Like it or not, Avail is much better than most of your favorite bands. And they've been doing it a hell of a lot longer.

Avail's second Fat release, "Front Porch Stories", is an homage to Richmond, like most other Avail releases, and brings Avail back to their humble roots. Unlike the jerky feel of "One Wrench", Avail has gone back song structuring of such classics as "Satiate" and "Over the James", hardcore with southern flavor.

Immediately a new sense of progression can be seen in the band's songwriting with the introductory track "Black and Red". Timed a more traditional pace than your average Avail tune, the song combines terrific melodies with the classic Tim Barry lyrics.

Next follows "Blue Times Two". Smooth melodies and a hard-hitting chorus provide the construction for what could be the album's best track.

The album also comes back to Avail basics with a slew of slower tracks complimenting Tim's incredible range as a vocalist.

The high point of the album may be the combination of "Done Reckoning" and "East on Main" (which is rumored to be the first "single" as footage from and upcoming RVA Avail show will be used for the video). Both show the strengths of Avail in the highest form, powerful lyrics, and the tightness of a veteran band.

When you think of Avail, one doesn't generally get the idea of one person with some band members. You don't just see Tim, or Gwomper or even Beau, you just see Avail, which is pure cohesion. And "Front Porch Stories" just further proves that's exactly what Avail is musically, complete cohesion.

Avail epitomizes the south when it comes to punk rock....if your not from the south or havent lived there you just dont get it......

    My Score:

Annoying or not, Beau-Beau, "the cheerleader", the mullet-sporting redneck, is married to one of the hottest girls in punk.

I still don't know how these things happen.

    My Score:

Lawrence arms and propagandhi are good as well, fat's not really all that bad when you actually look at their bands. they've gotten a lot better.

    My Score:

I knew these guys still had it. Although they peaked with Over the James, this is a damn fine album. There's really no band out there that i can compare them to. Avail rules and along with Dillinger Four and Soia they are keeping fat from being a completely worthless label.

You're too kind. I'm just so familiar with Avail that I forgot that some people may need more description. My review blew.

    My Score:

Avail is my favorite band of all time. Great songs, great lyrics. This is in their top 3 for sure (I like "Dixie" and "Over the James" as 1 and 2). You must see these guys live to get the full feel of Avail. Going to see them in Chicago in a couple weeks and I can't wait. They're down to Earth too. They'll talk to ya and stuff and don't act like they're better than you. Don't let the fact that this is on Fat fool you because they sound nothing like most Fat bands.

I'm still waiting for an Avail/Sick of it All tour. That would be by far one of the best tours of our time.

I saw these guys live a few years ago, the "cheerleader" was fucking annoying (and a redneck) as hell, he was sporting a full blown mullet...but hey they're a decent band so that makes up for it (and it takes balls to rock a mullet these days)

Not their best, but a solid outing...Maybe their weakest yet, but still head and should ers above most of the other shite out there...

    My Score:

I not too familiar with Avail, but if they are similiar to Strike Anywhere and Good Riddance, I'll definitely give it a whirl. Are they any way comparable to the band ANTiSEEN.

    My Score:

If I was to compare Avail to anyone it would be Strike Anywhere or Good Riddance. Kind of that melodic hardcore with meaningful lyircs. Great band. -SideLinedForLife

    My Score:

    Beau is the band's cheerleader...

Its kinda an old joke, but Beau is really cool. He's a bouncer at this bar we go to in Richmond (Sticky Rice), and he's funny as shit.

Beau basically gets the crowd pumped with crazy dancing, and often does backing vocals. He also has the most bomb collection of shoes ever. And he can often been seen crusing around Richmond on one of those electric scooters.

"Could somebody tell me what that guy Beau does? I like all the odd Avail songs I have but have yet to buy an album so I'm not overly familiar with the band. I do have "The Show Volume I" video where they interview him and show some live footage, and while he seems cool, the only thing I can discern that he does is run around and concentrate on growing huge goatees."

he made a funny hat out of plastic cups this one time. and then he ate a bunch of my friend's pizza another time. other than that, he does a little singing and dancing around. he's a pretty nice guy.

    My Score:

to the anonymous poster asking about who avail would be compared to, well I always see them mentioned along with Hot Water Music(Forever and Counting-No Division era). I'd also go on a limb to say they have some similarities to Pegboy, Leatherface, and Fuel(not the radio-rock one, the old 'Frisco punk band!). They've also indirectly inspired bands like Trial By Fire. Get into it yo..

I understand what the guy was saying about owning 1 or 2 albums being enough. an Avail CD is something you either like or you dont, really. Unless you really get into it, all the songs (and I know they are of VERY different styles) start to blend together.

That being said, go fucking see this band. Easily in the top 5 live bands ever. If you dont know whether or not to buy this cd, get it just to support them enough that they wont stop touring ever.

I'm contemplating whether or not to get this one. I already have a couple Avail albums and they're one of those bands where if you own two or three of their albums, you're set. It almost feels like overkill to get any more of their albums. Still a good band though. I'm seeing them in about three weeks.

I love this record. I still haven't listened to it enough to rank it among 4am Friday and Dixie. However, I think some people rag on One Wrench, which after a few listens is not a bad album at all. Anyways, "Front porch stories" is worth the wait.
