Any review of NOFX will mention at least one of these two facts:

  1. The band has been around since 1983.
  2. They have always sounded like NOFX. They did then and they do now.
That said, NOFX's last album, the controversial War on Errororism divided opinions not because of the musical content, but because the band shed their (undeserved) apolitical reputation to strike a blow for the oft-ignored centrist America. Even though the band was branded as extreme liberal agitators, very little about Errorism was on the hard left and this of course led the more staunchly leftist bands taking their own shots at the band as well.

So while taking it from both sides, the band pushed forward with their agenda to push for a reasonable America and were chastised in the press for it. This despite the fact that the band was never apolitical; the band's perfect EP, The Decline clearly demonstrated political leanings, as did their choice to cover “Perfect Government” during the Clinton era and “Kill All the White Men,” which raised hackles as recently as last year for its ironic content.

With Wolves, the second album from the “political” NOFX, the band has narrowed its focus substantially to the point where it would be reasonable to describe one dominant theme: the disastrous consequence of giving governance to the most extreme of religious people. You know who I'm talking about; the people who can't seem to keep their noses out of anyone's business, whether it's what people do in the privacy of their homes, or how they chose to live, or how they chose to amuse themselves.

The wonderful “Leaving Jesusland” should become a rallying call for all moderate people sick of that attitude, the people -- atheist, Jewish, Christian or otherwise -- who want to see a rational thought enter the discourse again. “USA-holes” is as catchy as it is correct, and the deathly serious and speedy “You Will Lose Faith” asks how much faith is built on a house of cards.

Of course, this is still NOFX, so the band also manages to spend some time with the staples: the general apathy of “60%, ” the pothead ramblings of “Instant Crassic” or the Adolescents tribute of “One Celled Creature.” The album's single, “Seeing Double at the Triple Rock” is both a shoutout to the venue owned by a member of Dillinger Four and an ode to getting completely shitfaced.

Despite an abundance of reliably strong contributions, like ”Leaving Jesusland“ and ”Seeing Double at the Triple Rock,“ the album suffers from one main problem; the album lacks any cohesiveness. Tracks like ”Cantano en Espanol“ just don't fit between ”Wolves“ and ”100 Times Fuckeder." This isn't the seemingly random style jumping of Two Heebs, which despite its mix of pop-punk, hardcore, jazz and ska managed to sound complete. Rather, it almost sounds like the band selected random tracks from their 7-inch sessions to record. As a result, despite being written by one songwriter, the music seems hastily assembled.

As always, NOFX delivers a plurality of strong material; 23 years later, the band is still going strong and is certainly one of the most reliable punk bands around, both live and on record. Within their catalog, this album isn't the strongest (that'd be a three-way tie between Punk in Drublic, The Decline and So Long...) but it isn't the weakest (Liberal Animation); simply, a solid entry. It's not a classic, but it's classic NOFX.

In my personal opinion, this is NOFX's best album. Although I do like NOFX, I have always found that I skip a lot of songs on their albums.
But I can easily listen to Wolves, and enjoy it, all the way through.

This is a fuckin'good NOFX LP. The best one since PID. "Doornails" is probably one of the most sad punk song I've ever heard. NOFX did much shitty songs for the last 5 years that this record is a big surprise for me. 3 month after its release I still listen to it every day (i listened to the previous one only twice before deleting it from my MP3 player think).

I like this album. No, it's not another Punk in Drublic or So Long..., but it's a lot better than, say, Errorism, and I actually think it flows a lot better than White Trash which, while blessed with some REALLY good tracks (The first three songs, "Liza and Louise," "Please Play This Song on the Radio"), just seemed to consist of a lot of filler. But oh well.

And damn, I love "The Man I Killed."

I am honestly confused as to how someone who claims to be a fan of NOFX would not like this album, this is the band at thier finest, and in a very short time I have come to realize the Wolves in Wolves clothing is right up there with this band's most revered records.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 at 8:38 AM (EDT)

This is the best records so far this year in my opinion. People just cant handle its greatness. Thats why they hate on it. One day you will all appreciate what this band is doing and has done. For now you should concentrate on graduating High School and forming your own opinions. Have a lovely day.

