When many people hear of a band on A-F Records, they think “Well, this isn’t worth it, because they sound like Anti-Flag.” But there are two bands on A-F that are deserving of your attention: Much the Same and the Code. In 2002 (these guys have matured a lot) these guys sounded like a more intense and pit-friendly version of the Suicide Machines. The only influence that can be seen from Anti-Flag is a passion for activism and social change. This album isn’t too brilliant, but I have listened to their newer stuff and can’t wait for the next Code full-length.

What makes the band so much different from any other band in the scene right now is their down to earth attitude. My friend went to Warped `04 in Cincinnati and ended up spending the entire day chatting it up with vocalist Marc Defiant and drummer Seth. They didn’t act like stupid rock stars (cough, cough M. Shadows cough) or someone who doesn’t care (lead singer of Bullets and Octane cough). Even cooler, that same friend saw them with the Suicide Machines and Big D and the Kids Table and they all remembered him!!! Most people wouldn’t give a shit, but like I said, the Code are different.

The music isn’t very good, but the Code’s DIY roots are what makes them a special band. I would say on this album they sound like they are still developing their sound, but on their past two releases, The Rhetoric of Reason EP and their split with Whatever It Takes, they have definitely showed promise.

Songs like “John Doe,” “Riot,” and “Seal of Approval” really make this album one that I continually listen to because of the catchy ska mixed in with those raw East Coast gutter punk chords. If you want a taste of what’s to come from the Code I suggest the newer stuff, but if you like them a lot then I suggest checking them out live (they kick ass) and then give Alert Aware Involved a spin.

Oh, and Kevin Lyman: More bands like this on Warped `06…just sayin’…please!!!!

well, it's obvious the person below me is an idiot, by being sponsored by all those "corporate interests!" the bands get to spread their message to thousands of people, same goes for the record pressing etc. so they're actually using the "corporate iterests" to work against them. say it isn't brilliant. it's like with anti-flag, they signed to a major so their voice could be heard by more people and the quality of the music doesn't have to suffer aswell.

...And I don't like ska-punk anymore. It all sounds too similar to me.

You know what? I am a poser. But it's not my fault that I wasn't born in 1970, or whatever. i'm a poser simply be being on this site. LOOK AT THE ADVERTISING. We're all part of THEIR game. I"m a part, you're a part, and so is anyone who participates in VAN's warped tour, sponsored by SONY and SAMSUNG and AOL, and CIRCUIT CITY. Who do you think wants you to buy this album? The corporate interests. It's inescapeable. For EVERY CD manufactured, a perecentage goes to the company that patented the technology (Philips?). I'm proably an even bigger part of this charade than most of you: I recognize it, but do NOTHING! If I buy an album with subversive ideas, society just accepts them. If you're an "anarchist", people ignore you, unless you live in squats and dumpster-dive and steal, in which case you either die or are put in prison. All of this is an illusion, of almost matrix-ish proportions (just not as poorly acted or written). Oh, and all the classic albums I review I've gotten very recently, simply because I couldn't have gotten them before I was born.

Wait, you're saying that the dub version of The Pace sounded like a Leftover Crack song? That just may be the most preposterous thing I've ever heard in my entire life.

    My Score:

I thought this album was okay for political hardcore music. It's as far as I'd like to venture into the bland, yell-a-long chorus hardcore sound though. I must have missed all the "catchy ska", and the "east coast gutter punx chords", whatever the fuck that is.

Rhetoric of Reason was forgettable. Django's working of the one song was okay...even if it sounded like a Leftover Crock song. And it also had the absolute worst, to date, cover of Unity on it.

I know that's really unfortunate...intro5pect is one of the better live bands I've seen.

    Everyone forgets Intro5pect.

"Oh boy! Warped-Tour-Hardcore! Another one for the Casualties and Unseen fans!"

Feeding5000 you are such a poser it pains me

why don't you go write another shitty review of a classic album you heard about three days ago.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 28, 2005 at 1:06 AM (EST)

NMDS were the best thing on AF, now they're on jade tree. sucks for AF, good for NMDS. I can't wait for their new record.

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 28, 2005 at 12:35 AM (EST)

No, they're not even close to the same. The Code only have like 5 ska songs anyway. The guitar and bass playing is nowhere near the same style, the vocals don't sound the same, that leaves what? They're both ska punk bands? Similar drumming styles?

Posted by notfeelingcreative on 2005-11-27 23:02:16

"if you compare this band to the Suicide Machines you either don't listen to much music or are just a dumbass."

Badsic cookie-cutter ska punk not nearl as good as the suicide machines but the same exact formula!

"Every postitive A-F review starts that way, and I just don't get it."

Unfortunately the majority of people out there don't even bother checking out the bands on A-F because of the ASSUMPTION that it will sound like Anti-Flag.

Of course the other sad thing is that people don't even bother checking out the newer, better, more musicially interesting Anti-Flag album (or albums if you include the upcoming RCA debut) because they didn't like or grew out of A New Kind of Army.

And reviewer, you're right, Much The Same kicks.

agreed, many bands on A-F sound nothing like Anti-Flag. and this was a pretty lame review mostly because the reviewer can barely write. The Code are alright, but unfortunately the only time i've seen them, their vocalist's voice was pretty much shot. that happens when you tour and sing in the style he does.

saying that they are unlike any other band because they are "down to earth" is also a sad and stupid generalization...in fact, i've talked to many band members who will just hang out and talk with you for awhile as long as you aren't a jackass.

I actually really like this album. I was unfamiliar with them when they did that tour with the Suicide Machines and AAA a few years ago and they blew me away. I bought this right away and didn't regret it. I want a new album.

i didnt think the lead singer of bullets and octane was like that in any way, my band played with them in allentown and we were hanging out and talking with all of them all night.

    My Score:

the bands like nmds are off af so i didn't really count them in this review...

    My Score:

Pretty good album. Has a few really good songs...I would say it ranks somewhere after NMDS, the Unseen (old stuff) and Intro5pect as one of the better A-F cds.

    My Score:

i love this cd... i've seen the code several times and i'd say they're probally one of my favorite bands... only thing that keeps me from giving this a 10 is after listening to it hundreds of times, it gets kinda old... but it is still a great release imo and probally one of the best bands out of PA around...

can't comment on their records but i saw these guys about 5 years ago and they were pretty good live.

Genereic anti-flag influenced political lyrics over suicide machinesesque punk-ska, nothing new at all, but I like it.

Every postitive A-F review starts that way, and I just don't get it. Virus Nine, Pipedown, The Code, Whatever It takes, The Vacancy, New Mexican Disaster Squad, all different from one another and don't really sound like Anti-Flag. The only records they've put out that sound remotely like them are Endless Struggle and The unseen.

This and most of the albums A-F have put out have been good.

Why does everyone keep comparing them to the Suicide Machines? If I'm gonna compare them to anyone it's Against All Authority. Decent album, better than you made it seem for sure.

i really like them, but this album sounds like the suicide machines, so i think its greatness is overshadowed by the lack of originality...

Posted by MrStabone on 2005-11-27 06:08:04

i have no records by this band, so i can't comment on how they sound recorded.

but i have seen them live and hung out with a couple of the dudes. live, they are super energetic and really give the crowd their moneys worth.

they play a style of punk/ska that has gone by the wayside, which i think takes some balls

they are a good band - even though they wear those stretchy black pants - and they were nice enough to let me grab at them and see how they really work. it's almost like spandex. i am considering getting a pair for myself, but they are gonna have to be modified to accomodate my massive package.

well, i like 'em. sort of a poor man's suicide machines.
