Our stream today comes from our pals in Burlington, ON-based Silverstein. We've got an extra special selection from the band's new album, Short Songs. The band told us that their version of the NOFX song was a response to the thread on Punknews.org where they revealed the details behind Short Songs.

Hmm. I wrote this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Equals_Death and I used Punknews as one of the main sources. I did it after finding out that the article on Love Equals Death had been deleted several times previously on the basis of notability & lack of source coverage. I thought "I bet I can find enough coverage in a quick search of the 'org and altpress.com to write a decent article", & I was right. Of course I had to include the info about the charges, as it directly affected the band, but I included his quote too.

The news postings and staff reviews are considered reliable (not the comments or user reviews, obviously). Punknews has editorial oversight and a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. I use it to source band & album articles all the time, because it gives coverage to a lot of acts that the mainstream news sources don't. They ask for a source when you're submitting news, and according to the FAQ they generally confirm it with the artist or record label if it's questionable. It's rare that I've seen a news posting that's been blatantly inaccurate.

I can only assume the above poster was, too. The utter LACK of fact-checking and competent editorial oversight is what makes this site an unreliable source. See the recent two-time Indonesia fuck-up for a perfect example. If this were a newspaper the person responsible would have been fired or demoted.

Send any Punknews article to a journalism professor and see what they think of it.

Nobody would use PunkNews as a source for actual news. I've referenced it a few times in a couple of band articles, but it's always been for interviews, announcements of new albums, etc..

Well I was thinking more about Wikipedia and journalistic standards for reliable sources. Punknews is several notches below even TMZ in that regard. And if you ask PN why, they'll play the poor-little-us "volunteer-run" card. Except you won't see it followed up by requests for applications.

Most bands/labels read the Org. And some of them post. Chris Hannah sometimes shows his virtual face, as does Fat Mike very occasionally.

Yeah, as someone who did music publicity for a long time, even if I wasn't a fan of the site already, it was still my job to 1) know that Punknews existed, 2) pitch Punknews for appropriate bands and 3) keep tabs on what they're posting about the bands I repped. Most label people don't post for professional reasons- depending on how their company feels about it, many prefer to keep a low profile- but that certainly doesn't mean they aren't reading.

Anyway, this song just made my day. Thanks for the laugh, Silverstein.

Eazyd made fun of Propagandhi saying they were too stupid to know how to write a chorus and Chris responded with "Zing!" or something like that. Also Chris playfully(?) threatened to punch MattRamone if he sees him at a show. That's all I can remember, pretty hilarious stuff though.

Well i can tell ya for sure that real "punk" bands like "propagandhi" "toys that kill" Future Virgins" Hidden Spots" "ADD/C sure as shit don't waste there time on punknews.org reading what is the equivalent to the national enquirer, no sir there are either in there practice spaces tearing shit up, playing shows, writing, spending time with family etc etc. Not reading these dumb ass comments on here

Basically everybody does these days, but if it's noticeable then it's done badly. I'd take a slightly flawed vocal performance over something that sounds fake and robotic any day. NOFX still manages to avoid sounding like they need the computer to help.

I always think it's insane when bands, or any artists, get all bent out of shape over criticism or mockery. It's not like you're just walking along minding your own business and all of a sudden people start coming up to you and criticizing what they perceive as your bullshit. ummmm, wow. that......fuck......do i ever hate the taste of crow. that was hilarious. and pretty well put together. and name-dropping jesus chris always wins a point from me. in all fairness, half my hate came from the fact that (since you read this site possibly?) shane, you were a total ASSHOLE when you came through c-town, pei way back in the day. i doubt very much you remember me, but you dont snub a guy who shows up to hear your not-that-big-a-deal-at-the-time band. good tune, and if the rest of them are half that good, it'll be an entertaining listen.
