Ten years ago, Jim Ward was rocking out in At the Drive-In, happily fulfilling his title as “that other guitar player, you know, the one who isn’t Omar.” After that group’s sad self-destruction, Ward moved on with two-thirds of his former band to form Sparta, a band that put out one pretty awesome EP and three inoffensive albums, never getting the same press/buzz/respect/whatever of his former band’s other splinter group: the monolithic and often stupid Mars Volta.

Well I suppose after playing 2nd guitar in an amazing band, that he would consistently participate in increasingly crappy projects. i wouldn't call tortoise meandering soundtrack music, but whatever I don't know what he's talking about, Jim Wards' voice is very unique and I rather enjoy it. Saying his voice doesn't fit this 'genre' of music is stupid, it is HIS music, not Ryan Adams'. Billnye: I meant post-hardcore, not post-rock. If ATDI played meandering movie soundtrack music, I would have liked them way less. post-rock that spawned him? "3 inoffensive albums"? 'Inoffensive' is a poor adjective to use, I think "solid" would have been a better choice. post-rock that spawned him? what exactly is two-thirds of five? I saw him in Omaha and he was supposed to headline, but then Bright Eyes kind of co-opted his set and did a little rally for Obama. Long story short the concert as a whole was awesome and his set was really the highlight of the night. The show was free and he was pretty cool with opening for Bright Eyes.Bbefore Jim was a guy called The Secret Life of Sparrows who was really good as well. Check him out. Isn't that a Saves the Day album cover??? |
