What if it's horrible? I'm all for supporting bands but if an album stinks, I'm not going to buy it. I view album streams as a way of finding out if I like the album or not. If I can't find a stream, there's other extremely fast and easy ways to hear the album before buying it.

Region locking has always been bullshit anyways but it's particularly humourous on the internet. Even if piracy wasn't an option, you can still use a proxy or modifiy your http headers so why are these stone age media companies wasting everyone's time and promoting piracy?

Stealing food is zero-sum: When you eat the food it is gone forever. And creating more of that food requires time and money. Huge, HUGE difference with digital media, which can be "stolen" without creating a deficit and which can be reproduced infinitely at no cost.

Not everything in this world is free, but ALL information is and forever will be. Man up and accept natural law.

Producing the recording takes time and effort. But as soon as it hits a digital format, it becomes free. Period.

I will pay to listen to a band live. I will pay for their shirts and for their vinyls, and even for their CDs sometimes, because I want them to have money to continue being a band. All those things are worth something to me. A digital copy of a recording, however, has no intrinsic value. If I pay for one it is straight-up charity. It costs no time and money to copy ones and zeros.

The war against piracy is over. The only question is how much more time and money will be wasted trying to fight the inevitable.

For someone who claims to have some tech knowledge you are making some false statements. It does take time/money to copy data.

Also you seem to want to be paid for your intellectual property (see New Review section), but have no issues taking other peoples? Sound pretty much like every other crybaby out there. Waaaahhhh, I want all media free, but still want to be paid, waaaahhhh.

I release a LOT of stuff under copyleft/CC/GPL licensing. I spend a very good chunk of my life doing work for free -- in good faith. What bothers me is exploitation, not unpaid labor.

So instantly making a thousand digital copies of the new NOFX album on your terabyte hard drive you'd have anyway costs you time and money? How do you figure that?

1st the data has to come from somewhere, so let's say it's a torrent. That data is stored in several locations, it costs money for the transfer of data, the storage of the data, the website that links up the data (notice all the adds on the torrent sites?...they are making money off of other people's IP). And although you may be getting the data for "free", it still cost someone money to get it to you.

And that's a dumb example. Why would someone make a 1000 digital copies on their own hard-drive?

Would you read an entire book before deciding to buy it? Probably not. Also, not all information is free. Some information comes at a GREAT cost, namely the lives of the people who bring it to the public.
On a side note, I'm finding it hard to play devils advocate like this for an album called "Self Entitled"

I think you should try making a living at whatever your career is, without being paid. See how long you last at a job with no money before you stop doing it. That's the reality here. Less money going to musicians means less musicians making music. You could make the argument that they should be doing it for the love of it and the passion, but I guarantee you that there are a giant number of great albums that never would of been made if the people behind the music couldn't make a living off of it.

It's funny you'd bring this up.

I DO make a living off things I don't get paid for. I go to a potential employer or contractor, point at this big super-awesome thing I created out of the goodness of my heart, and they hire me to do that for them. Simple. I create for free, yet make money. If somebody "steals" it from them, I'm glad. It's an arms race and it's good for everyone when that happens because it spurs further innovation and spreads existing knowledge.

I have a friend who pulls in over a quarter-mil a year based on code he writes and releases for free. He teaches people how to use it and how to write similar software. Information is FREE. No matter how much you scream and cry and stomp your feet, the genie isn't going back. Natural fucking law.

You misread, then. The thing I created remains free. Someone wants me to pay for something similar based on that thing, and I do it and I take the money because two parties have made an arrangement for the exchange of a single cohesive "product." However I do not think the thing I created for THEM has any intrinsic value, and I do believe that it was born free, therefore when possible and applicable I will leak it or otherwise make it available for public use.

To be more specific, all I'm getting paid for is the time and energy I spend doing something. That's it. When I'm done and it's out of my hands, the money stops. This is different from a CD, where time and energy is put into recording music, which in and of itself is valuable -- but then it's duplicated into a format that's intrinsically worthless and implicitly free (as in speech, not as in beer). That part is what changes everything. You can't digitize and duplicate my time and effort. You can however do so with my finished product, which is why that's not what's being sold. The thing being sold is ME and my time, that's all.

BTW I legitimately do download and listen to parts of albums before buying them -- especially in cases like this when a digital version goes out before I can get my hands on anything else and I can't help myself. Happened just last week with Propagandhi. And I often do read big chunks of books from the library before I decided to buy a copy to add to my permanent collection. So HAH!

Upon first listen, I already like this more than their last release. "Coaster" definitely had more fun/jokey songs, but took longer than expected to come around to. The aggression in this release is pretty damn solid.

I've been a diehard fan for two decades, and this is the first album since "Heavy Petting Zoo" that didn't immediately strike me as being high quality. I hope it grows on me, but the melodies seem a bit boring and it's short on humor. IMO, NOFX was always the one band that could be counted on for a strong effort on each album. Hopefully this isn't the beginning of the end.

