Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

After a long-winded hangover of stylistic experimentation (the somewhat-slower yet poppier Covered with Ants and the pathetic, toned-down comedic album that is Gusto), I am pleased to say that Guttermouth returns to their goofier but somewhat-harder punk roots with Eat Your Face.

Even though Guttermouth plays little more than average Exploited-inspired punk, it is the band's quirky sense of humor and Mark Adkin's comical singing that sets the band apart from other punk-satire-party-crap-shit-bands. In terms of punk and satire, Guttermouth is more random and grosser than Blink 182, less musically talented than Tenacious D, less shock value than the Dwarves and yet more attuned to Weird Al Yankovic than Tenacious D.

Songs such as "My Neighbor's Baby," "Wasted Lives," "Octopus Hairpiece," and "Hot Dog to the Head" demonstrate a completely stupid, callow, depraved sense of humor. "Octopus Hairpiece" recounts a pathetic tale of losing your hairpiece at sea and one's didactic inner struggle with the throes of male-pattern baldness. "My Neighbor's Baby" contemplates Mark's disdain over a crying baby and a desire to suffocate it (or leave it in a dumpster). "Wasted Lives" has Mark slandering his fellow bandmates ("Ty and his sister are newlyweds," "Scott sits down when he has to pee") while shamelessly ripping off the Ramones' "Teenage Lobotomy."

That's not to say that Guttermouth doesn't show a serious side: "Ticket to Quebec," perhaps Guttermouth's fastest song yet, has Mark hurriedly screaming and mocking the excesses of American military might--and riffing a short Slayer-style solo in the middle. "Surf's Up Asshole" plays upon the subject of surf turfdom (aka the general frustration of outsiders descending upon Huntington Beach and crowding out the surf spots) with a saucy retort: "You all read it in some surf fagazine, so you all wind up in H.B." And finally "Party of Two" lightly comments upon the general inanity of the American two-party political system.

Whereas Guttermouth musically continues to stagnate, the band's sense of humor and satire is renewed again, to the days of "Musical Monkey" and "Friendly People." Their songs do not drone upon a singular theme (i.e. heartbreak about girls)--and they do not need to be entirely political to be stimulating.

Ultimately, Guttermouth exists to annoy people: to poke at mankind's pre-occupation with personal hygiene, to scourge the punk scene with inane, random bursts of cartoonish satire and to do everything they do comfortably (and inevitably, half-assed). Their music simply pulses to keep accurate time of it all.

this had to be the lamest "trying to be funny" comment i have ever read on this site. especially the parts where "other guys" are quoted then you tell them to "shoosh" as if you didnt just type those comments, but instead i was actually hearing guys in the background yelling. geeze. i wonder if you actually use the word "mum" in real life, or thought it would just be funnier. cause it wasnt. it seemed really awkward like you were trying really hard. i hope you and your 14 friends fulfilled all your homoerotic fantasies. lets see, there could have been one dude at the ass, vagina mouth and two gettin stroked...lets say two in vag...that leaves 9 dudes naked and jacking off to other dudes cocks and asses...hmm...which were you?

Never mind the score i gave or what the hell i think of this alblum. What kind of fuckin punks are you? I'm reading all of your comments and most of them are just bitchin to each other or making lists of bands to retire that include Bad Religion, The Misfits, Anti-Flag, The Vandals, Alkaline Trio, and NOFX. It doesn't matter really what you think of these bands but more of what they are and how they are inspiring young people today to take a stand, make a change, and not just be satisfied with the way things are whether it be a conservative(Misfits) or liberal(most other punk bands) stance on issues. They're keeping punk from dying off all together. Anyways, why don't you all do something productive, make a change for the better in this world, or write something somebody else might want to read. Okay, I'm done ranting.

oh yeah, my mom is pretty fat and in her sixties, she is in no way a milf. i'm not sure if my parents still have sex, actually not sure if anyone would want to have sex with either of my parents. so if you were willing to satisfy her for once so my dad wouldnt have to deal with that homely overweight mom of mine, i'm sure he's kinda glad.

    My Score:

Then the Exploited? Really, I'm pretty ignorant about this major label stuff, but if they don't suck I'll admit I like it.

I thought the cover was an intelligent blow at the whole Dis-beat crust crowd, I just don't know what the hell they sound like and my Soulseek is broken. Cry me a river, or buy me a Bright Eyes album!

I thought the cover art looked familiar but didn't make the discharge connection until now!!! No, they don't sound like black flag, not really like nofx either but definately more in the vein of nofx then blak flag!

Oh yeah, I also have no idea what these guys sound like. Some people said it sounds like really early Black Flag and some people said it sounds like NOFX. So what is it?

Pretty good, but I bought the new lars record, the only crime album and this and listened to this last, it just kind of paled in comparison to today's other new albums!

this score is for the use of the word "didactic" in the review.

    Excellent return for these guys!

And the one part on "The Next Faux Moheekon" sounds like the Scooby Doo theme! haha!

gusto's lyrics weren't bad, but the album itself was just completely out of form for guttermouth, and they weren't the band to do it.

this album is a return to their old style, and it suits them much better. if you liked their old stuff, you will like this just as much.

So I watch these guys at Warped this past weekend in Portland. They played 5 songs, and Mark told everyone to "fuck off you pathetic assholes!!! I'm just here to take your money!!!" Mark tried to have sex with a girl on stage, while she flashed him and everyone covered him, not in ants, but in lugies. After the 5 songs, he told everyone to go fuck them selves then had some other local band come on to fill there time slot while they sat on the side of the stage and drank beer, laughed and flipped off the crowed. Classic asshole Guttermouth, beer, boobs, spit, middle fingers, and even though many people were pissed I found it one of the coolest things I've ever seen them do.

    this album is great.

everyone who talks shit about gusto is clueless (including the members of guttermouth who only bash it cause all the fans did)

    gusto was genious.

lemon water has some of the best lyrics of all time.

its nice that they are faster again, but gusto was great too.

these guys always put out great albums

i like to put spaces between my sentances

    Fucking awesome album.
    Their best since "Musical Monkey".

Though whoever said they sound like Strike Anywhere now is a fucking moron, and was basing that off of one song, which still doesn't sound like Strike Anywhere.

Anyway, this shit is better than 99% of the crap you listen to, and call "punk".

This band is the shit because after reading the notes in Live At The Pharmacy I found out that before making these CDs they've usually done a large quantity of drugs, and wind up writing all the songs in about 10 minutes. Any band that can do that and still sound good is awesome in my book.

N.B.: I apologize for the various typos:

It should be "Karen and her sister are newlyweds" and I think I may used the wrong band member's name for "Scott sits down when he has to pee."
