Media: Against Me! posts dance remix of "White People for Peace"

Against Me! has posted a remix of the first single from their upcoming Sire debut, New Wave. You can hear the remix of "White People for Peace" their MySpace page. The remix was done by the album's producer, Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage).

You might have missed what's going on in Tom, Warren, Andrew and James lives lately as the coverage has slowed a bit. There's been a video, the making of said video, limited 7" preorder, a tour with some friends, and a limited, tour-only release.

Oh, and New Wave is due out July 10, 2007.

Well, I've heard 4 new songs out of 10, and I've liked them all. So, unless all the other songs completely suck, I think I'll give it better than a 4/10.

well, four outta ten ain't bad...

I liked it better when they did acoustic versions of their songs instead of Dance remixes. The acoustic versions of electric songs and electric versions of acoustic songs always added so much to the album versions. The dance remixes are only a novelty.

as i listen to this, here's what i don't understand.

remixes in general are there for filler. there's no artistic integrity (by the original artist, that is). it's an exercise for a kid with pro tools. i never really liked when remixes were released because it seems like something a label would say "hey release this" and the band says "yeah whatever."

now this is a song with fairly serious content, and to put a "dance party remix" or whatever, i mean that seems to not only degrade the original, but also the meaning behind it. not that i really expect much from this band anymore, but it really shows how much of a 180 they've pulled.

They did it for SFAFC, too. And while I personally haven't liked any of the electronic AM remixes, you can't dismiss it as a "kid with pro tools". There is a whole genre of legit music based around programming and twiddling knobs. Just because it doesn't involve flailing on a guitar doesn't mean it's not music.

As this one was done by Butch, I have a feeling he did it and the band enjoyed it and thought it was something that fans might want to hear. It's not like they enlisted the Neptunes.

As for cheapening the song, I think AM! has always been about spiting in the face of convention. If you feel that tooling around with one of their songs lessens it's meaning or lessens their feelings behind it I don't think they really care. If you honestly think allowing someone to do some remixing to your song (for fun as I doubt this thing will turn profit on their myspcace) degrades the true meaning, you need to quit taking yourself so seriously.

The whole idea is that the masses have reduced war and suffering to just entertainment. The truth is hidden behind a sugar coating that keeps ratings up and actual thought down. So wouldn't it be clever to take a song that does have a message and then make it easier for the idiots to swallow by giving it a poppier, more appealing sound?

i would think that if i couldn't picture half the songs on the album in "dawson's creek."

this is pretty much the only political song on the new one with any direction. it's just strange they'd pick the one with meaning to re-do. i'd wager it's more because it's a single.

you said yourself that you don't have much respect left for this band. the truth is you feel cheated because this band is doing well, and they aren't your special secret favorite band anymore. then you create bullshit reasons to hate on them because you can't deal with your feelings. seriously, why do you assume the label runs their lives and dictates everything they do? what possible benefit does the label have for making and posting a dance remix of a punk band? as far as i know this song only exists (and will only exist) on their myspace page, so how can it be filler? its far more likely that this is something that came out of boredom and they decided to share it. you are also implying that dance music is not art, and that messages in dance music are worthless. that is rud

1. i've heard the new album once or twice, and i'm coming from that point of view, as well. however, i'm also referring to tom gabel's interview answers and whatnot when i say "lack of respect." i have enjoyed most of their albums and never cared about venue size. the respect factor comes from going back on a pride you claim to hold dearly.

2. the comment about art made me laugh. i think something needs to have a message and meaning to be art. i don't find much of that in techno, unless you like acid.

3. "here' i'm bored so i'm going to take a catchy song that potentially has meaning, dull it down with even more production, and then post it on my myspace page." it sounds like the logic of a 10 year old. if it wasn't the label's decision or doing, who's was it? the band is on tour and has plenty to do. i doubt they were so bored as to re-mix

thoughts on the new Bad Religion cd?

It's starting to grow on me after the 3rd listen. I think it's more like Process... than Empire..., but that's just my opinion.

It definately has some boring moments, but overall, good cd.

Process is my favourite Bad Religion album. So you've just made me look forward to this album even more.

I pretty much enjoy the entire album; the only song I don't care for is Submission Complete.

I'll admit though, if you're looking for anything innovative music wise then don't bother, they pretty much phoned in all the riffs. I think that’s most people’s complaints with this album, it’s that the riffs are pretty generic and predictable. I don’t really mind though because I’ve always enjoy Bad Religion more for the lyrics, vocals, & the melodies created by those. Plus it’s their 14th album, I’m not expecting them to pull out something completely different at this point in their careers.

I think It's a great album but those negative critics and naysayer’s who are eager to point out any bands Pennywise-syndrome will have a field day with this album.

I agree with everything you just said. I thought it was totally generic from the off, but then after a few listens I realised that's why I actually like it so much, and why I have always liked Bad Religion. This band is the barbers shop quartet of punk rock, and I have no problem with that! Requiem For Dissent is my favourite song right now, it's got almost an Against The Grain era feel to it.

Sweet. My favourite BR albums are Process of Belief and Against the Grain. On top of this, my favourite thing about Bad Religion are the vocal harmonies.

From what I gather the new album = A + B + C. I'm very excited to hear it. (I'm not listening to the leak before it's released.)

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Reinventing Axl Rose was terrible. Searching For A Former Clarity was fucking amazing.

But this White People For Peace (I haven't heard the remix yet) lost its 'folk' sound. Too much mix in it, and I hope the rest of the album isn't like this.

Reinventing Axl Rose is one of the greatest records I will ever hear. However, unlike the vast majority of people who love that record as much as I do, I actually like Searching for a Former Clarity quite a bit. Tracks 7 to 13 on that record are brilliant, tracks 1-3 are alright and I really fucking HATE Unprotected Sex with Multiple Partners. Very much so.

I personally don't really like the Against Me! remixes but that's because I just don't think they sound good (nothing about remixes in general). But, all this "I can't believe they did this, totally not anarchist" shit is retarded. Chances are Butch did this for fun or as a favor to the band and they thought fans would like it. As they already have a "White People for Peace" single and a 7" with the pre-order, I doubt they did this to sell. It just sounds like something for fun and while I know teh punx isn't about fun some if y'all need to relax.

The songs are not as good as the older stuff but is still better than 98% of the shit on major labels and 80% better than stuff on the indie labels. At least they're not Anti-Flag... Just Kidding.

This is actually pretty good, considering I hate remixes. Especially Against Me remixes. But it just seems like this is what the song would sound like if Against Me were one of those indie bands that plays on David Letterman all the time, instead of coming from punk rock.

Doesn't seem like dance music, just seems like an indie band style to me.

I respect Butch Vig and what he does, by he must have been really bored to put this together. Against Me! does not require remixes of their songs. Didn't they learn from the Mouse on Mars and Ad-Rock remixes? This rendition of the song is awful -- it's not even "dance" -- who the hell is going to shake down to this? No one.
