punk (there's a difference?), but I really don't care for the song. Then again, I'm not a fan of Metallica and I more respect Lou Reed than I do listen to him.

I looked at the comments and there wasn't a single one remotely positive - just ridiculous statements like "Two musicians who haven't mattered in 20+ years making shitty music together." I offered one hypothesis on the extremely negative opinions - that I guess this material doesn't sync up with the normal demographic of this site. That does not imply that punk fans, or any fans, are unable to judge music outside their normal proclivities - it is just commenting on the basic truth that you're less likely to get positive opinions on material from groups of people who aren't interested in said type of material in the first place. This record seems pretty removed from the normal "Org-core" bands that are the most popular around here, as well as featuring musicians a generation or two older than said current popular bands.

It was not meant to be an implication of anyone's poor taste, nor was it a specific response to any individual poster - just commenting on the overwhelming vibe coming off from the thread. And if even that was wrong, I apologize. Like I said, it was not meant to be an attack, just a casual segue intto my differing opinion about the song.

Don't take it too personally...it's just really not that uncommon that whenever there's a story on some "outsider" band here that invokes a lot of negative criticism - be it justified or not - there's always at least one defender who says something like "as this isn't punk, this negativity doesn't surprise me", etc., which always comes off as slightly snobby.

Keep in mind, artists like Tom Waits and Neil Young get unanimous praise on this site, and some of the "orgcore" bands often get a fair amount of backlash, as well. If these people don't like something, then it's simply because they don't like it...taking the time to do a quick Google search, it seems reviews of this song range from mixed to negative, so I don't think any punk bias is figuring into how people are perceiving the song.

I love old Metallica (who have egregiously sucked for 20 years, much less mattered). I love Lou Reed/VU. I was interested to hear this; it's not awful, but it didn't strike me as anything noteworthy. I'll reserve my judgment until I hear the whole album. This includes judging people who're spreading a bad "vibe" about it, because they may very well be right.

Naw dawg, you're right. St. Anger was probably the most pivotal album of said year. And, "Ecstasy" was way better than "Mediocre at best". Hey, I hear U2 is still making music, they were great in 1983, I bet they're still reinventing rock today!

Death Magnetic fuckin killed. Didn't reinvent anything, just a return to their classic sound. That said, it brought Metallica back to relevancy within the metal community, and certainly re-invigorated their live performances.

Death Magnetic was a 6/10 at best. There were good moments but the songs as a whole were drawn out with not enough good ideas in them. It's as if the band said "People love our old stuff, and our old stuff was all pretty long, so let's just do that" and forgot that an 8 minute song on Master of Puppets was great because of all the great riffs that kept the songs interesting, not a simple verse-chorus-verse progression stretched out to 8 minutes. Knock two minutes off of most of DM's songs and that album is pretty solid. As it was released, it's ok, but I'm not going to listen to it instead of ...And Justice For All.

I love 'Metal Machine Music'...though, obviously, it's a project meant to be judged conceptually rather than on the basis of its sound. Not that I'd expect anyone on *Punk*News to grasp anything less subtle than, say, an explosive kick to the groin.

Considering most of my favourite bands consist of boring indie rock bands with concept albums, I don't need any snarky comments about what music I'm capable and incapable of grasping. Metal Machine music is like the distorted sounds of a dump truck being fucked by a bulldozer, and if you actually enjoy the sounds of grating feedback, then all the power to you.
