I can assume that most of you know who NOFX is, love them or hate them. For me, they were one of the first punk bands that I liked. They helped get me away from the KROQ crap that I used to listen to and on to things that were much better. When I bought this, it was like a light turning on. It made music fun again, at least at the time. Since then, my musical tastes have changed and I listen to different things. Yet somehow, this album still seems to find it’s way into my CD player every now and again. This release is probably one of the best albums NOFX has released, but I don’t think it’s one of the punk albums ever.

This album is good because it avoids what I think is one of the downfalls of the most recent NOFX album and that is getting overly political. Musically, the album is very sound and has good instrumentation. The songs on this record are well written and have lyrics that talk about life and taking humorous slants on topics such as stereotyping and hippie punks. Songs like Linoleum and The Brews describe Fat Mike’s ideal way of life and make light hearted jabs at being Jewish. The album has a good flow to it and features many memorable songs, such as Reeko, Don’t Call me White, and Perfect Government (wasn‘t Mark Curry the guy on Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper?). Good? Yes, but not perfect.

One of the problems I have with this album is that there are memorable songs, but there are also forgettable songs as well that I find myself consistently skipping over. Songs like My heart is yearning and The Happy Guy just don’t do anything for me. After a while, these songs also fall in to the trap of being NOFX songs and can feel repetitive.

Here is a quote from NOFX’s most recent album, The War on Errorism When did punk rock become so safe, I know it wasn’t Duane or Fletcher, who put up the barricades.

You’re right Fat Mike, it wasn’t either of them. It was you. This album got a lot of people into the punk scene and made it more accessible and far reaching than it was before. This album is an inspiration for many of today’s punk bands and for good reason. At the time, it was outstanding and it still is, to a point. But I just don’t think it holds up as well as it used to.

Whatever genere you want to say this is, it's one of NoFx's better ones I'd say (after white trash)...some good songs like linoleum and happy guy has a good point to it if you listen to the lyrics...

"I personally think this is one of the best punk albums of all time so I going to be biased.
But your point about how it was Fat Mike who put up all these barricades, I think it's a tad harsh to give him the blame. Offspring sold 10 million of Smash and Rancid sold loads of Let's Go in the same year, and that's not even thinking about Green Day. Surely they were and still are more popular than NOFX and would be first up against the wall when the elitist revolution comes?"

dUDE YOU FUCKIN RULE! RIGHT ON. I NEVER HEARD MTV ON THE RADIO, SAW 'EM ON MTV, OR HEARD ABOUT IT FROM CARSON DALY. I STILL HAVE THIS RECORD! WHY? IT'S FUCKING GOOD! EAT A BAG OF DICKS. THIS REVIEWER KNOWS NOTHING AND SHOULD CHOKE ON HIS SHIT AND DIE. NOFX LETS PEOPLE FIND THEIR MUSIC. IT MAY BE "IMMATURE" BUT YOU'RE STILL LISTENING TO IT. To the asshole who wrote: I wonder if any of the losers in this band have ever looked in the mirror....and thought to themselves: "what the hell have I done with my life? Im 40 years old with pink hair and I dress like a 13 year old. Thats a coincedence because no one over the age of 13 respects me."

Anyone who DOESNT respect these guys musically, clearly does not play nor know anything about writing music, as this band is easily one of the most musically talented "punk" bands. Besides, most 13 year olds nowadays listen to "screamo" (I like to moan and whine, someone please slit my throat cuz my middle class suburban life is so horrible) bullshit. Being 22 now, this album (along with Nirvana and all the other shit of the time) belongs to the generation who were teenagers in the early 90's. And the 13 year olds who are listening to it now are making a wise choice over all this emo shit.

To be honest, nothing of any importance ever gets to the public. It's all preaching to the converted. The first few bands around, I love it (Crass, Discharge, etc.), but there comes a time when it's just crap... I already know about most of the stuff bands preach about, as does most of their audience... Some LEGIT band needs to get hugely popular and just destroy this new wave of feel good music... Punk's been safe for twenty years.

