AFI / The Explosion / Strike Anywherelive in New York City (2003)Universal Music Group Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: Chris (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on February 4th 2003
AFI is really big now. I mean big. Not quite Def Leopard big, but I think you get the idea. I made thre trek from Richmond, VA to NYC for a little vacation, and some great rock from 3 of the most innovative and entertaining acts in the game today. It was a weekend of no sex (shut up), drugs and rock n' roll, so I apologize in advance for a lack of clearer detail. Please login or register to post comments. I think I was at the second show. I think they played two nights and I saw the one with some other band, not Strike Anywhere. Anyways AFI was probably the same, it was ok. nothing great though. Pennywise at irving the year before that was awesome though. careful w/ the word "punk" on here... wow guys u guys r like soo into tv. AFI is alot more songs then Girls not grey jeez u just base a band on one song and mtv. mtv just goes with the flow with all th epop music. Learn bout afi not just a song and how much work they put in. I met Strike Anywhere's singer and guitarist at a hotel me and friends were staying at in Montreal. They had just played there with Good Riddance and Anti Flag, and were staying at the same hotel. They are great guys, and truly know how to rock. You know john bought Hole in the Wall, right? its called "holey chow" now, real clever....they still have bands playing there, Sixer played a few weeks ago there, and i think they have a few more shows slotted. sticky rice is slowly going the way of some of our best places to drink...they are becoming U of R watering holes. Man, I really hate those kids. peeber is $9 at rennies?!?! WHAT!??!?!?! that place is wack ... but nothing beats sticky rice kareoke oh man its scenester heaven! kari, did you know its almost $9 at the rennies by sticky rice? absurd. yeah, i'll send it to you with a receipt saying RVA.... sickboi, can you please go to lombardy market and buy some peeber and think of me? thanks! im homesick for the dirty nasty richmond.and steel reserves are the death of me. that 211 steel, what what. Amen to the beast! bottles are deffintly the way to go for taste, but then cans are nice cause when you fall down you dont hurt yourself as much. never go wrong with a keg. pbr rules, but so does the beast and thats only 9.50 for 24, and since its an ice gets you fucked up quicker I can drink more keg beer, but bottles over cans anyday. They make better weapons too. I agree with the guy who said beer was a better conversation topic. ok to all the elitiest old and new shut the fuck up morons punk was never about the bands you listen to its hte message behind the bands. and also who the fuck siad to be a punk you had to live the punk lifestyle. what the fuck is that i mean hell i live in a house and im probolly more punk that a quarter of the people on this site what the fuck are you all talking about This is seriously the best repsonse body I have ever read on this website!!! oh man imfucking wasted NEWJACK, fire up the A-Team mobile, I'll get the AK. newjackshit is a fuckin flamer. wow i've been on the afi train for awhile. after a few listens, the new cd is growing on me, but unfortuantely for them, i think that the album will fall victim to its on hype (at least in the eyes of their actual fans, not the 14 yr old gothic "ooh i saw this at hot topic so i bought it fans"). afi's new cd is crappy, it's waay slower and all the songs sound like days of the phoenix, but of course everybody'll jump on the afi train and love em till they're another offspring or something. "Oh yeah, I'm going on my 6th year of college bro" "if you were in any way intelligent..you would have realized i was saying you live in the suburbs with your mom who has a plush white carpet and an underpaid immigrant maid that does everything for her and you. you are right. i am not bad off at all. i pay my bills. i am well out of my mothers pussy. i am with sickboi on this one. the gbh record will be up your ass, and you'll have a broken jaw. you are the most punk rock dood alive. college vs. posting on message boards....what are you talking about? how old are you? and if you say an age over 23, your a fucking idiot...and if you say an age under 16, i hope you die." Seems like we got a fight brewing here....Hey did you hear some guy at KF last year paid 20 bucks to punch some other guy in the face? Now that is Punk. And Joe's Crabshack is punk too because it's the only place where you could grab a cold beer in that smoking hot sun of a Kentucky. if you were in any way intelligent..you would have realized i was saying you live in the suburbs with your mom who has a plush white carpet and an underpaid immigrant maid that does everything for her and you. you are right. i am not bad off at all. i pay my bills. i am well out of my mothers pussy. i am with sickboi on this one. the gbh record will be up your