I think bands should always be referred to in the singular unless it's explicitly plural, eg Refused has announced a reunion vs The Bouncing Souls have announced a new tour.

PunkNews only corrects things for vanity, not professionalism. There have only been two instances where I can recall that they immediately corrected something, and neither were proper errors.
The first was a story about the Roots/Fishbone/Bachmann debacle which included an extraneous paragraph making jokes about what other ska songs could serve as themes for politicians. I commented only that I disliked when PunkNews tries to be funny and it was removed within minutes.

The second was when they reported on the death of Redson Pozzi of legendary Brazilian punk band Cólera. Since the site had obviously never heard of them, they represented the band by posting a very shitty-quality fan-shot video of them doing a Clash cover. I posted a link to one of their music videos and it was included in the article within an hour.