yeah..I'm oblivious...whatever...NOFX has been a integral part of the scene. Sure Fat Mike may have some views that people dont agree with and sure some of the songs arent really serious...but you know sometimes you gotta laugh at all the shit that goes on in this world. Its a fucked up place and a little bit of sattire and humor never hurt anything.I'm just sick and fucking tired of hearing people bash this band. Fat Mike has run the band and the label with a DIY ethic...they have never sold out. The fact that they've become so big is testament to how good they really are...getting big without any mainstream radio airplay or videos on mtv... this album even went gold...And thanks to fat we've been introduced to a bunch of awesome bands, Strung Out, Lagwagon, Snuff...just to name a few...id even be willing to bet that you punker than thou fucks were probably turned on to punk by these guys and are for some stupid reason too ashamed to admit it..you suddenly became too punk rock for you're own good...I always thought punk was about conveying a message..and sure nofx doesnt always convey it seriously, but you have to give them credit, whether you agree with them or not...it seems like they've been supporting causes more actively and publicly. The PETA comp, punkvoter.com, the rock against bush tour and compilation...I've even started to see interviews in magazines. Nofx is at least doing something and getting their message out there...Maybe i'm oblivious...but I know when to give credit where credit is due..and Nofx deserves a lot of it.

good, I thought this was the begining of the end for NOFX. I'd call "Ribbed" and "White Trash" their best, probably the two albums by these guys i can listen to through and through. With "Punk in Drublic" they started to put together some very forgetable songs, uninteresting lyrically and musically. They bland-ass Ryan Greene production also does them no favors either (Donnell Cameron's White Trash sounds eons better). They've had a few bright spots here and there since .. the Decline comes to mind...

to answer the Mark Curry Question..this is from the Nofx website in the Q & A section.

The lyrics to "Perfect Government" are some of the best I've ever read. I was wondering who Mark Curry is and what his relationship with the band is?

Mark Curry is my step brother. He and I were in our first band together. He signed a solo deal with Virgin and I hooked up with NOFX. -EL HEFE

This is the guy from Me First and the Gimme Gimmes side-project right?

I thought thier new cd was called "The War on Errorism." I've never heard of this album before, but it's probably not as good as "Heavy Petting Zoo."

the first NOFX cd that I heard was White trash.... one of my friends got it when it first came out...I liked it, it was funny...but didnt really understand what I was hearing..I didnt really know about "punk"..I was only 12 and i had grown up pretty sheltered in a christian school...fast forward to '94...Green Day drops dookie...I win a copy from some radio station...I listen to it and I'm blown away...I wanted more...so I went to the local record store and I saw this gem sitting on the new release shelf..I remembered the name and was like..they had that funny song about bob, So I picked it up and a whole new world was opened up to me...This was one of those albums that changed my life...

this is a pretty good cd, it suffers from the classic nofx flaw of making you want to skip tracks, but not as much as many of the other cds... certainly a classic

haha i hate it when people correct grammar unless its truly awful, but i couldn't help but chuckle at the statement that this album
"isn't one of the punk albums ever"

i knew what you meant, and you might have even left it like that BECAUSE we knew what you meant, but its a good album anyways so the end

This CD is probably the most inflencial CDs of my life. It roped me in when I was in 6th grade; I know all the songs on it so well. I still play it, even though I never listen to "punk" anymore.

this is not one of the best punk albums ever, but it is one of the big classics. this did get most of the kids that are into punk now, i know it got me. however, i have never considered offspring or green day as punk bands. i just though of them as just some more bands for alternative radio. even when i was 12. nofx was a breakaway from that for me.

Mark Curry was the guy from "Hangin With Mr. Cooper" and he was on "Don't Forget Your Toothbrush." I can't help but think it was a different Mark Curry that wrote Perfect Government

Pretty goodish record... Not that great, but fun enough. Has a few really good songs, the rest are what would be recognized now as standard pop-punk...

I'm not a NOFX fan myself, I actually despise much of their music (including parts of this album), but I do recognize how much NOFX has contributed to a community worldwide. And yeah, it's not like this stuff is salvation by audio or anything, but as the reviewer points out, this album probably turned a lot of people onto interesting and alternative music, which I would say is a good thing.

my 3rd least favorite nofx disc. coming in 1st and 2nd are s&m airlines and maximum rock and roll.

white trash or heavy petting zoo are my favorites.

the longest line not too far behind. short, but sweet.

def one of the best punk albums ever, for the simple fact that it got so many people, just like our reviewer, into punk rock when it came out. Just like dookie by green day, its def a classic. Look at how many fucking kids got into punk through green day, probally a lot wouldnt admit it, but we all know that its true. Not to mention this album is just pure unadulturated good fucking music from start to finish.
