As a part of our ongoing coverage for 77' Montreal. Today, we have 3 mini-interviews from three bands that are apart of this year's celebration of punk. See below to read a mini-interview from Mute, The Anti-Queens and The Avengers.
77' Montreal will happen on July 26th, 2019 at Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec. For full details on the festival, you can click here.
This is a festival that celebrates 40 years of punk rock, and Mute has been makin' punk rock and playin' shows for over 20 of those years! The only reason we couldn't have been doing this sooner is the scene got a head start!
2. '77 Montreal hopes to create a living archive of the Montreal Punk Scene, How do you think your band has contributed to achieving this?
I'm still the new guy in the band, but Mute has always been about building local scenes, not only in Quebec, but across Canada, and all around the world. And even though Mute isn't from the city of Montreal, we've played a large part in putting Canadian skatepunk on the world's radar, and ensuring that Quebec gets referred to, so lovingly, as "La ville du punk rock"!
3. Who are you looking forward to seeing while at the festival and why?
I can't wait to watch Bigwig! It's been a very long time since I've seen them last. From what I hear, they spend a lot of time in Quebec, and so do I, but somehow I'm never there at the same time! Bad Religion too, of course, Pennywise, and a bunch of other bands! It's gonna be a great fest.
4. Anything coming up for your band that you are interested in sharing? Tours? New Releases?
I'm actually doing this interview from Europe, we just started a month-long tour here, and presently we're stuck in a long van ride from Belgium to Italy. Later this year we're going to Mexico as well, so that should be awesome. As for releases… no news yet, unfortunately! But follow us on social media to get news as it drops!
5. Any final thoughts or comments?
Yes, thanks for the interview! I am out of movies to watch in the tour van, and the new season of Stranger Things isn't out for another week or two, so I had a lot of fun doing this interview. And thanks for being a cool website, Punknews!
We are axe-swingin, free thinking women who love to rock out on stages of all sizes. We all grew up listening to some form of punk rock and we’re confident we’re gonna feel right at home during ‘77.
2. '77 Montreal hopes to create a living archive of the Montreal Punk Scene, How do you think your band has contributed to achieving this?
We have recently signed to Stomp Records, a punk and ska label based out of Montreal. As well we have been playing some great festivals and shows in Montreal and Quebec over the last couple years now. And poutine is life.
3. Who are you looking forward to seeing while at the festival and why?
Bad Religion, for obvious reasons. And we heard The Dirty Nil are ok.
4. Anything coming up for your band that you are interested in sharing? Tours? New Releases?
So many exciting things! New album in September, a few more fests this summer (Elora Riverfest, La Deluge), we get to open for The Adicts in August at the Mod Club (Toronto), a small run in September with The Dreadnoughts through Quebec, and much more that we arent allowed to speak about yet ;)

Penelope of Houston of Avengers 1. You guy/gals are playing '77 Montreal this year. How do you think your band fits into the ethos of the festival?
I'm pretty sure we are the only band in the line-up that is from 1977 so I'd say we ARE the ethos of the fest.
2. '77 Montreal hopes to create a living archive of the Montreal Punk Scene, How do you think your band has contributed to achieving this?
We only played Montreal once before so can't count ourselves as part of the scene, per se, but hopefully influenced some punks there.
3. Who are you looking forward to seeing while at the festival and why?
I always enjoy seeing women in punk bands so I'll try to check out Red Mass, Charly Bliss, Anti-Queens and for fun Young Party
4. Anything coming up for your band that you are interested in sharing? Tours? New Releases?
A couple of shows in Italy are coming right up, plus Rebellion Fest and some UK dates… but the big news is a full US tour with Stiff Little Fingers in Oct/Nov. All shows listed here 5. Any final thoughts or comments?
