Though the band has had a lengthy and successful relationship with Sub Pop Records, the Shins are apparently looking to go solo for their next album. According to a Billboard interview, the band is set toself-release their fourth studio album through frontman James Mercer's Aural Apothecary label.

The band is planning to continue the trend of popular bands testing new waters by partnering with a label for pressing and distribution but retaining ownership and control of their own recordings. While they have not ruled out Sub Pop, the band has not committed to the venerable indie either.

The band released Wincing the Night Away in 2007.
