Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

AFI is really big now. I mean big. Not quite Def Leopard big, but I think you get the idea. I made thre trek from Richmond, VA to NYC for a little vacation, and some great rock from 3 of the most innovative and entertaining acts in the game today. It was a weekend of no sex (shut up), drugs and rock n' roll, so I apologize in advance for a lack of clearer detail.

First things first, Irving Plaza is a great venue. Security was actually quite polite, and the kids at the show showed a great deal of respect for one another. And ladies, I'm still salivating over how good you all looked.

For those of you not from NYC, and that have never been to Irving Plaza, the best way to describe it would be a fine mix between the size of DC's Nations (formerly Capital Ballroom) with the style of the (new) 9:30 club.

Now, back to my original point. AFI, you know, really big now? Yeah, at least 1 out of every 5 kids there was either wearing an AFI shirt (an older one, not purchased that evening), or something to mimic the style of one Davey Havok.

So I arrived in plenty of time, being that one my favorites, our own local favorites, Strike Anywhere, would be tearing shit up first. And let me tell you, thats exactly what they did. Immediately, I could feel my goosebumps building as the thunderous drumline from "You're Fired" began, andfThomas jumped into the powerful vocals. To my suprise and delight, the crowd was in a fury, pumping fists and singing along to every word. It had been a very long time since I had seen Strike Anywhere be anything but the headliner, so after a short set of only about 7 songs, I was a tad disappointed to see their segment of the show come to a close.

But never fear. Boston's own the Explosion was next, and came with would be the most energetic performance of the night. The set was comprised mostly of tracks from the incredible 'Flash, Flash, Flash' lp, and I can honestly say that no one at this point felt the the two openers were not worthy to be on the bill.

As AFI began to take the stage, the crowed went onto and monsterous chant of "Strength From Wounding", as the the members began to take the stage. And finally, AFI came, sending the crowd into mayhem, Tracks from the set included both older favorites such as "A Single Second" (my personal favorite), newer material such as "Days of the Phoneix", and even the newest single "Girl Turns Grey". Suprisingly, "Girl Turns Grey" sounded much better and energetic in the live show, as opposed to the recorded version. I think I may like the song now.

As AFI ended their set, their was silence and darkness coming from the stage, which of course could only mean one thing, the pre-planned encore. Oh how I hate this. But, I guess its part of the game.

Anyways, they came back out, I remember hearing "God Called in Sick Today" and the show ended.

My expectations were very high for this show, and naturally the Explosion and Strike Anywhere delivered on key. I won't say that AFI let me down, but I kept feeling the strong sensation of change. Hopefully, this change will eventually evolve to become part of my normal view of AFI, but as of now I am unsure on how I feel about the metamorphasis of one of the East Bay's greatest acts.

I think I was at the second show. I think they played two nights and I saw the one with some other band, not Strike Anywhere. Anyways AFI was probably the same, it was ok. nothing great though. Pennywise at irving the year before that was awesome though.

    My Score:

careful w/ the word "punk" on here...
if you use the incorrect definition, you'll get your balls ripped off while being raped up the ass by the so-called geniuses who know everything there is to know about punk. and also, how can someone be "punk rock"? honestly? is that possible? "punk rock" is a genre of music. you can't exactly "be" a genre. so in a short summary:

    1) calling yourself "punk" is NOT good. obviously you "punks" do not own a dictionary or have any sense at all. a "punk" is a guy who sucks dick for cigarettes in prison. not too cool of a label if you ask me...

    2) "punk rock" is a genre ladies and gentleman. so unless you're available for listening on a cd, record, castette, or w/e you prefer, you will NEVER be "punk rock"...

and 3) listen to your music and enjoy yourselves!! quit jumping on this "i'm-so-punk-rawk" band wagon and just be yourself and stop belittling everyone else b/c their views on the music and "attitude" aren't the same as yours. if you wanna have a punk attitude, then just chill out and be respectful to others and act just how you'd want them to act towards you. making fun of people b/c they don't have a straight-forward degrading opinion like you isn't being a punk. you're just being an asshole...

and on a side note, in the matter of AFI's "Sing The Sorrow" and Davey's new "look". STS kicks ass. whoever said that it is crappy officially has the worst taste on the face of this planet. and as far as Davey goes, he looks different and i suppose he's not "punk" enough for all to enjoy so you feel the need to criticize. rating Davey's fashion isn't very "punk rawk" you know? that's just plain homosexual...