--"once celled creature" is most definitely about chris hannah. this is something that a poster on the g7 blog said about this:

"Propagandhi’s jabs at NOFX raise valid points, whereas Fat Mike making fun of a goofy, tongue-in-cheek photo is just kind of weird and stupid. Sort of like reviewing “This Is Spinal Tap” and writing a long essay critiquing the band’s dumb lyrics."--

I would have to disagree on this one because in my opinion the NOFX song doesn't make fun of the photo, but uses it as a reference to Propaghandi and makes a statement about leading by showing something positive instead of somethiing negative.
Anyway, I think most people can see both sides of a story so whatever, I don't think to much of the whole discussion. To me it's mainly just a good song and a good record wich has at least some lyrical depth on it. Musically I think there are a few songs that maybe shouldn't be on there but I hardly know of any records that are flawless from start to finish.

i don't really think drublic was their best, though linoleum is probably my favorite song aside from the decline.

personally i think nofx albums tend to get a little bit better each time. well, maybe if you throw pump up the valuum out of the picture. but i don't think any nofx record is as catchy as this one.

why does everybody slag "leaving jesusland"? i thought it was catchy and funny, but hey, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, its just that no1s really reasoned why they dont like that song. (unless i missed something...)

also, maximum rock n roll and liberal animation aren't that bad, straight off the top of my head, having not listened to them for ages, i can name shut up already, beer bong, shitting bricks, and six pack girls as great songs!

Not bad for NOFX. I like this album because it has variety and that is the flavor of life. the album starts of with a dumb acoustic song called 60%. But then after that it goes into the fast and political track USA-holes. Then goes into the more funny :) seing double at the triple rock which is one of the best songs on the album, it was also on the never trust a hippie ep, just like the song the marxist broethers. then comes the song we march to the beat of a diffrent drum which is good but it has some slow parts but they all go together. then comes the marxist brothers which is nothing special has some funny lines but i dont really like it. Then comes a sighn of relief a good fast song that is under 1min and 30 sec. long. it is just like old NOFX. the lyrics are odd but still good the music goes from speedy acoustic to speddy eletric guitar. then comes another classic style song which is one of my favirote on the album it is called benny got blown up it is fast but not sloppy it is great. next comes the funniest and best song on the album LEAVING JESUS LAND. It has some really great lyrics because it is funny to hear a fat guy like mike make fun of fat people it is like reading a Dr. Phil book. Plus the song is good length and is really up beat and fun Well next comes the awesome and diffrent up beat short and melodic treat getting high on the down low another fast song but it has a real cool groove to it and I would not mind a few more songs like it. The next song is good to it is called cruel and unusual punnishment. it is a fun ska vibed song which turns into fast punk then goes back to the ska vibe it has some good lyrics and is another one of those songs you have fun well hearing. after that come the two worst songs wolves in wolves clothing and the lame ass waste of time cantado en Espenol. after that there is the song 100 times f@kder wich has a sick drum intro and has a cool guitar piece and i love the duel vox between fat mike and mel. Then comes the 30 second instant crassic it is cool they should have made it longer becasue it is really pretty good. Then comes you will lose faith is is a fast kind of classic style song but it is a little long and the guitar solo is more rock&roll than punk because it slows down but none the less it is mostly fast nofx with a cool solo and thought pervoking lyrics. next is the stupid one celled creature just skip it. next is the goofy acoustic song doornails it is cool the jokes get old but not bad. Now were on the last song 60% reprise it is cool more medicore kind of like old green day speed and the lyrics are kind of cool to it just talks about they love having fun making music and how they have there own label the truly are the coolest bastards of diy. have a great day and pick up this cd

I think you're confusing the blanket-term "liberal" with the modern democratic ideology of "liberalism". I consider myself a liberal, but I am not a supporter of contemporary party politics.

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 1:17 PM (EDT)

You silly cunts, liberal does not mean left-wing. I am left-wing and i hate liberals. From the Wikipedia article:

Broadly speaking, liberalism seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on government power, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, and a market economy that supports private enterprise.

