Complaints*

*Secrets [7-inch] (2010)

Meaty Beaty

The asterisk-loving Complaints* had a prior 7", *Wanna Be Bored, which could best be described as likening to those early '80s hardcore bands that had a penchant for rock'n'roll and '77 punk. *Secrets leans a little more toward the early punk tilt, and does it well.

I half-expect to chant a certain mantra by the Germs when the title track kicks it off, but the band is going more on that turn-of-the'-80s, riffy punk bend. Guitars wail away in quick bursts during "Bail Me Out" (fans of the Briefs take note), while "Sound of Truth" feels a little more fleshed-out and thoughtful, even though it's the longest track here by only eight seconds.

By the by, Complaints* contain current/ex-members of Swingin' Utters, Western Addiction and a handful of others if that piques your interest. The music alone does it just enough for me.