Joy Division was an amazing band- a band that put deep thought in both its lyrics and its music. And get over synths... They were using them before the huge 80s synth boom... At that time it sounded futuristic. And "artsy"? What the fuck are you on? Just because they don't play their guitars a mile a minute they aren't "punk"? Hate to break it to you, but Joy Division was a punk band called "Warsaw" before they got they got recorded. They only changed their name because another band, called "Warsaw Pakt" was around at that time. And their two albums are basic punk riffs with heavy bass, and distorted guitars. Great stuff. Sickboi... I personally hate half the bands on that guys list, but at least I LISTENED to them... "Besides the Stooges, they all sound the same"... Joy Division, the Clash, and Eater all sound the same to you??? Of course, you hate the Sex Pistols but like the Casualties... that kinda explains your reasoning. You are uneducated. Have you even HEARD of Eater or Richard Hell? You aren't arguing against "elitism", you're arguing against education. Yes, read "Please Kill Me" but dont read "Rotten".

Namedropping a band like the Stooges doesn't impress anybody. I could argue that you're being an "elitist" for forcing your opinions on the "old school" fan. Computer tough guys do not impress people, SickBoi and NewJackShit...

    And, yes...

"i have just seen it sometimes that someone who liked another band, then another one said something bout it and said that "this and this" is better coz its oldskool"

Firstly, please learn to write correct English. Secondly, I am an "old school" (even though many could argue what old school is, my opinion being anything up to 1981) fan. I don't think I'm superior to you "new fans" but I do think I'm a hell of alot more knowledgeable than you guys... I mean, read "Please Kill Me" and "Rotten" before you decide that you like punk music. And no, AFI is not punk. "East Coast Hardcore" can stay on the East Coast. As far as I can see, its heavy metal with the band dressed up like punk goths... I've met alot of you "new fans" who could write the book about AFI, NFG, or any of those new fucking bands that suck, but not know one Clash, Joy Division, or Eater song. Its fucking sick, too, because all I see is these trendy KoRn fans converting to "punk" just to be in the newest, coolest "alternative" scene. And some kids think they're the punkiest punk punks ever because they liked NoFx before Blink or NFG got popular... Its sad... But here's a list of songs you "young fans" should DL. And yes I'm dictating this:

"Thinking of the USA" by Eater
    "Marquee Moon" by Television
    "Disorder" by Joy Division
    "Tommy Gun" by the Clash
"New Rose" by the Damned (live version is preferable)
"No Fun" by the Sex Pistols
"One Track Mind" by Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers
"Blank Generation" by Richard Hell and the Voidoids
"Search and Destroy" by Iggy and the Stooges
"In the City" by the Jam
"If the Kids are United" by Sham 69

There are so many more, but I don't care anymore about listing them. Just do it. THEN BUY THE CDs SO YOU ARENT STEALING FROM THE ARTIST.

It might get a nod over Busch too. so its not like you want to go and search this beer out. its just a a decent cheap beer and those are hard to find actually. and as i said, if i'm going to be at the knitting factory, there is no way i'm drinking a can of that for 4 bucks when i can get a nice fat bottle of red stripe for 5. now i need to go get a drink

The crowd was a bunch of pussy TRL loving little kids that were more worried about the band name on their shirts than the music. Not many people in the crowd even knew the Explosion (one of the best punk sounds around now) and the pit was full of these pussy AFI kids who were totally mocking the explosion. FUCK FUCK FUCK. The other half of the crowd was label executives and A&R people watching in awe. anyway, AFI put on a decent set; its a shame its come to this point.

THe secret song on AOD rocked big time...it's called Battled right? Anyway, yeah and a couple other songs on it did too. But what was with Morningstar? I mean, I love melody and atmospheric music, but that song sounded like it was being sang to a child in his bedtime story....it sounded cartoonish and corny. This new album is ok, some songs rock...but have awkward moments (like the electric techno thing in the middle of "death Of Seasons"). Davey's singing is almost too sqeaky, but his screams are well done and the end of death of seasons is really cool. The beest song on the record is probably "Dancing Through Sunday"...it's hard, fast and has plenty of "woahs" it sounds like it was taken straigt from "Shut Your Mouth...". I heard they put on a good live show though.

So they`re not punk anymore... well amen to that. You cant write the same album all the time like, lets say pennywise. Personaly, I think the new album is on par with Art of Drowning and Black Sails. Who cares if they sound like misfits, which I dont think they do, or anybody else for that matter. Music is good or bad, and that`s a matter of opinion.

So fuck this misfits talk, sure davey adhears to a certain image nowadays but that has no direct affect in the decline of AFI's artistic integrity. Its just stupid that alot of people who under normal circumstances have liked this band (myself included) at some point in there career will fucking talk shit because of the Hot topic frenzied crowd they have developed. It is safe to say that the true fans were those who dug the band before all that shit, and the kids who wear the shit now because it's cool are seriously confused about thier own tastes. Why is it so important to pay mind to these suck kids?? Its not there fault that AFI is on a decline, hte band made the decision to record some shitty songs and call it SING THE SORROW, not the fans, new or old.