Read that last part again. Then read some Suhumans and Dead Kennedys lyrics and tell me they are liberal.

well....that g7 poster proves single celled creature is about hannah.

but its fucking stupid: how the hell is propagandhi saying: "let me powerpoint your balance sheet" any more valid than nofx saying "In order to lead by example you have to show a path to a better world"...

going back to the whole punkvoter thing...at least fat mike was doing something to try and make a difference the best way he saw possible. chris obviously didn't agree with that but instead of doing something himself, he just bitched about the efforts of Fat Mike (the whole George Soros thing). So fuck him. in fact, i think NOFX's criticism is much more valid than propagandhi's (wow....fat wreck chords makes money. they also give the best royalty rates out of any label and treat their bands fairly.)

"I really hope the Subhumans are not liberal. Dead Kennedys maybe (now, not then). The Sex Pistols were apolitical."

What the fuck are you smoking?! The Subhumans were definately liberal...er as "liberal" as a Brit can be. The Dead Kennedys entire discography is based on politics. And the Sex Pistols...God Save the Queen and Anarchy in the UK...maybe not completely liberal, but showing a dislike for standard democracy and a questioning of the government. A call out against what was wrong in England. COME ON! Punk has ALWAYS been political and has ALWAYS leaned to the left. Go listen to From the Cradle to the Grave by the Subhumans to get a sense of their political leanings and "liberal" views. As for the Dead Kennedys...We've Got An Even Bigger Problem Know...at least I think that's what it's called. The songs of listed are the most blatant displays of the bands political ideology, but almost all of the Subhumans, Dead Kennedys, and, to a lesser extent the Sex Pistols, have some political sensibility to them. Don't talk about punk if you don't know about punk. Period.

    fuckyouoioioi,

ofcourse its possible to say "one celled creature" is about chris..

besides the fact that i'm saying it, which proves its possible....

there are many tips to make one believe this is so..

there are plenty of signals that make me think its about him and since i just got outta class for the day i think i'll do it::::

Life on a mattress in a robe,
in a room full of emptiness

[refering to the picture of "glen lambert" aka chris hannah in the booklet of potemkin city limits]

Knowledge has much better uses than self-pitty and superiority

[this , in the least, is commentary on chris/glen's outlook that he portrays in pictures, interviews, lyrics]

Maybe you are or could be the next Hoffman, Mahatma, or Chomsky
But no one will ever know
A sum of your parts are not gonna change any hearts
not with hate in your eyes

["a sum of your parts" might seem familiar.. this to me is another blatant signal that it could be about chris.. propagandhi's song anti-manifesto has the line "A sum of our parts and I've never laughed harder...a song in our hearts and ive never laughed harder..."
play on the idea of a actual creature with one cell]

In order to lead by example you have to show a path to a better world,
    not a cell"

I am not offering this as the black and white answer..
you can read in to it however u want.. this is just how it makes sense to me

since humans usually try to make sense out of what they encounter , this is merely what im doing...

you agreed with my opinion of 'the man i killed" ... that seems like even more of a stretch in my mind..
do u just really hate the fact that someone is talking shit about the guy (chris) who likes to talk shit about everyong and everything else?

if so.. i know how u feel

but, i'm not so sure about the one-celled creature thing. sure that was the first thing that popped into my mind, but nofx knows more people than we know about and writes deragotory songs about them on pretty much every album (see: "cheese/wheres my slice", "day to daze", "bob", "happy guy", "jeff wears birkenstocks" (although i know who that one is about), etc. etc. etc.

so i don't think its possible to say that song is about chris. if we did, we'd be two victims of the black and white...

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 6:47 AM (EDT)

about the one celled creature thing...if you see the world for what it really is, how could you NOT have a depressed view for the future?
this record's pretty good, i don't see why a bunch dislike it. it reminds me of Screeching Weasel's Teen Punks in Heat. a ladder release, simple music, awesome lyrics, flowing production, great fuckin' record.

I really hope the Subhumans are not liberal. Dead Kennedys maybe (now, not then). The Sex Pistols were apolitical.

