Little Lungs

Living Hell [7-inch] (2010)

Salinas

Little Lungs' newest 7" is another enjoyable, energized slab of charged tunes. For those already not converted, Little Lungs do a style of scrappy but dynamic, female-fronted indie-punk not far off the likes of Lemuria, with enough Superchunk and Archers of Loaf influence to insure a raw-pop, melodic current keeping attention consistently. Living Hell is their sophomore 7", serving up a fine followup to the band's 2008 demo, Hoist Me Up!.

If I remember the band's last release correctly, Living Hell seems a little faster and more frenetic and punky, but still with plenty of able stop-starts and momentum game-changers. This is evident when frontwoman Angie kicks off opener "Estranged" with earnestly off-key vocals immediately ushering in the track. She might never be completely in tune, but never once is it grating and she gets away with that sincerity at every turn. She starts off Side B the same way with "Things Fall Apart," but the song stakes out a slower methodology, painting sweet lines above distorted guitars not quite unlike, say, Dinosaur Jr.

Get on the train now while it's not too far down the track.
