The Dan Band

Live in Hermosa Beach (2016)

live show

Yeah, okay fine -- this band doesn’t exactly “up the punx,” but when I saw The Dan Band on December 2, 2016 at Sainte Rock in Hermosa Beach, California I couldn’t help but at least write about the show because of how hysterically funny it was.

Chances are you have seen this band on “the big screen” in films such as Old School, Starsky And Hutch, and the first Hangover movie. And I have to say that his performance is just as funny, if not more so in person than in the movies. Each song performed was a popular cover where Dan (wearing a blue worker’s outfit) inserted an extra and inappropriately placed “fuck” or “shit” (or some other swear word) in all the right places. The set list included Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart,” 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop,” Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful” and “Genie In A Bottle,” The Black Eyed Peas “My Humps” and many other radio pop hits that I have loathed since they originally were released. It wasn’t only the added swear words that made the show so funny though. The choreography between Dan and his back up singers/dancers, who wore matching business suits and thick-rimmed glasses, came off of so hilariously sarcastic and ridiculous. Dan’s ability to improvise lyrics while working the crowd and cracking jokes was just as impressive and funny as the songs performed on the set list as well.

I’m not kidding, by mid-way through The Dan Band’s performance I was in tears. It was that funny. You absolutely won't find the original recording of these songs anywhere on my iTunes library, but I will absolutely love to see The Dan Band perform them any time. Even if you take away the jokes, the performance itself was great – that goes for the vocals, the dancing and the guitar and drums. The Dan Band is an excellent and hysterical middle finger to the self-indulgent pop stars who take themselves and their music way too seriously. If they happen to be playing a show in your area, definitely go out and see them.