---I've only commented on here twice. i dont wanna take the time to create an account cuz i know i might get too wrapped up in most of this rediculous discussion about which album is better and all that lame shit----

    heres my name though: CYTHEREA

how bout this.... lets discuss what we think about the lyrics, like what we think they might be about.. let's try not to think in such black and white terms...cuz if u really pay attention you'd remember " too bad the world not work that way"..

i've already mentioned what i thought about "one celled creature"... it's about nofx's view of chris hannah (guitarist of propagandhi) and his slip into a more depressed view for the future.... at least thats what ive come to think about the song - no one else has offered a better answer besides it just being a joke-

secondly, what about the song "the man i killed"?
it's definitely a catchy song.. one that was released on their 7'' of the month club deal but was all folk acoustic...
after thinking about the lyrics i've come to think it's about a future assassination of the president....possibly Dubya..
the first thing that made me think this was his line about the man's "beady eyes". In nofx's older song "idiot son of an asshole" he says

    "beady eyes, and kinda dislexic..."

also, at the very end of "the man i killed" the lyrics say as the man is about to be killed for his act, a priest kneels down and basically tells him that the man-he-killed's replacement (Dick Chaney) planned the whole scenario... and what he did , didnt really matter in the end because think about it...Chaney is just as greedy, if not greedier

anyway thats another of my additions to the commentary of this album...

lets try to break this album down and see that theres more too it than it seems...

This album is boring all around. One might argue that they use the same formula on every album, and yeah, it usually works...but this time around it's just overkill. There's nothing new and exciting about this release.

Yeah, it's cool they have stuff to say, and most of the time, they are completely right, but if the music is gonna start to blow this much...why doesn't Fat Mike and crew just coin "NOFX: The Book"...and leave the music to rest.

I got this album. Probably should have thought more about the purchase as my musical tastes have matured slightly from when I thought errorism was a good effort. even though I will always defend nofx to the deth, I doubt I will listen to this often if at all. Story goes if you only got one or a couple of NOFX albums dont get this, if your in the 10 album fanatic catagory go buy another style of music diversify it doesnt mean you have to stop listening to NOFX.

I looooove the spanish song before "100 times fuckeder.".!! It compliments it soo well... ITs soo a la punk in drublic, the track before "how did the cat get so fat" . My favorite tune on wolves is "cruel and unusual punishment", I loove the guitar in it,soo good, could go down as one of the best melodies/riffs not only in punk but in rock n roll and all music of all time. Favorite track on the e.p is "golden boys", and favorite on the 7"inches is "jamaica's alright".

I don't shit on your musical opinions at all. You can prefer any album you want AND explain why you do to make it constructive or at least interesting. But I shit and puke on those (maybe not you at all) who insult each other crying out that everybody must like this album because it's good and the ones who like this other one are stupid because it sucks. It's like they want us to change our point, kinda "oh yeah you're finally right, I got no taste ! Insult me again and I'll adopt yours."
Maybe I shouldn't have been clearer. Sorry bout that.

wolves in wolves clothing. too middle of the road. it doesnt explore anything new, its really not that fun...its just vanilla flavor nofx. nothing to piss off or alienate old school fans, but nothing to keep them interested either. i'd rather just put on 'so long' which is the closest album theyve doen before to what I think this one is like. its ok. 'leaving jesusland' and 'seeing double' are pretty classic. but not 'bob' or 'linoleum' or hell, even 'dinosaurs must die' classic. I'm just kinda bored with it. nothings funny enough, nothings obnoxious enough...its just there. its pretty uninspired. and i'm sick of mike making such a big deal about how they're old now and blah blah the scene today sucks....he started doing that with 'seperation of church and skate' and now its even more blatant. hes getting too bogged down with yesterday. the scene, himself, even nofx.

i reposted just this part so that those of you, who like me, wont read a long rambling post but will make your own will at least read the part thats about the new album.

Cool and Unusual Punishment is the worst song on here easy.

it's the mattersville of this album

haha, dude, mattersille is like linoleum compared to cool and unusual punishment. that song falls into the category of...well nofx songs that go nowhere, and only the 10-15 or so of fat mikes friends actually 'get it'.

    My Score:

well i only get to do this every 2 years....

1.punk in drublic-most solid, so many classics, defined mid 90's 'skate punk', defined nofx, and made a bunch of 13-25 year old guys really like punk rock in its pureist sense...well, purest if you consider pure punk rock fast mid 90's skate punk. it has linoleum on it. therefore, their best album.

    2. the decline-yea its one song, yea its 18minutes, yea its not a full length, but its probably the best thing fat mike ever wrote, artistically, lyrically and musically. its everything nofx was, done at its best. fat mike at his peak as a songwriter.