ass, and you'll have a broken jaw. you are the most punk rock dood alive. college vs. posting on message boards....what are you talking about? how old are you? and if you say an age over 23, your a fucking idiot...and if you say an age under 16, i hope you die. I logged in just for you, you fucking dolt. I think in the Casualties Early years album they are drinking 40's of Ballentine Ale in the pictures. I've never had it but would love to get my hands on some of that to experiance the horribleness. Oh yeah on the Hurricane 40 label the tag line is "Brace for the Smooth Taste." Hilarious. Yeah, yeah! i also forgot some other 40's: st. ides, country club, and ballantine. ballantine is the worst of all these 40's. it may be the worst beer ever. i have to try Iceman just for shits and giggles though. It just sounds terrible. hopefully it'll make its way over here. I've been commenting on this beer topic the past few days. i've professed my love for the red stripe, pabst, and steel reserve. as for king cobra, laser, midnight dragon, silver thunder, olde E, or colt 45, they are all good 40's. but i'm tellin ya, the steel is something to behold. if ya can find it, make a purchase you'll never forget. and i never got why bud and miller put out malt liquors, but whatever. this is a great topic - cheap beer and 40's. i love good beer, but its just good to drink some awful beer for a cheap price every once in a while The people in NY like to call Huricane or King Cobra "crackhead juice". Head further uptown in Manhattan and you'll see why. Yeah i never understood why Anheiser-Busch made Hurricane and King Cobra since they both cost about $1.19. I think that they sell shit in different states like that just to mix it up. We have ICEMAN and LASER in Cleveland. It costs 99 cents and is made by no big brewing company. absolutely terrible ugh/ Yeah we have it in Richmond, too. A lot of homeless people drink it. The shit tastes like gasoline. $1.05 a 40oz i believe. And its made by Anheiser(sp) Busch. Alright I think my fondest memory of cheep beer is drinking 40's of this shit they have in philly called HURRICANE. This stuff was a staple at the Killtime, goddamn I miss that venue sickboi- yeah we were there. we had a huge white van resembling the A-Team van. strip, fin, anfd all...we just didn't have AK-47's. there were 15 of us. we stayed at a friends house. but you are on for krazyfest this year. I think if RVA had 40oz's of PBR, I wouldn't be able to hold down a job. Newjack....were you at KFest last year? We were at the wild-ass Travelodge, I remember meeting some philly kids. If I see you there this year the first 12 pack of pbr is on me... if you wanna start talkin 40 oz's, the conversation begins and ends with Steel Reserve. that shit is 8.4% malt liquor. I live in NYC and you can get 2 of these 40's for the low low price of 3 bucks. thats right, 1.50 a piece. and its not like i'm in a bad neighborhood or anything, they just have this stuff in most of the places near me. two of these things and you are DONE. its like liquid crack. and it even gives you a different buzz, ya get even more giddy and everything. PBR is a great thing. it has been the unofficial sponsor of 3 - 17 hour van trips from philly to louisville for krazyfest. good times had by all. i mean, AVAIL hangs out when PBR is around. Yeah when I go to the Grog shop I drink the tall boys of PBR they got there occasionally newjackshit. I guess the bottom line is that you get cant get enough of the old Pabst Blue Ribbon around the world i clearly am an internet tough guy. i was clearly stating that too. Evilash, what about good ol' bottles or even 40's of PBR? A cleveland favorite amongst my friends. Often rocked around the coventry road area. On the subject of BEER and cheep beer at that I think its neccesary to bring up the old Milwaukee's Best 16oz. can sick pack that we clevelanders (or at least my friends) enjoy frequently. WHAT ABOUT A 40oz OF KING COBRA TO WASH THAT 6er DOWN? man you guys(or gals). I'm soo going to see AFI at some point, and once they play that techno breakdown from "Death Of Seasons" i'm whipping out the neon glowsticks and beginning to gyrate. Did you guys see the monday comic from nothingnice.com? Mitch caps on Davey, it's funny. i think it's kind of cool that people actually give a nod to joy division on this site, props to you guys. An ugly girl. He used to look like a guy...bakc when he used to be obsessed with Danzig and his devilock.....now he looks like a gothic sigourney weaver...eeeekkk! Oh well, the new cd is ok...nothing I'd buy, but not terrible. Well, some of it is, but a few songs are good. Shit .. I just saw this picture of AFI taken a week ago... Is it just me, or does Davey's screaming sound similar to As Friend's Rust and Avail on the Sing The Sorrow album? Its most noticable on Dancing Through Sunday and Death of Seasons.. check it out, maybe im just going crazy... This score is for PBR and the other cheap southern beer staple, nattie ice. Hmmm.. Lotsa