Finally, and where I least expected it to come from. From the onslaught of records being released this year by established bands and largely in the melodic punk field, there is alot coming out (Strung out, Whippersnapper, No use for a name, Face to face, Lagwagon just concerning the staple bands of fat records and melodic punk). That doesn't even take into account the records in the fall and outside melodic punk (get up kids, alkaline trio, ALL/DESCENDENTS, Jets to brazil, everyone is releasing something this year). No, it was Flanders' chili. Great CD, but it's too poppy compared to their prior CDs. Hopefully the new CD will be better, but overall, a great CD alrighty, this is the first album i got from nufan, and i loved it instantly. Except for some reason, i dont like this is a rebel song, everything else is very well done. Than i bought more betterness, which in my opinion was possibly better than hard rock bottom, than i got making friends which was good, and than leche con carne. In comparison to the other 3 cds i have, i feel that hard rock bottom is indeed much different than the older style. I feel they got smarter and more mature. Tony's voice has gotten much better from leche all the way to hard rock bottom and they are now 1 of my all time favorite bands. It just seems every damn CD from NUFAN rocks some socks. GARB, there's like two good songs on the whole fuckin cd.. Opps the strung out comment wasn't by the original reviewer - sorry! For me this album is ok, nothing more. Sure it has nice melodies, but I think it lacks depth and is basically just a repeat of their previous album. Much preferred their earlier stuff like "making friends" and "daily grind". It was Chief effin Wiggum's Chili. Oh god. I thought "More Betterness" was a bit more pop than my usual taste ("Making Friends" is better), but I still enjoyed it. No, it was definitely Wiggum's. The cops and him got together and got a chili from Costa Rica which they had to take out with gloves and a welding mask. no it was Flanders Chili.... This CD reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer has visions after eating the insanity peppers. Remember when he ate Flander's "5 Alarm Chili"? "One, Two, and a Half..." I walked into a Best Buy, not hoping for many punk albums , but was very suprised about all the FAT bands they had! I was going to get swingin' udders, or NOFX, but I decided on this one. Before I bought this, I had never heard a song by this band. I popped it into my stereo and was blown away. Somewhat poppy, but harder edged. I like it. I only bought it , becuase my friend Rocio told me that this band was really good. I took her word for it and I really like this band now. I dont agree that its the best FAT release this year. I give that title to the Lawrence fuckin' arms "Apathy And Exhaustion", but this one earns a close second. I was even moved to tears by "Let Me Down". This album suprised me, becuase I just didnt know what to expect. This CD reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Homer has visions after eating the insanity peppers. Remember when he ate Flander's "5 Alarm Chili"? "One, Two, and a Half..." This album is actually a step back for a band that USED to be entertaining. I find it absolutely hilarious that people still listen to these guys, considering its SOOOOO un punk rock to have anything to do with slowing your music down and stretching your musical abilities. While I gave them credit for trying something new with More Betterness...this is the follow that should have been called "More of the same", although Rory's galloping NOFX drumming on some songs totally doesn't not jive with the rest of the music. To Anonymous, Excellent ablum and a pleasant surprise. I deem it better than More Betterness. Faster and better hooks. To me, and to others I know that have heard it, Sly has crafted original sounding pop melodies--not rehash (cough...Strung Out...American Paradox...ahem). I think the new NUFAN is quite good. To Handsome Pete, To Anonymous: To Handsome Pete: uh... good, but not 10 star good. To anonymous: To Handsome Pete: The title says it all. No Use has hit rock bottom......hard. oh man i was dissappointed when i heard this album. to all of you saying that this is great, and better than "more betterness" i want to say this: its not a punk album its a pop album, with maybe one or two punk songs on it. and its not better than more betterness because all the songs are not half as fast, although they was very much poppy on the last album. so just knowck it off. its an OK album, not more than 3 of 10 from me. I havent listened to it yet but I've heard mixed things. Im actually scared to buy it because More betterness wasnt really that good, then they came out with the live album and it was pretty good of coures all the same songs on it. NUFAN kicks ass live but no releases can compare to Making Friends, the Daily grind, and of course con carne. There styles changing big time and There stuffs just getting way to Melodic for me. If you Like or Dislike NUFAN i liked the pony thing Just for the record, "This is a Rebel Song" is a sinead O'connor cover. It's also the worst song on the album. Meh. Yeah I dunno about that pony thing.. heh. But I hope that when I buy this cd *I* won't be disappointed. I hear its good from other people, but it doesn't compare to Leche. To me, Daily Grind WOULD have been their best except for the fact that it was incredibly short. So Leche is the best to me. But anyhoo, that pony thing was really like off on a tangent there.. the pony thing was really really weird. i remember i was just starting to get into No Use from listening to their songs off the Fat comps and when i saw that "more betterness" was coming out i bought it thinking i'd get some songs similar to "justified black eye" and "on the outside". i was wrong. its a terribly slow, poppy album in my opinion without a single good song. can't say i understand what all the fuss is about with that album or "hard rock bottom" if it sounds like this. but to each his/her own. i'll stick with Larry Arms, Rise Against, and Strung Out from the Fat roster though, thanks. Ok...first off, the pony thing was a little weird, but i'll let that slide this time. From what i've heard from this record, it's great, very much like More Betterness!, which was/is one of my all time favorite records. NUFAN is one of the most technically profiecient bands out there and that is seen on pretty much all of their releases. Needless to say, i'm camping outside the record store monday the 20th to pick this one up. By the way, the Dance Hall Crasher singer in question is the beautiful, talented, Karina Denike, who appears on other Fat releases such as Me First's "Are A Drag" on "Phantom of the Opera," she did a song with Limp on Honest Don's, and appears not only on the studio version, but the Live In A Dive version of NUFAN's "On The Outside." But I digress. Good review, save the pony thing... i think you forgot that d4 is releasing on fat... Ponies? this album is absolutely one of their best. Better than the last two anyways. (i always prefer the daily grind) Not a bad album by any means. Not much different than More Betterness either. Have to say Strung Out's American Paradox by far surpasses this album. They created new and unique songs while at the same time trying to expand their horizons. I now have a difficult time believing that No Use is capable of doing the same. If you enjoyed More Betterness, and enjoy buying the same album twice, I whole heartedly endorse doing so. I don't know, it's good, but not great. Very melodic and soft- not hard like their really early stuff- it's much like the last record except with better songs in my opinion- great if melodic punk is your thing. |