3.pump up the valium-this album to me was just so fun, it is without a doubt the funnest nofx album that you can still sit through. its right on par with

4.so long-which is right on par with valium. why valium higher? cuz the second half of 'so long' is kinda weak by comparison. other than 'desperations gone' and 'quart in session' the second half kinda blows after the awesome first 7 songs, which is maybe the strongest section of any nfox album. but i love 'thank god its monday' and 'dinosaurs' so valium gets the nod.

5.white trash-its got bob, liza and louise, stickin in my eye, soul doubt...its really fuckin good. but vocally, musically..it just isnt what they were about to become, but its still damn good.

heres where the list starts to go down hill

6.war on errorism TIE heavy petting zoo. the two most misunderstood nofx albums. heavy petting zoo saw mike exploring new song styles and structures, and ended up with a mixed bag. amazing songs like 'freedom lika shopping cart' get bogged down with some garbagio like 'liza'. it wasnt very fun, and mike quickly rebounded with the fan pleasing and much more fun and classic 'so long'

errorism saw mike again exploring some new sounds and structures and his political leanings became much more blatant (franco unamerican, idiots are taking over, etc.). it was his call to arms against george bush, but it really had some solid moments and some fun ones too. anarchy camp is great.

    7. wolves in wolves clothing. too middle of the road. it doesnt explore anything new, its really not that fun...its just vanilla flavor nofx. nothing to piss off or alienate old school fans, but nothing to keep them interested either. i'd rather just put on 'so long' which is the closest album theyve doen before to what I think this one is like. its ok. 'leaving jesusland' and 'seeing double' are pretty classic. but not 'bob' or 'linoleum' or hell, even 'dinosaurs must die' classic. I'm just kinda bored with it. nothings funny enough, nothings obnoxious enough...its just there. its pretty uninspired. and i'm sick of mike making such a big deal about how they're old now and blah blah the scene today sucks....he started doing that with 'seperation of church and skate' and now its even more blatant. hes getting too bogged down with yesterday. the scene, himself, even nofx.

ribbed, s/m arilines, liberal animation. if you can still listen to any of these in sequence, without getting bored, tired, or annoyed, hey, kudos to you. you're probably that same guy who doesnt mind sitting through local acts. they are worth a laugh. but man...even 'moron brothers' is starting to sound pretty...pretty fuckin bad.

and if you want to count it as an album, '45 or 46 songs' is probably in the top 4. some of those outtakes and comp songs were some of the best they ever did.

    Paul.

oh well, at least its new nofx. who am i kidding. if they make another album, i'll buy it too. its nofx. come on now

Look back at every major punk band throughout history. The Sex Pistols, the Dead Kennedys, the Subhumans, etc etc. And NOFX has always leaned to the left. So it's you who is the cunt, for going to a punk site even though you hate punk. Go fuck yourself!

i think i saw someone say it was all tongue in cheek and that theyd leave eachother if they were being serious.. i think thats a really good point to bring up.. its hard to think theyd just be doing this for drama..theyve disagreed on other things i believe.. and i read Chris' journal entry about how disheartening it was getting tons of emails about the situation between the 2 of them, and not more emails about how some guy was in jail (i cant remember the exact person)...

its hard to take sides... each of them make good points..

for the kid who said that no one has brought up the 'one celled creature' jab. i brought up that exact point about a week ago i think in the nofx e-card thread. i think fat mike has really taken the potshots to a new level. and i think his criticisms hold more clout than hannahs. i said it.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 23, 2006 at 7:01 PM (EDT)

the comment about one celled creature is pretty enlightening. thank you. I would have never ever noticed that, since i stole potemkin city limits and dont have any of the album art. the lyrics (and the song) are so much better now. i love interpunk jabs. like back in teh day when joey vindictive and ben weasel used to smash pies in each others face. joey really liked the pie i think.

I think Fat Mike reads this and he'll be spewing that Atreyu beat him on PUNK news.

Yes, I'm sure Fat Mike will be devastated that a random 17-year-old thinks the new Atreyu is spectacular and that long-time NOFX fan Aubin Paul merely thinks the new NOFX is merely pretty good.

Leighton, there is no correlation between these two whatsoever other than the fact that both chose to convey those opinions through a CD review. Why do people always assume the opinion of one represents a publication as a whole? It's never, ever the case, but this is such a persistent attack against any sort of music publication it's mind-boggling.

