Good thing there's no way this could have just been a publicity stunt.

HeresLookinAtYou (December 1, 2009)

What a fucking wanker.

dev (December 1, 2009)

Never heard of him.

damnitsderek (December 1, 2009)

Nor have I. I feel as if we're the minority here.

Shark-e (December 1, 2009)

If I thought he had any idea what he was doing and what it meant, I might be more inclined to be offended. Luckily this is just another humorous addition to the trainwreck of a life story that is Pete Doherty.
But man, how about them Libertines?

BasementBartender (December 1, 2009)

Well said

the_braces (December 2, 2009)

real talk. dude was fucking kate moss. just sayin'

iamgodsongs (December 1, 2009)

while i'm not sure how serious this was, dude is still a drugged out lunatic. seems like he's always gotten more press for that than his actual music, so this comes as no surprise

RondoMondo (December 1, 2009)

This guy is STILL alive? I thought he succumbed to his own stupidity a long time ago?

Shark-e (December 1, 2009)

I remember a few years back, NME featured him in their Death Calculator where they take into account the subject's history, habits, and behaviors and use that to find out when he's likely to die. I believe the answer was something in the neighborhood of five years before the date of publication.

fox82 (December 1, 2009)

So according to NME how long do we have? 1-2 years?

MattRamone (December 1, 2009)

I'm convinced Pete Doherty is the greatest troll ever to take on the British music press. He's tricked them into liking HORRENDOUSLY shitty music that only a stuck-up Limey who doesn't like rock n roll would love and made himself internationally famous for being a rich white person who smoked crack. This is just more proof.

the_other_scott (December 1, 2009)

first Libertines record is great.

LookingForCorpses (December 1, 2009)

Absolutely, as is the second one.

MattRamone (December 1, 2009)

Hey I heard the Buddyhead dudes were having a whack off rodeo with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club if you were interested in other fashion model bands.

LookingForCorpses (December 1, 2009)

Matt "I've Never Really Listened to Most of the Bands I Talk Shit About" Ramone

LookingForCorpses (December 1, 2009)

And this is from the guy who called the CobraSkulls one of the best punk bands of all time on his blog.

acris (December 1, 2009)

yep.

MattRamone (December 1, 2009)

The Libertines were the sound of dipshit hipster kids posturing. They rocked about as hard as the Strokes, which is to say not fucking at all.

24HourPriapism (December 1, 2009)

we don't agree on much, sir, but we agree on this.

the_other_scott (December 1, 2009)

The first Strokes record is also really good. Hipsters also really like The Hold Steady, Ted Leo, and The Gaslight Anthem.

MattRamone (December 1, 2009)

Gah, it's so fucking boring. And I didn't complain about who listened to them (mostly); it was more that they very might as well have been some fashion photographers idea of what a rock band looks like for how much their "don't give a fuck image, look at my torn $70 t-shirt and dangling cigarette" trumped anything like interesting songs or good playing.

the_other_scott (December 1, 2009)

your argument would work better if they weren't a pretty decent band.

LookingForCorpses (December 1, 2009)

And didn't have some amazingly catchy songs.

party-animal (December 1, 2009)

Miley Cyrus' new song is fucking catchy that doesn't mean she's not an asshole, image driven piece of shit and her music generally sucks.

LookingForCorpses (December 1, 2009)

Way to follow the thread, junior.

Sgt_Mighty (December 1, 2009)

Yes, pretty much every band has a precisely calculated image. Pretty much all of these images have stereotypes associated with them. The only people this matters to are those who cling on to them in the hopes of pointing them out and appearing witty and sardonic.

It's like how the word bro is used exponentially more often by sarcastic internet critics than by actual "bros"

LookingForCorpses (December 1, 2009)

Keep in mind, you're replying to a guy who's shitting on bands and their image and his screen name is RAMONE. One of THE most image driven/calculated image bands in history.

acris (December 1, 2009)

so you're saying you dislike bands that have a certain image and disregard their image altogether? how shallow.

their songs are very good. you obviously have only listened to your 30 second previews on itunes without giving any thought to it.

MattRamone (December 1, 2009)

Nah, I downloaded them off Soulseek when they first came out and thought they sounded like shit.

I'm just saying if someone looks like a douchebag, they probably are. I don't dislike them just for their image. I think they sound like a bag of ass in a snowglobe full of diarrhea. I'm just saying the Spin fashion page look is another another reason to label them wankers and move on.

acris (December 1, 2009)

so...you ARE shallow.

LookingForCorpses (December 1, 2009)

That nails this dude 100%. He's one of those dudes who says "image doesn't matter, but I don't like bands with an image."

dev (December 1, 2009)

I must be living under a rock, I've honestly never heard of this dude. I'll consider myself lucky for now, I guess.

RondoMondo (December 1, 2009)

I agree. He's all publicity, no talent. I don't see what people see in this guy or any of his bands, or any of his music.

Shark-e (December 1, 2009)

He's changed a bit since his only worthwhile project split up. When he had Carl Barat to balance out his insanity, he made some great music. After losing his basis in reality, he turned into what we see now in the tabloids.

OzmanX (December 1, 2009)

Come on they weren't half bad. I even went to go check them oot when they stopped by Socal all those years back... after Pete left the band. It was a good show.