arguing... Well I like both oldschool and new school punk myself, and I don't know if they should even really be compared, as they don't really sound alike at all... Basically punk rock is just one big arguement, and it's never gonna stop. It's impossible to please everyone, so why bother even trying? "how many steps back are we going, is punk that good? we have to name Joy division as better than 3/4's of the stuff out there?, Oh, and I don't like the Casualties or the Pistols. The Clash rules the schools. It sucked, I was there and it sucked. MAn this band has changed, what happened to the good old days when they were punk instead of this new pop punk with a gothic twist shit. This band has really gone down hill and despite what this reviewer has to say the crowd was bland and calm. For an NYC show this was beyond boring. So defending one's opinions make that person a "computer toughguy"? Thats ignorant. Now if I said, "I'll kick your ass for talking shit", your arguement would be supported. In conclusion, I'm through with you. Next complaint please. "Its the "punker than thou asswipes", like you, that turn kids away from great music and towards the TRL dribble." "since when is arguing against elitism tough talk?" I love guys like New Jack, toughest mother fuckers on the planet as long as there is a computer screen seperating him & the person he's calling names. Now go do your homework before mom & dad take away your internet. Then you won't be able to talk tough to anyone. I can name great music from now (Good Riddance, Strike Anywhere, Rise Against, etc.) and great music from "then" (Black Flag, Public Enemy, Minor Threat, RATM). I don't see why people bar on other people for liking music from a certain time. I mean, in the song requests thing for Scotts show last nite I got criticized by some moron that I was "Mr. old skool punker" just because I suggested The Clash, DK and Body Count. well aren't you just snooty. hold that pinky up a little higher bitch. The best cheap beer is Natural Ice. Yea sure it tastes like shit, but for $15.00 a 30 pack, everyone's a winner. please never post anything on the internet again. you wasted 2 minutes of all of our lives with that drivle. you are not more knowledgeable. you are equally if not more jaded than everyone else. your little list of songs is just silly. you could have easily just put one of those songs down. they all sound the same..with the exception of the stooges. what is your little ad about helping the bands by buying the records? you do realize that the bands probably are not recieveing royalties for those records anymore..that is to say they ever actually did. get off the computer. total tool. I don't like to point out shit, as I have my fair share of mistakes, but AFI are "east bay", not "east coast". Secondly, I've been listening to both old and new shit for some time now. Its the "punker than thou asswipes", like you, that turn kids away from great music and towards the TRL dribble. If the kids try to listen to what you deem "real punk", you call them posers and insist they aren't from "back in the day". Go back to the hole you came from, ass. "i have just seen it sometimes that someone who liked another band, then another one said something bout it and said that "this and this" is better coz its oldskool" Id like to do it otherwise, it wasnt like that i ment it, sorry :) i have just seen it sometimes that someone who liked another band, then another one said something bout it and said that "this and this" is better coz its oldskool Hmmm... I wish i lived in America (only a very few times though, else i think it would be crap living there anyway), sounded like a man said "aint that a kick in the head" But is it me or does old school punk fans think they are superroir to us "new fans" or is it just me? i have only listen to punk for the last what, 3,4 5 years (17 now) and somehow when we like music thats new and sound like older punk we are some sort of idiots? (i dont specefic like AFI anyway) You forgot Josef Houghbauer (sp?)... i wrote before about the pabst and the red stripe. as for pabst, its not that bad. and i've drank a ton of different beer, whether they are from other countries or just microbrews from here. now i'm not going to say pabst can hold a candle to any of these good beers. that would just be insane and insulting to the good beers. but one the other hand, if you are goin cheap on a twelve pack, pabst is not a bad choice. its definitely better than schlitz, schmidts, piels, strohs, milwaukee's best, and old milwaukee. man, that lineup is like murder's row. if i forgot any, please let me know. anyway, i also think it gets the nod over Miller Low Life (one of the worst beers ever - and the commercials are just disgusting - i mean, who eats a tunafish sandwich while drinking a beer, ugh). It might get a nod over Busch too. so its not like you want to go and search this beer out. its just a a decent cheap beer and those are hard to find actually. and as i said, if i'm