I'm pretty sure it's all tongue in cheek. Fat Mike mentioned Todays Empires in "The Marxist Brothers", and a recent Propagandhi news post said that they got the idea to ebay their merch from that song.

If Fat Mike was really that pissed at Propagandhi, he would drop them from his label. If Propagandhi were really that pissed at NOFX, they would leave his label.

Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, April 23, 2006 at 4:16 PM (EDT)

'm curious as to how anyone who has paid attention to NOFX and Propagandhi didn't pick up on the lyrical content of NOFX's song "ONE CELLED CREATURE" ?

whoever did this original review was wrong in easily stating this particular song was a tribute to the adolescents song.

if you own Propagandhi's latest album Potemkin City Limits (A cd that i have listen through countless times) there was an obvious shot taken at Fat Mike in their song "Rock For Sustainable Capitalism" . In the cd booklet there was a picture of singer Chris Hannah - in a red robe, in a very small room with a mattress.. look up the lyrics to NOFX's song...actually just read there right here and see for yourself..

"Life on a mattress - in a robe, in a room full of emptiness
Knowledge has much better uses than self pity and superiority
Maybe you are , or could be the next Hoffman, Mahatma (ghandi), or Chomsky but no one will ever know.
A sum of your parts are not gonna change any hearts, not with hate in your eyes.. In order to lead by example you have to show the path to a better world, not a cell."

Im sad that i havent heard or read anything written about this back and forth criticism of each other... I find it extremely interesting, even though theres a chance that its all a joke...i dont know though..

but for sure - this is the boldest song on the album..
it would be silly to take a side in this feud..and wanting to know about it doesnt help make things any better...but it shows us while both bands are taking on bigger issues than most bands (propagandhi actually would have to deserve the most credit for doing this) that they are still immune to these smaller battles..

    interesting..

but damn, i wish i had some more information on this

I have to admit that the first time I listened to Wolves, I listened to it on my computer, and I was a bit disappointed, but I put it on my MP3 player and listened to it with headphones on and it was a lot better. I listened to it two or three times through and I have to say it's one of NOFX's better Albums. For me, they're best albums would go something like this:

    Punk In Drublic
    The Decline
    The War On Errorism
    TIE: White Trash and Wolves
Then after that...I guees So Long or Pump Up The Valuum

Wolves certainly isn't NOFX's best album, but it's definately worth a listen. There are a few songs that seem out of place, like Cantando En Espanol and Cool and Unusual Punishment, although I really did like the latter. Overall fantastic album.

    My Score:

I find it hard to imagine that so many of the people that hate the new Anti-Flag love this...sonically the two albums aren't too far off from each other, and politically they're very similiar. The only difference as far as I was concerned is that the new Anti-Flag was better overall, but this album doesn't take itself so seriously, which is a good thing.

It's cool that you used "Slow Chorus Overlap" as an example. I've always said that if I had to show someone the essence of 90's skate punk with one song, it would be that one.

That said, this album is pretty damn good. A billion times better than Errorism.

cheers, my missus is into RnB but loves that song. i quite liked errorism but again no real standout tracks apart from "whoops i od'd"

is it me or are nofx's better songs now becoming the acoustic ones?

Lynn is Lynn Strait from Santa Barbara's Snot. Lynn was a friend to many of this group. Dobbs is Lynn's dog, who was always by his side and died simultaneously with Lynn in a car crash. Dobbs is featured upon the cover of Snot's Get Some album.

    Lynn, Dobbs.

I take back what i said. this album is complete and flows nicely with the exception of: Jesusland, Getting High, Cool and Unusual. Instead of those should be: You're Wrong (punk version), I am going to Hell for this one, Everything in Moderation (or Golden Boys). And "You will lose your faith" should be the acoustic version.

Nofx was at their peak with the 1-2 punch of the Decline and Pump up the Valuum.

    The list goes:
    Good Records
    1. The Decline
    2. Pump up the Valuum
    3. Punk in Drublic
    4. Heavy Petting Zoo
    5. White Trash
    6. So Long
    7. Errorism
    8. Longest Line
    9. Ribbed

    Bad records:
    S/M Airlines
    Maximum Rock N'Roll
    Liberal animation

    My Score:

I don't see why people think it lacks cohesiveness. I believe there are three-four songs in the middle of the cd that flow together perfectly with no pause inbetween songs.

