There are several terms that get thrown around in music description that bother me. These are usually words that have no hard and fast meaning. Phrases like "earthy" and "organic" come to mind. Perhaps the top of this list of peeves is the term "urgent." Music that is described as "urgent" doesn't have a set list of qualifications. It can be fast or slow. Loud or quiet. Popular or not. A band can be playing 1,000 bpm but it doesn't mean it's going to sound "urgent." The term "urgent" in music has become like the popular definition of pornography, meaning you know it when you see/hear it. So, it is no small exaggeration to say it pains me that "urgent" is the best way I can describe Mouthbreather's Kiss of Death debut full-length, Thank You for Your Patience.

I def miss The Setup more than Wow Owls!, but I still loved both bands, and will buy this release, but I don't like the vocals as much as the two previous bands. Score is for what I heard. Goddamn I miss WoW, Owls! This is a band worth checking out. Awesome stuff, Avail fans will get into this. I can't say I love it, but it is still a great record. I can't comment on this because I haven't heard it, but I gotta give props to the label for having released the Guiltmaker EP, who more people on this site should be championing. They should hopefully have a full-length out this year, which I have already heard and can vouch for its awesomeness. Give 'em a chance. bought the demo (still in one of the best packaging jobs i've seen on any cd), and was floored. it immediately reminded me of Hot Snakes, Murder City Devils, just that really great, dark, rock'n'roll-tinged punk. now, if only they'd tour more extensively... "urgent" is one of those words that just set me on edge. I dont know exactly what that's called...when a word evokes a bodily response, but as I was reading this review the number of times I read urgent made me feel like I had tonnes of shit to do and fucking stressed like I needed a panic room or something. Other then that, I liked the review. Maybe i'll check the band out after I purchase a panic room I can run into after I listen to their album. Great review -- long as fuck -- but great anyway. I'll check it out. I just noticed this said 12". It's also a CD, which is what I reviewed, since I can only listen to records at home, CD's are always on at work and shit. |
