The Furies

Omens (2015)

Self Released

The Furies’ EP, Omens, draws from an eclectic range of influences to create a pop-rock sound that still sounds distinctly rock, in addition to being distinctly 90’s. That's hardly a surprise from a band whose lead singer once served as the touring keyboardist for Third Eye Blind. The sound calls to mind a lot of 90’s artists, including my all time favorite fuck-you-I-don't-feel-guilty-about-it-and-won't-apologize pleasure band, The Barenaked Ladies. This all girl quintet that is based in Providence, Boston, and New York simultaneously puts together a delicate and beautiful sound full of twinkling guitars and a string section, all complimented by frontwoman Lee Moretti’s voice, which sounds strong and crisp and displays great range.

Lyrically, the EP focuses on classic themes of heartbreak and introspection. My personal favorite track is “Enemies Now,” mostly because it describes my current situation with my ex perfectly. The lyrics are both poetic and universal, making it a particularly good album to listen to when you're recovering from a breakup. The Furies are now working on their first full-length and, if the promise they’ve shown on Omens is any indication, it's likely to be an excellent record from a band with a very bright future ahead of them.
