Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: how do you guys come up with the punknews best of the year list? is it complicated like the BCS or is it a simple process? Are Aubin's votes 6x greater than everyone else?

A: Basically, in November we contact all the record labels and managers we deal with and let them know we're compiling the list and they can send in any late entries if they want. Then in late November we compile a list of all the promo materials and albums we reviewed and contact the labels and managers again. This time we inform them that the "voting" has begun and each band can get one "vote" per dollar and the band with the most "votes" wins. Inversely, the band that pays for the least "votes" never gets covered again. We take the money, put it in a bank account discreetly labeled, "Punknews Hovercraft/office operating costs" and print the list.
Easy.

Actually, all the editorial staff and a writers get together and submit a top 20. Each individual's vote carries the same weight. For example #1 is worth 20 points, #2 is worth 19 and so on. All the points are added up and the top 20 point earners make the list.

But I mean, Adam does all the math, so who knows what really happens.
