Four founders of Pirate Bay found guilty of promoting copyright infringement

Many of you wrote in with the news that the founders of popular BitTorrent file sharing site, The Pirate Bay, have been found guilty of promoting copyright infringement in Sweden.

The four founders were sentenced to one year in prison apiece and must pay a fine of 30 million SEK ( €2.7 million or $3.5 million.) The four are planning to appeal the verdict which has already led to thousands demonstrating.

Much of the controversy around the site stemmed from the fact that the Pirate Bay did not provide infringing content, but indexed the content from around the world. The impact of the decision could have high reaching decisions for BitTorrent sites, but also for indexes of content like Google.
