I was probably one of very few looking forward to all 3 bands on a bill featuring goth neo-gods AFI with the Dillinger Escape Plan and Nightmare of You. I guess they could all be considered "dark" bands on one plane or another, but the diversity is plain and clear.
Havok had a little bit of trouble, but did manage his 'Jesus walk' onto the crowd's hands/heads/whatever for "God Called in Sick Today;" it wasn't as surreal as intended however, as he was stumbling quite noticeably. If it wasn't for the support I likely wouldn't have attended this show -- hell, if it wasn't for certain circumstances I probably would have left right after Dillinger, but AFI wasn't painful to watch or anything; a mild enjoyment to let me catch my breath before the hour-thirty trek home. Set list (in order):

Loved Dillinger. Swinging from the speakers and watching the emo kids below fleeing was awesome. The more I realize what AFI played, the more I'm realizing I'm paying to see Dillinger... *sigh* does afi ever play wester live?? Dear Reviewer, damn they didn't anywhere near that much new shit in Toronto. AFI did not play Last Kiss, Leaving Song, or This Secret Ninja either night in NYC. Yer friend lied to ya. They didn't play those two songs. I would believe this to be the second of the two nights AFI played NYC. A friend of mine was at both and told me the first night they played the last kiss and this secret ninja. I don't think I would mind if they played the majority of the newer material as long is they mixed the shit up. Celluloid Dream is awesome and so is Synthesthia, but in place of playing songs like that, we get stuck with the "hits" so fucking girls not grey, the leaving song 2, silver and cold, miss murder, totalimortal and (maybe days of the pheonix) take up a huge chunk of the songs where as they have much better songs they could be playing (not that those are bad, but they are just way too predicatble). That's what's annoying and if you see them on Warped Tour, that's like half thier set or so. I would believe this to be the second of the two nights AFI played NYC. Their horrible music." afi played real sloppy the show. the show itelf was real fun though but i expected much more from afi. especially jade hu i think played horribly. "No one gives a shit about Dillinger Escape Plan. Reason? Their horrible music." "i would have thought AFI would have opened. is Dillinger escape plan that unknown, or am i underestimating AFI's popularity? "i would have thought AFI would have opened. is Dillinger escape plan that unknown, or am i underestimating AFI's popularity? i was at this show. where there lots of jeffrey stars there? This was the wettest show i've ever been to. when i came out of the pit i was soaking wet with my and other people's sweat. it sucked. but the AFI show was good. they were energetic and stuff. the lighting and smoke and all that looked really epic. it was fun that's for sure. Not podcasts... I meant the KROQ Weenie Roast webcast. They sounded awful on that. I was at this show and I thought AFI did a much better job than they were given credit for in this review. After seeing podcasts and hearing friends talk about how Davey wasn't particularly on key anymore, I was nervous but I felt as though they did an even better job than last time they hit Roseland. I would have liked a little less Sing The Sorrow and maybe more of a mix of songs who cares about there old stuff miss murder is the best song anyway Their real old stuff is terrible anyway, stop complaining. i really didnt mean that to be a smartass comment about sts sts is now their old stuff too, you cant expect them to ignore that album sickboi, I wasn't being sarcastic. "I don't think I've heard them play a song off their first two albums live since '97 in the 3 times I've watched them since then so that is obviously not gonna happen anymore" After seeing that setlist I have no desire to ever see AFI live again. It would ruin my memories of them as a real punk band back in 1997 when I saw them open for Good Riddance and another headline show with Fury 66... I think it's funny how some people will defend their favorite bands that sell out, even though it's kinda indefensible. AFI weren't really a hardcore band to begin with, it's just that, as opposed to being a pop-punk band, they now try to be an emo band. Right up there w/ Hawthorne, Thursday, etc. This band has always been notorious for pushing newer material live as opposed to catering to fans of their older material. Granted, I haven't had a chance to catch them live since one of the Art of Drowning era tours but I'm not surprised they are starting to cut out those songs in favour of major label stuff. I don't think I've heard them play a song off their first two albums live since '97 in the 3 times I've watched them since then so that is obviously not gonna happen anymore. They are playing the Warped show I'm going to this year so I guess I can look forward to hearing maybe two older songs (Totalimmortal and God Called in). They have a lot of great songs throughout their career (newer albums included) so it sucks that they neglect their older fans like that. Imagine if Bad Religion or NOFX (not to compare the bands, just contrast their set list tendencies) would play sets that neglected their classic albums like that in favour of the newer albums. There would be an uproar. i didnt proof read my comment below. oh well. anyway, among all thhe mistakes... i cant tell if sickboi's comment is sarcastic, but to him and everyone else (who i know arent being sarcastic), AFI's best song has to be i wanna get a mohawk(but my mom wont let me get one) Re: AFI's popularity. decemberunderground was #1 on Billboard's album chart the week it came out (currently #3). So, yeah, I'd say they're pretty popular. at least they still play A Single Second.. that's their greatest pre-BlackSails song Wow, I can't believe AFI don't play any of their older stuff, that's just fucking ridiculous. Granted, you want to push your newer material, but based on the legions of diehard fans they have, i thought you'd get at least 1/4-1/3 pre-STS. So now they're basically pretending like ALL of their Nitro albums don't exist? Come on, what the fuck. I can understand not wanting to play "I wanna Mohawk" or something but there's so much good stuff to be found in thier discography. The four choices are pretty fucking weak too. "God Called In Sick Today" is probably their most overrated song. Where's the Underoath review?!?!?!?!?!?! Oh, also, "Summer Shudder" wasn't played this night, it was played for the first time ever on the second night. And it wasn't "The Leaving Song" it was "This Time Imperfect". *Dillinger Good show. I was one of the few in the front on both nights that enjoyed Dillinfer and that's a damn shame. The second night was far better. DIlliner was wilder, AFI's set list was better. Good times. that is a weak fucking afi set veggieska, Don't care for the new album but Summer Shudder is a good song. i would have thought AFI would have opened. is Dillinger escape plan that unknown, or am i underestimating AFI's popularity? I was planning on seeing AFI next month, but if they're ignoring their older stuff this much, I think I'll pass. |
