The PoliceThe Police: Zenyatta MondattaZenyatta Mondatta (1980)Universal Music Group Reviewer Rating: 4 Contributed by: JohnGentileJohnGentile (others by this writer | submit your own) For their their third album, the Police reclaimed some of the speed from Outlandos d'Amour and applied the polish from Reggatta de Blanc to create a long-player perfect for pop radio that could still reference its punk roots. Though the thick sheen of the production does sap some of the album's soul.
For their their third album, the Police reclaimed some of the speed from Outlandos d'Amour and applied the polish from Reggatta de Blanc to create a long-player perfect for pop radio that could still reference its punk roots. Though the thick sheen of the production does sap some of the album's soul, the Police play with enough conviction on Zenyatta Mondatta to make a record that heavily draws from their earlier efforts while taking a few steps forward.

Hi Brandon, ok.....The Police weren't terrible or anything....but I don't think it has quite the connection to punk rock that you try to make in your review. There is absolutely nothing on this album that would suggest that it was in anyway related to punk rock and, even less so, hardcore. I'm not trying to pull a "this ain't punk" thing.....I'm just saying that attempting to relate The Police to punk rock is like trying to find a relationship between Elton John and death metal. I mean, sure, the album has a "new wave-y" sound and the band members are all sporting the trendy new wave attire..........but how does any of this put these guys in the same lineage as The Damned, The Dead Boys, The Contortions, The Clash, The Ramones, or, most importantly, The Stooges??? To Jesse's comment: Ha! Ugh. Truly a classic. I consider this cd to be a fucking win. Just a lot of good classic underrated songs on here. I love it and I love the Police. Despite the fact that reunion tours are blatant cash-grabs and almost always pathetic, The Police remain my favorite band. I would agree that this album is their best. I would have to say that "Canary In A Coalmine" is the best song on this album. That song is fucking awesome. excellent album. particularly "shadows in the rain", "voices inside my head", and of course, "behind my camel". Sting. |

Let me fix my last sentence:
Zenyatta is important becuase its the last Police album to make referene to the Police's earlier sounds and one of the last punk INFLUENCED albums to be on the pop charts until the early to mid 90's.