going to be at the knitting factory, there is no way i'm drinking a can of that for 4 bucks when i can get a nice fat bottle of red stripe for 5. now i need to go get a drink all bands in the entire world suck. so there. i bet the kid being lame is light years better then AFI. really. if i had a label, i'd sign him and dress him up like a fat 14 year old girl with spike bracelets and dyed black hair. he could make millions. Hey if you are looking for sing the sorrow on Kazaa you are just gonna end up downloading an entire list of shitty rap songs disguised as the new album. Some kid thought it would be sweet to record himself being lame on a four track and upload it as the enire new album. You have been warned i can't stand the icarus line. and travis wishes his balls were on my chin. I attended the AFI/Explosion Show on January 31st at Irving Plaza and it was the most disappointed I've ever been at at Irving. The crowd was a bunch of pussy TRL loving little kids that were more worried about the band name on their shirts than the music. Not many people in the crowd even knew the Explosion (one of the best punk sounds around now) and the pit was full of these pussy AFI kids who were totally mocking the explosion. FUCK FUCK FUCK. The other half of the crowd was label executives and A&R people watching in awe. anyway, AFI put on a decent set; its a shame its come to this point. There you have it folks, my best comment of the day award goes to the insightful lad below.... you're all a bunch of faggots. strike anywhere? afi? explosion? listen to some real, honest, creative punk bands like pennywise, anti-flag,guttermouth and the casualties. PBR? A good beer?!?!?! WHAT THE FUCK!!! Whats next, Smirnoff is good vodka, Wild Turkey is good whiskey? Christ, spend a couple extra bucks & get some real beer. i dont think PBR is the official punk rock beer because well, you cant get it everywhere! its damn impossible to find me my peeber on long island! The Icarus Line rules, brah! Dude, I think Travis' balls are on your chin. how many steps back are we going, is punk that good? we have to name Joy division as better than 3/4's of the stuff out there?, THe secret song on AOD rocked big time...it's called Battled right? Anyway, yeah and a couple other songs on it did too. But what was with Morningstar? I mean, I love melody and atmospheric music, but that song sounded like it was being sang to a child in his bedtime story....it sounded cartoonish and corny. This new album is ok, some songs rock...but have awkward moments (like the electric techno thing in the middle of "death Of Seasons"). Davey's singing is almost too sqeaky, but his screams are well done and the end of death of seasons is really cool. The beest song on the record is probably "Dancing Through Sunday"...it's hard, fast and has plenty of "woahs" it sounds like it was taken straigt from "Shut Your Mouth...". I heard they put on a good live show though. For the record, except for the secret song the Art of Drowning sucked. I myself have been wrestling with that statement for a while...considering I have an AFI tattoo. The peak was Shut Your Mouth, Black Sails was good...but I think I could feel "sing the sorrow" coming. Sort of like having to take a huge dump but trying to hold it because there is no place to go. AFI rocks.. and if you know anything about music, you can hear that they are getting better... A lot more creative than the repetitive punk sounds of their first albums. So they`re not punk anymore... well amen to that. You cant write the same album all the time like, lets say pennywise. Personaly, I think the new album is on par with Art of Drowning and Black Sails. Who cares if they sound like misfits, which I dont think they do, or anybody else for that matter. Music is good or bad, and that`s a matter of opinion. can somebody tell the nerd who is crying about me ripping buddyhead off to shut the fuck up. clearly i am blatantly ripping them off...or i just really don't like AFI and hot topic and fat 14 year old girls...and him. he is a crybaby. I'm guessing alot of kids will be soon spouting out on how much they hate the new AFI album ("it's so major label", "This is just shit to attract lots of fans and to get BIG") but im proud to say, even as a long time AFI fan, hater of all things pop punk and a tough guy straight edge kid that I enjoy the new AFI album. When i first heard Girl's not grey and this celluliod dream i thought they sounded ULTRA GAY but when put in the context of their album as a whole, they grow on you. The album contains better songs though. my friend got it off of his network at school. i would imagine pretty soon it will run rampant on kazaa. ok...how have you guys heard the new AFI album?? is there a place to download the whole thing or something? "Joy Division is better than all of those bands!" Oh, Soybomb, I don't know what new songs they played beside this. As stated, I was pretty trashed, and haven't heard the album yet, but I do think they played another 1 or 2 new songs. OK cock-smuggler, lets get something straight. I never claimed to be a huge AFI fan. I went primarily for the Explosion and Strike Anywhere. 