Here's your question and answer of the week from the Punknews Formspring:

Q: Was Elton John the first goth?

A: As much as I love Sir Elton, I don't think the term would apply. In my understanding (which is insanely limited) Joy Division is largely considered the first "goth" band. I have no idea what that means, other than they made people really sad.

Elton John, while he did have sad songs, mostly made people feel rad as fuck with his music. I mean, he wore awesome glasses and had a Donald Duck costume. Beyond that, I picture goths as being moody and introverted. While John is clearly moody, ever since he first used cocaine he's been anything but introverted (which is part of the thing I love about him. I mean he calls out Madona for lip syncing. Which isn't amazingly brave, but it's so super bitchy that I can't help but love it.).

So, I wouldn't imagine but I don't really study goth culture. So maybe.
