As detailed by Rolling Stone, the Music Industry Research Association (MIRA) has released findings focusing on the demographics of musicians. In a study of 1,227 established and newly starting out musicians, MIRA determed that the average musician makes about $35,000 per year from all income streams, but less than $22,000 from music revenue. Not surprisingly, the majority of those funds were from live shows.

Women were determined to make up 34.2 percent of U.S. musicians in 2016. In 2010, that figure was 35.1 percent and in 1990 it was 32.9 percent. Further, 72 percent of female musicians reported having faced gender discrimination. 67 percent reported having experienced sexual harassment. These rates are higher than the overall figures reported by women in the U.S.: 28 percent for gender discrimination and 42 percent for harassment. Read the full report here.