2 fucking errors. Secondly, write your own review. This one sucks, I know. I only wrote it because I knew there were some people curious about the show. I thought the crowd was fine. Maybe because of fucktards like yourself, shows can get a shitty vibe. You're a prick. Probably a fucking scenester too. Thats it, you're not worth anymore ranting. as funny and unexpected the techno bridge is, the song is actually good. This review sucked. First you apparently renamed 2 AFI songs...theyre called "Girl's Not Grey" and "Strength Through Wounding". Thanks fan of the year. Did they play "Death Of Seasons" from "Sing The Sorrow"? That song has a really HILLARIOUS techno bridge that reminds me very much of the rhythm from the theme song for Mortal Kombat. Girls not grey is really bad. You know it really sucks that AFI had to come to this because "Shut Your Mouth" was a great HARDCORE CD drawling no direct influences from the misfits new or old. So fuck this misfits talk, sure davey adhears to a certain image nowadays but that has no direct affect in the decline of AFI's artistic integrity. Its just stupid that alot of people who under normal circumstances have liked this band (myself included) at some point in there career will fucking talk shit because of the Hot topic frenzied crowd they have developed. It is safe to say that the true fans were those who dug the band before all that shit, and the kids who wear the shit now because it's cool are seriously confused about thier own tastes. Why is it so important to pay mind to these suck kids?? Its not there fault that AFI is on a decline, hte band made the decision to record some shitty songs and call it SING THE SORROW, not the fans, new or old. "AFI is easily the best band i have ever seen..." I'd say Marilyn Manson, Korn and the Newfits are the reasons Hot Topic exists. Does someone want to tell this NEWJACKSHIT kid that he is not on the staff of buddyhead? Christ, I can show you at least 3 posts where he blatantly rips off their shit. afi is god awful. davey havok is the reason hot topic exists and fat 14 year old girls go to shows. my friend just im'ed me the new album, and i am not quite sure what to think of it. its not bad, by any means, but its not the afi that i have come to grow and love. then again, for a band that arguably reached perfection on either black sails or the art of drowning, they probably have the highest standards set for any album to come out this year that i can think of. no doubt in my mind that sing the sorrow will grow on me. well there is my little review that no one asked for. The ONLY similarities between AFI and the 'Fits are the occasional "Woahs", Davey's obsession with Glenn and heir "goth" look...nothing more. The lyrics, sound and message is MUCH different. Good review. AFI doesn't sound remotely close to The Misfits either musically or lyrically, stop trying to sound cool. AFI and Strike Anywhere playing together must have been amazing. Now we just need a AFI/Strung Out tour! wasn't at the show. afi is alright. as for the pabst: thats good stuff, but i'm a big fan of the red stripe when i'm at the knitting factory. that is a cool venue, but i think i like irving plaza a bit more. You're right. I'm a mean person and hate happy people. I don't have a problem with homosexuals, however. it aint just richmond. it is everywhere. sickboi hates gays. Yeah, PBR is lifeblood in Richmond. $5.00 for a can of bud at Irving Plaza. Damn of that. But your store do have 6 packs of the 16ozers. Bomb. sounds like a hell of a show. woulda liked to be there. Is it just me, or has PBR become the official beer of "punk" in the past two-three years? AFI fucking sucks. listen to the misfits. or danzig, really. it's all about strike anywhere with kid dynamite at the church in philly. suckers. the explosion get me moving. grrrrrr on you grrrrr, because now that im living up here in NY, i coudlnt go see strike anywhere because people like you roadtrippers got all the tickets!!!! haha glad you had a good time though To those of you people who were at the show: SCREW YOU GUYS FOR BUYING ALL THE TICKETS!!! Eh, I knew the song was something about a girl and grey. There were too many kids there being "that guy". Don't be that guy. Yeah.......Strike Anywhere rock. AFI is alright, the song is Girl's not grey......., the new album is ok. Some of it is good and some of it is lame alt-rock. It's a shame that so many fashion kiddies are into it now...oh well. godamnit! I really wanted to got to that show. Sounded like a hoot. Oh well, I'll see Strike Anywhere in March at Tribeca. god i hate afi Sounds like a great show. I hate a large portion of AFI's new fans as well (I got into an altercation with one at Krazy Fest), but they're still great live, so I can bring myself to deal with said fans. Great opening bands too. Is AFI, ZZ Top big? | Features