24HourPriapism (December 1, 2009)

fawlty towers was goddamned awesome.

MattRamone (December 1, 2009)

we don't agree on much, sir, but we agree on this.

returnofdebs (December 1, 2009)

the picture of basil was the only reason i clicked read more.

the_other_scott (December 1, 2009)

what a fucking clown.

24HourPriapism (December 1, 2009)

also: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDI9icmwe48

what a fucking reprehensible douchebag.

I_Rock_Hard (December 1, 2009)

i love this guy.

he's so in your face. he doesn't give a FUCK. he writes amazing music and pushes the boundaries.

and for the record, we all know it was the zionist jews who orchastrated the holocaust anyway, so who gives a fuck

RondoMondo (December 1, 2009)

This is some major jackassery if I've ever seen it.

the_other_scott (December 1, 2009)

are you for fucking real?

14theroad (December 1, 2009)

Where's Christine when you need her?

acris (December 1, 2009)

the guy is clearly a troll and has been for quite some time

iamgodsongs (December 1, 2009)

my thoughts exactly, too bad he sucks at it. i hope he's real, that would make me happy.

returnofdebs (December 1, 2009)

Watch the first minute.

iamgodsongs (December 1, 2009)

does anyone else see half of the comments on this site as a feeble pissing contest to prove who's more jaded?

AmericanRiot (December 1, 2009)

i see it as opportunism at it's worst. i'm not jaded, i just think people stopped being awesome some years ago. if things keep up the way they're going it's a sad future...no flying cars indeed.

iamgodsongs (December 1, 2009)

i hate to identify with any specific label for myself, but will admit having extremely misanthropic tendencies. I agree with you about 99% of humanity basically being shitty, though i'm not sure they were ever worth anything to begin with. i'm speaking specifically about music. we're not grumpy old men or anything. there is a lot of trite shit as far as popular music goes, but i think there is a lot, if not more that in the past, of music that is sincere, and rules too.

AmericanRiot (December 2, 2009)

i am a bit of a grumpy old man. a lot of my problem has to do with oversaturation. everywhere there is constant bombardment of not that good to crappy music and because of bullshit press i get to hear it is all great. consequently, i feel completely out of touch with the current state of music. in recent years instead of working my way through endless amounts of modern bands, i have went even further in the past and dwelled into 50s rock n roll and country dating back to the early 1900s. i know what i like and a lot of it boils down to simplicity and honesty, what drew me into punk initially. maybe it feels like the emotion has been smoothed away in music too much by the new age production. humanity exists but technology is chipping it away. then again that's a whole nother story altogether.

SATAN_the_KOREAN_DINOSAUR (December 1, 2009)

10/10 for the picture.

niveK82 (December 1, 2009)

Wow, I watched that episode of Fawlty Towers last night

crackpotdemagogue (December 1, 2009)

could have been an honest mistake. i wasn't even aware that that song was principally a 'nazi only' song.

SouthernLovin (December 1, 2009)

I'll agree. I mean, "_________ uber alles" just sounds like some stereotypical thing you'd say to a crowd in Germany or a German-speaking country.

HumanUnkind (December 2, 2009)

i just looked it up and while the first verse of Deutschlandliedwas used by the nazis, they still sing the third verse of that song as the official national anthem. So, i agree. possibly a mistake, although pete docherty is a wank anyway.

mechpope13 (December 1, 2009)

stay classy

SmyD (December 1, 2009)

Isn't it illegal to do this in Germany?

JBL nearly got arrested for doing the Nazi salute in Germany.
At least he was funny.
This guy is just a douche.

LookingForCorpses (December 1, 2009)

And that would presumably be the reason he was "pulled off stage."

acris (December 1, 2009)

yes, it has been banned for quite some time

Misanthropee (December 1, 2009)

Uh, actually it's still the German national anthem.

acris (December 2, 2009)

He sang the first verse, which is what the article is referring to and therefore what I am referring to. It has been banned and singing it can lead to prosecution on the base that it is defaming the national anthem, which is protected by German law.

Misanthropee (December 1, 2009)

No actually, it's not. It doesn't have an exclusively NSDAP connotation and is still used today, albeit usually by nationalists. But singing even the first stanza is by no means illegal.

BasementBartender (December 1, 2009)

The guys a genius... perhaps that will explain why he's so crazy....

BasementBartender (December 1, 2009)

The guys a genius... perhaps that will explain why he's so crazy....

UrkMan (December 1, 2009)

Dude got to bed Kate Moss, shot to nabby.

nick_s (December 1, 2009)

Egotistical, self involved, drug dustbin acts like a cunt, there's a suprise....

positiveatom (December 1, 2009)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyLuuPg321c

Deadpan (December 1, 2009)

Apparently he didn't realise the nazi connotations the first verse had. So I'll give him this one.

Doesn't change the fact that he's a useless douche though. God, I hate The Libertines and every other band like them who sound like they should have never left the pub. So boring. They couldn't sound any more middle class if they tried.

ashtraymonument (December 1, 2009)

"began signing Nazi anthem"

come on guys! you're editors! edit!

at_the_drive_in_21 (December 2, 2009)

Well, "Deutschland über alles" is the first stanza of the full song, "Das Deutschlandlied". The current anthem is the third stanza of the same song. Thus, anyone singing the current German national anthem is technically singing the same song.