Not only it leaked many days ago, but the stream is not available in my 'region'. Of course it won't be released in vinyl or CD around here either and it won't even be available in my local iTunes store in brazilian currency. I guess I could buy a legal download in their official website (in expensive US dollars without listening to it first)? Boy, they really want me to download this illegally don't they?

haha! In the good old days, none of these labels would mail records to Brasil, but most importantly we didn't even know about most bands in these labels or even the labels itself (like Touch and Go). The only independent punk label that had records edited around here were Epitaph (Bad Religion, Rancid and Offspring). Other than that, you had to have a friend that somehow had a recorded cassette tape of some band so you could make a copy.

When the internet started to get popular and Napster appeared I started listening for the first time to bands I had heard about but never before had a chance to hear. When I really liked one them I would order the CD via Amazon, paying in expensive american dollars plus the high import taxes charged when I would receive it in the post office (yes, I'm part of the white elite). Nowadays many of those bands tour Brasil and make money with that without ever having a record released here, so the least they could do is make the streaming available to this 'region' so we can at least hear it before they ask us to spend our money in dollars to get their record.

I will agree that just because someone downloads a record they aren't necessarily taking money from the artist (the pirate may never have bought it in the first place).
Who determines what is worthless? When you have been getting music, movies, comics, etc. for free for so long (at least the last 10 years) it is pretty easy to justify continuing to do it. These are the same people who have thousands upon thousands of Mp3 files on their hard drives and consider themselves music superfans.
What you are saying is that there are millions of people running around with millions of mp3 files that they would consider worthless? Tell them all to wipe their hard drives then...its all worthless information which they value none of so they shouldn't care.
The fact is that people have been conditioned to now believe that music is a free entitlement and that there is no cost to producing art.

I'd love to budge, I find nothing more invigorating than learning something that changes my mind about something big. However this is SO clear to literally every major player in the tech world it's far past debate. No one argues about whether or not information is free, it's about how we approach that reality. You can legislate against it like the drug war, or work with it. The music industry is dying because they've taken the former approach.

Hey, I was just commenting on the good old days. There's a certain nostalgic aspect about everything being difficult and expensive. That being said, It's obviously an exaggeration to say they are 'asking' for me to download it, but they really aren't making things easy for their millions of fans outside of the USA. They do make money selling us imported records, imported merch and playing shows to foreigners all over the world. It would be cool if we could at least stream their new record, and it is reasonable to want to know if the record is any good before spending money on it.

I know there's costs to produce anything, but I never felt guilty to make cassete or CD copies of records I would probably never buy anyway, as I don't feel downloading mp3 nowadays. At least I get to know a lot of cool bands that I would never listen to otherwise and I can give back to these bands by buying their record if it is really great or by going to their shows if I ever have the opportunity. Also, it's not like independent bands were making a lot of money by selling record in the past either. Things are not black and white as you're trying to put it.

72 Hookers is easily the best album opener they've had in many, many years. Fantastic song. I also really dig I Believe In Goddess, Cell Out (that electronic bass sound is incredible), and Ronnie & Mags. I Got One Jealous Again, Again is also AWESOME. Great lyrics and an amazing opening riff on that song.

The rest is total filler. So all in all, two fantastic songs, three good songs, and six or seven crap tracks. Not bad for Album #7,005.

So, the number one complaint so far is that it isn't streaming in your region? For fuck's sake, technology really has ruined us.

I did the Rdio preview thing myself and heard enough to know that this album is more fierce than Coaster, which I dig. It's faster and contains less filler (my biggest complaint with Coaster). NOFX continues to represent 90's style punk rock extremely well. I grew up on albums that sounded like this, so I'll take it over the trendy new "punk" (ahem, "indie") stuff any day.

I'll buy this, even though I *gasp* haven't heard it all the way though yet!

It'd be cool for us spotify people if we could get a new release list of what punk records they add to spotify. It'd be pretty handy cause sometimes spotify puts shit up early and other times really late (Jr Juggernaut was up like 2 days early and Failed States still isn't up). Also a lot of shit just isn't on spotify like It's alive records so it'd be a cool guide.

this album is rad. definitely their best since SLATFATS. 72 Hookers is my favourite opener they've ever done, and I, Fatty is just perfect. I'm just happy Fatty can write such kick ass songs this late into his career.

Haven't really been into these guys much lately, but musically this is probably their best since SLATFATS. Fatty's vocals are off a bit though, not like usual good off, but weird off. This Machine is 4, Cell Out (mostly for the electronic bass), and I've Got One Jealous Again, Again (sad and damn clever) are the highlights. Less than filler than Coaster and Wolves for sure.

Ronnie and Mags! Outstanding song! I know it's supposed to be a diss but I love the track about my man Ronald and the great Iron Lady!!!

I bought the record today and I really like it. I do find it ironic how a band in support of Occupy Wall Street has a record called "Self Entitlement."
