The Run Up

Scared of Everything (2015)

Paper+Plastick

The Run Up’s vocals are gritty. That’s the first thing you’ll notice about the band upon listening to them. You might also hear the sweet reminiscence of melodic punk bands like The Bouncing Souls and Iron Chic. The band’s new EP, Scared Of Everything, is full of singalong punk songs with melody and complexity. With the recent tragedy in Paris, the band is offering the EP for a pay what you want with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the humanitarian crisis in Northern France.

The EP is definitely a roller coaster of melodic punk. While most of the songs follow the same format. It’s the guitars on songs like “Feels Like Yesterday” and “Knocks and Tears” that create a distinction for the band. The EP has some softer moments as well. Like on “Lately” where the song reflects on the past and how it effects the present. The lyrical content on is pretty straightforward and makes the EP easy to sing along to. While the EP can sound a little repetitive at times, it’s short enough to keep its momentum throughout. “Deservers” ends the EP on a heavy note and provides the album with an overall clarity of the band’s sound.

Overall, The Run Up’s sound holds up among the melodic punk scene. The songs all have their own themes and vibes yet can sound very similar for most of the EP. The band has definitely developed their sound into what can only be described as beer soaked punk. Fans will rejoice over the gritty vocals and the influences the band takes from bands like The Bouncing Souls and The Menzingers. This is definitely a band to check out for melodic punk fans.