The Man I Killed is my favorite song by far and it might be the best song this band has ever written......besides the Decline.

    where do i start.....

    usa-holes is great.
man i killed is great and is the first almost "standard" punk song they;ve done (light, guitars crash, light, guitars crash)

the spanish song is total jizz.

great band, good album but as ever there are no outstanding songs in the vein of:

    slow chorus overlap
    libertine
    hopeless romantic
    walking is still honest

anyone actually put any NOFX songs on mix CDs/tapes apart from linoleum? i don't but i still love 'em

ps - saw bouncing souls in leeds tonight - weren't much cop and i love them to death - bugger

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 21, 2006 at 6:38 PM (EDT)

    1. this album is decent, but nothing exceptional. little replay value. it has already gotten old for me.

    2. to say "NOFX has always been NOFX" is a joke. compare Liberal Animation to anything they've released in the last decade, then tell me it's the same shit. it's an entirely different band (thank God). if you had said they've had the same sound for the past ten years....THAT would be an accurate statement.

maverick/scott: listen a few more times and the music starts to flow. it all sounds more coherent once you forget where you heard the songs first. I think this is a solid album, a lot of these songs will be awesome live.

it seems to me that all NOFX albums have shit songs on em mean even punk in drublic had my heart is yearning. its just a charachteristic of their albums

"please tell me one record released this year better than this one."

You want a list? So far we've had:

Lawrence Arms "Oh Calcutta" (mentioned already)
    Loved Ones-Keep Your Heart"
    Bigwig-"Reclamation"
    POS-"Audition"

I also have high hopes for the new Coup album dropping next week, as well as the upcoming releases from NMDS ing bouncing souls, which I haven't heard, but I believe it will probably be better than this. I love NOFX but this is far from the record the year!

    My Score:

well, "white trash..." is the best.
and errorism is way better than this one here, this one sounds like a b-side compilation of errorism, and not even a good one. around 4 to 5 good songs, the rest is filling it up so it doesnt seem like a big rip off. nofx, next time, wait till you have enough real good songs for a new album and not "just" songs.

good fair review by the way.

    My Score:

War on Errorism was the first I heard, but "White Trash" is probably my favorite proper album. "The Decline" is the best thing they've ever recorded.

This new one is pretty solid, but it seems like there is some filler and it's just really sloppy and thrown together. Definitely seems like they only gave about the "60%" they admit to on the first album. "USA-Holes" "The Man I Killed" and "60%" are probly my favorites.

Posted by FuckYouOiOiOi on 2006-04-21 16:22:16

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 21, 2006 at 3:17 PM (EDT)
    My Score:

I love NOFX still and will toss on their most recent albums all the time, but mostly the Decline. Probably the best So-Cal punk CD ever BTW.

I had to change the playlist of this album, cause some of the 7 inch songs I've been listening to already for close to a year:

    - USA-Holes (I didn't want to have to wade through the first version of 60% to get to this and Triple Rock, these songs rule.)
    - Seeing Double At The Triple Rock
    - We March to the Beat Of Indifferent Drums
    - Everything in Moderation (Awesome, awesome song. Should be longer, but it's rad enough as it is. Shoulda made the album.)
    - The Man I Killed
    - Benny Got Blowed Up (I didnt over kill this 7incher song yet)
    - Golden Boys (Why leave this off?)
    - Going To Hell For This One
    - Wolves in Wolves Clothing
    - Cantado en Espanol (It fits will between Wolves and 100)
    - 100 Times Fuckder
    - You Will Lose Faith
    - One Celled Creature
    - Doornails
    - 60% Reprise

The japanese song and Instant Crassic, Marxist Bros,as well as Jesus Land and the 10 minutes of testing acoustic versions of songs, see you later. This easily could have been a perfect album leaving some of the 7inch stuff off, and putting some of the EP stuff on. It still leaves it at 15 songs, which is EASILY enough.

Still a cool album that i'll listen to for a year I'm sure. I don't really listen to WOE or PUTV anymore... but I felt the same way about them when they came out as well. I can see how Fatty would be proud of the Decline and SLATFATS.
