Two new Mischief Brew releases

Philadelphia's Mischief Brew has two new releases on tap. The first is a split with Joe Jack Talcum (The Low Budgets, Dead Milkmen). On the split LP, the Brew offers up six new tracks and Talcum seven, with both artists turning in renditions of Dead Milkmen songs.

Up next is the Jobs in Steeltown 7" which features two "gritty, bluesy, somber ditties" about the usual: "the ups and downs of decay." The cover will feature a picture by Erik Petersen.

It's friday morning. God, fuck day jobs. seriously. I just want to tattoo my hands.

Instead I think im going to buy a muffin, and sit at my desk reading "Dark Tower V; Wolves of the Calla" and probably write a thing or two for my website.

(yes I know, my day job can't be that bad if that's what im going to do with my day, but seriously, fuck day jobs.)

In truth, nothing. I work for a real estate company/small office sales in manhattan and do bullshit admin work. But most of the time no one needs my help, so I just kinda hang out (Which is sweet, but when you typically have NOTHING to do all day, you just end up wanting to shoot yourself out of boredom) especially in the summer, i swear to good no one works in the summer, therefore making it hard for them to need my assistance with anything.

it is also demoralizing to KNOW that if you didn't show up at work, it wouldn't matter in the slightest. but you HAVE to.

I need a cahnge of environment and more money. But i don't want to have to reallllly work. its a trade off.

seriously. you do what you have to do to get by, but i think the thing that separates musicians (artists in general) is a willingness to make horrible life-choices in pursuit of passion.

desk jobs do suck, but what can you do? it doesn't get in the way of my life. so, for now it works.

philosophy is by far the most useful education I have engaged in. It's not 'pratical' by any means, but i'm definitely of the opinion that being happy is way more important than being sucessful.

its pretty awesome, im in the fifth book. the thing is I made a commitment to read it all when I started, which is kind of helpful. The first few books are intentionally....long....and are more character development than anything else. Which is obviously awesome once you get further into the series, but in the beginning it can be frustrating.

I work at a desk to but I don't get my own space even I get a temporary work station in a file room alone by myself, the dungeon as I call it. I'm 22, I've been treated a lot worse at jobs since I started working illegally in the 7th grade or so. Office aren't so bad, I don't have the same relationship I had with people at other shit holes and my creativity and hope might be sucked dry but hey I don't need those anyways.

Yeah I know what you mean. I have one of those jobs that you could consider sweet because I slack off a lot and peruse websites and write and read sometimes, but the boredom after doing this for 40 hours a week is crazy. As I'm writing this, my girlfriend is sitting in my office reading, that's how much is going on in here.

Mischief Brew is one of the most over-looked and under-rated bands in the last 5 years. First time i saw Erik was in 99 or 2000. me and a few of my friends drove down to Balitmore from Boston to see Against Me play a food not bombs basement and Mischief Brew opened, they were easily as good as AM that night.

Yeah, seen Mischief Brew several times in Baltimore and once in Philadelphia. I love seeing them live, I like it better when Erik's playing solo. So good.

Popping the question soon. We've been planning this for a while. The ceremony is going to be quick and non-religious and the reception is going to be a potluck picnic with some kegs, wines boxes, and a few bottles of Korbel for the toast. (Not so much hard liquor thought - if baldsteve and kneel drank as much whiskey as they could on my dime I'd go broke.) I'm working on getting two of my favorite local bands, the Hall Monitors and JP McDermott & Western Bop to play.

Because it's outdoor we can invite pretty much as many damn people as we want (it's just after a point it'll have to be Bring Your Own Folding Chair). Of course there's an open invitation for my brothers on the org to show up.

I picked up the split with Joe Jack Talcum yesterday. The Joe Jack Talcum side sounds a lot like his solo. Half sounds like acoustic versions of what could be Dead Milkmen songs, the other half is kind of Daniel Johnston-esque (but much better guitar playing). The Mischief Brew side is completely solid, and Erik Peterson is way underrated.

One of the best concerts I ever went to was a Joe Jack solo gig. Everyone in the room was trashed and bantering with him.

"I forgot how that one starts."
"Just play the punk part, crystal shit!"

The harmonica-laden version of "Takin' Retards to the Zoo" and the big drunken singalong finale of "Life is Shit" were fucking amazing.

Last time I saw him, he opened for The Presidents. He forgot the words to parts of Punk Rock Girl. I've found myself seeing his solo show unexpectedly a handful of times here in Philly and every time is a treat. Makes me mad that I have to plan a trip to Texas to see Dead Milkmen play. Also, if you're not a Low Budgets fan, you should be.

Erik Petersen definitely deserves so much more attention than he gets. He's a musical and lyrical genius, one of my biggest influences, and an incredibly solid dude. He's always willing to talk at shows and listen to my rambling about how much I love his music and how if it wasn't for him, my own music wouldn't be the same... blah, blah, blah.
